Respect state assembly no-go on forests, NGO reminds exco |

PETALING JAYA: An environmental group has urged the Selangor government to respect the state assembly’s decision to not delist the Kuala Langat North forest reserve, after a state official said degazetting the forest was still on the cards.
Selangor executive councillor Hee Loy Sian had said yesterday that the delisting of the forest is still on the cards. The forest is occupied by rich wildlife species and is the home of Orang Asli.
Hee said an investigation and discussions with academics and experts were being carried out about degazettement of the forest.
Sahabat Alam Malaysia president Meenakshi Raman said “degazettement or not” should have been moot, as the Selangor legislature had passed a motion not to touch any forest reserves.

‘Protectionist’ cabotage policy bad for nation’s image, says economist |

PETALING JAYA: An economist says the removal of a cabotage exemption for foreign vessels undertaking submarine cable repairs makes Malaysia appear “unfriendly” among foreign investors.
Geoffrey Williams of the Malaysian University of Science and Technology said the policy would give Malaysia a bad image for running a protectionist policy favouring local firms.
“This would affect the overall investment perception for Malaysia,” Williams said.
The cabotage exemption had previously allowed foreign vessels to perform undersea repair jobs. However, in November, transport minister Wee Ka Siong revoked the exemption for submarine cable repairs.

Phone tapping is the issue, not PKR-Umno pact, says Zaid |

PETALING JAYA: A former law minister has drawn attention to the problem of phone tapping and the infringement of privacy raised by a leaked telephone conversation purportedly between Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
Former de facto law minister Zaid Ibrahim said current debates must move beyond the topic of a possible cooperation between Umno and PKR.
“The people in the country should not get too excited about Zahid talking to Anwar because there’s nothing wrong with that. They’re not plotting anything illegal.
“The real issue is whether our conversations are being tapped. It is most unsettling and worrying and it should not be happening.”

After Liu’s Chinese ‘dilution’ remarks, Pua says DAP can do without race chauvinists |

KUALA LUMPUR, 13 April — Sungai Pelek assemblyman Ronnie Liu was insulting DAP with his inference that it must “out-Chinese” the rival MCA, Damansara MP Tony Pua said.
Responding to reports of Liu saying DAP should not sacrifice its Chinese identity and culture to fend off political rivals’ attacks, Pua argued that his party colleague was short sighted as such a strategy would leave it politically dependent on a Malay patron party.
“Frankly speaking, that is perhaps the biggest insult one can throw at the DAP today. MCA has ‘Chineseness’ themselves into oblivion today. They are completely at the mercy of the whims and fancies of the big-brothers, Umno, Bersatu and PAS who provide MCA with political life-support.
“And yet, Liu wants the party to reverse the progress we have made over more than a decade to protect our ‘Chineseness’. That is as chauvinist as one can get and the DAP can certainly do without such chauvinists in the party,” Pua said in a statement today.
Pursuing the strategy Liu wanted would doom DAP, Pua said when expressing relief that the former’s views were allegedly in the minority.
Pua added that he and other DAP colleagues have been working to shape DAP into an inclusive party based around justice, good governance and integrity, which he said was in line with party veteran Lim Kit Siang’s Malaysian Dream.

- Taiwan’s TSMC and South Korea’s Samsung Electronics control more than 70% of the semiconductor manufacturing market.
- A global semiconductor shortage and tensions with China have bolstered U.S. scrutiny of the supply chain and created a drive to regain leadership.
- Under President Joe Biden, the U.S. is looking to bring manufacturing back to American soil and reduce reliance on a handful of chipmakers.
GUANGZHOU, China — If you talk about chipmaking, two companies usually spring to mind — Taiwan’s TSMC and South Korea’s Samsung Electronics. The two Asian firms combined control more than 70% of the semiconductor manufacturing market.
The U.S., which was once a leader, lags behind in this space after monumental shifts in the business models in the semiconductor industry.
But a global semiconductor shortage and geopolitical tensions with China have bolstered Washington’s scrutiny of the supply chain, which is concentrated in the hands of a small number of players, and has created a drive to bring manufacturing back to American soil to regain leadership.
The U.S. has earmarked billions of dollars and is reportedly looking at alliances with other nations.
Semiconductors are critical to everything from cars to the smartphones we use. And they have also been thrust into the center of U.S.-China tensions.
“One characteristic of US policy is that it has heavy emphasis on China. This has now become a national imperative to enhance self-sufficiency in semis production, accelerated by the recent chip shortages and the ‘tech war’ against China,” Bank of America said in a note published Wednesday.

Fatwas must not violate constitution, says law expert |

PETALING JAYA: Any fatwa or religious edict should not violate the Federal Constitution, which is the supreme law of the country, says constitutional law expert Shad Saleem Faruqi.
Unfortunately, he said, civil courts tend to ignore these provisions on fundamental rights.
“So many fatwas are regarded as if they are independent of the constitution,” Shad Saleem said in a webinar titled “Freedom and Tolerance in Islam: Why We Need Some Rethinking” organised by G25 and Edunity Foundation.
He cited a court case involving independent preacher Fathul Bari Mat Jahya who was previously convicted of teaching Islam without credentials.

NGO Kuasa to launch election website to track GE15’s 20 most hotly-contested seats |

KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 — A website aimed at furnishing voters with the latest developments in relation to 20 hot seats, predicted to be key battlegrounds in the upcoming general election (GE15), will be launched on Wednesday by non-governmental organisation, Kuasa.
The website, according to Kuasa chief executive Praba Ganesan, will provide information on these seats such as potential candidates, the history of MPs in those constituencies, general information and local issues affecting the area, and links to election hopefuls’ official social media accounts.
When explaining the intentions behind the website, Praba said the portal, which will go ‘live’ on Wednesday afternoon, was set up to provide the correct demographics with relevant information on the personalities contesting in their constituencies.
He said this is to combat the predicament usually faced by voters, who, most of the time, have only eight to 10 days to familiarise themselves with candidates before deciding who to cast their vote for.

Show compassion when dealing with LGBTQ community, says Muslim scholar |

PETALING JAYA: A prominent Turkish scholar said compassion in Islam should be brought to the fore when dealing with the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community.
Mustafa Akyol said Muslims should understand that LGBTQ individuals endure a difficult life.
“They come with an inborn inclination which sees them harassed and looked down upon.
“I think the compassion of Islam, the respect of Islam should come to the fore,” he said at a webinar titled “Freedom and Tolerance in Islam: Why We Need Some Rethinking”, organised by G25 and Edunity Foundation.
Akyol, however, stated that he was not saying that Islam believes every sexual behaviour is morally right, adding that the religion also frowns upon pre-marital sex.
But, he said, a distinction needs to be made between Islam morally approving a certain behaviour and that of the people who have that certain behaviour as they are equal citizens with rights.

We have the tools to prevent monopolies, says MCMC |

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has given its assurance that it has tools in place to prevent monopolies.
It said this in responding to FMT over concerns from the public that the planned merger between telecommunications giants Celcom and Digi could lead to a monopoly and fewer options for consumers.
In a statement, MCMC said as a regulator, it will not comment on the merger until there is better clarity over the deal.
“Moreover, the regulatory framework in place has the right tools to prevent monopolies as well as ensuring that consumers are protected,” it said.
