KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 — Perikatan Nasional must urgently prove its majority support in Parliament to dispel the political uncertainty that could spook investors, said Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said in a video that investors would refrain from committing to Malaysia until they were certain about the government of the day.
He urged Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to convene Parliament for the latter’s proposed confidence vote now instead of September.
“If it’s true that you have the numbers, do it next week. If not, the country will be like this. It cannot be governed in a situation where the legitimacy is questionable. Who is going to come and invest?” Anwar said.

Act now before Johor becomes the next Klang Valley, says Yeo |

PETALING JAYA: The federal and Johor state governments must ramp up the vaccination programme in the state, says former energy, science, technology, environment and climate change minister Yeo Bee Yin.
This comes following a worrying upward trend of new daily Covid-19 positive cases and deaths in Johor, with a more than 150% increase from mid-July until now. Today, Johor reported 1,300 cases.
Despite the rise, Johor’s vaccination remains the second-lowest in Malaysia with only 17.8% of adults fully immunised against Covid-19.
Yeo, who is Bakri MP, called on the government to adopt Selangor’s vaccination programme through Operation Surge Capacity (OSC).
“Run OSC in Johor to ramp up the vaccination programme as soon as possible, just like how the Selangor state government is working with the federal government to run OSC in (the) Klang Valley,” she said in a Facebook post today.

PETALING JAYA: Umno has submitted even more statutory declarations from its MPs to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, notifying His Majesty of their withdrawal of support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, a party source has revealed.
Speaking to FMT, the source said this was the third batch of SDs sent to the King and would raise further questions over Muhyiddin’s majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
Yesterday evening, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi revealed the party had submitted additional statutory declarations from its MPs, stating their withdrawal of support for Muhyiddin.
The additional pullouts came after Muhyiddin, in a televised address, acknowledged that eight Umno MPs had withdrawn their support but insisted that the question of his resignation did not arise as he still enjoyed majority support.
After the third batch of SDs now, the source said: “I don’t know how the PM can state that he has majority support. The math just does not add up.”

KUALA LUMPUR: Activist Nathaniel Tan, who has gone on hunger strike since yesterday afternoon at Taman Tun Dr Ismail due to the worsening political instability and health crisis, has been questioned by police for his action.
He told FMT that some 10 policemen, with one officer carrying a submachine gun, visited him.
“They were not threatening but they started asking questions.
“They wanted to know what I am doing here and what the hunger strike is for,” he said.
Tan said more policemen are expected to question him later today.
He said he was feeling weaker but would not eat any food. “I will survive on water.”
On his decision to go on a hunger strike, he said it was time for action. “Enough talk. Enough press statements. Enough WhatsApp chats.”
He said freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi had brought the British Empire to its knees without firing a single shot.

After Sheraton, it’s the Seri Pacific Move, says Puad |

PETALING JAYA: After the Sheraton Move succeeded in establishing a “backdoor government”, the Seri Pacific Move is now targeting Umno leaders, Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has claimed.
He said the movement involved outsiders with the help of “enemies in disguise” within Umno itself.
Puad’s claim comes after he revealed yesterday that three Umno MPs had held a meeting at Seri Pacific hotel, located near the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, which houses Umno’s headquarters.
“We’ve heard of the Kajang Move and the Sheraton Move. The Sheraton Move was indeed successful,” he said in a Facebook post.
“Now there’s the Seri Pacific Move. The target is Umno. Who is involved? How much money is involved? Is there a ‘scheme of things’? Which Umno leaders go there often?”

No reunion on the cards for PH and Dr M, says analyst |

PETALING JAYA: Despite being together at Monday’s gathering of opposition MPs, an analyst does not believe a reunion is on the cards for Pakatan Harapan and its former chairman, Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia’s Wan Hashim Wan Teh described it as “impossible” as the current political situation was far different compared with the 14th general election in 2018.
He told FMT that PH then was just motivated by one thing – bringing down the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.
“Anwar Ibrahim and PKR will definitely continue working with DAP and Amanah, but there’s no way that Mahathir will work with Anwar.” he said.
“I don’t think they will come together to form ‘PH 2.0’ because they will still be split and in disagreement over their prime minister candidate.”

Honda Malaysia sees car sales plunge 52pc during FMCO, hopes auto sector will reopen soon for economy’s sake
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 ― Honda Malaysia took a major hit during the extended lockdown as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, with car sales declining 52 per cent for the year-on-year period between May to July 2021.
Its managing director and CEO Madoka Chujo said the car maker had to close its Pegoh, Melaka manufacturing plant as well as sales offices and dealer showrooms since June, in accordance with the government standard operating procedures during the full movement control order (FMCO).
“With only certain after-sales services allowed and sales and manufacturing operations on halt, it is no surprise that sales have plunged.
“We sold about 5,700 units in this period compared to close to 12,000 units sold in the same period last year when the country was under conditional movement control order (CMCO) and Recovery movement control order (RMCO),” she said in a statement today.

PETALING JAYA: More people are likely to take their frustrations to the streets if the economic sector remains closed, an MP has warned, as economic experts urge Putrajaya to review its lockdown policies.
Klang MP Charles Santiago said the government could no longer wait till daily Covid-19 cases drop to 4,000 to move into Phase 2 of the national recovery plan.
Selangor and Kuala Lumpur are currently under Phase 1, or total lockdown, imposed since June 1, allowing only essential sectors to operate.
Yesterday, the health ministry reported almost 20,000 new Covid-19 cases in the country.
With cases rising, Santiago said the government needed to rethink its strategies.

Muhyiddin misled the King, says PH presidential council |

PETALING JAYA: Muhyiddin Yassin did not speak the truth and misled the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, when he claimed he still has majority support in the Dewan Rakyat during his audience with the King.
The Pakatan Harapan presidential council rubbished the ;prime minister’s claim, saying it would be impossible for him to command majority support based on the number of MPs that had rejected his leadership.
“We are of the view that stern action must be taken against the fraud committed at the highest level by not speaking the truth and misleading the King,” it said in a statement.
The council said the matter can be confirmed by holding a special sitting of Parliament to debate and decide on a no-confidence vote against Muhyiddin.
“The act of postponing the confidence vote until September is highly inappropriate. The issue of support for Tan Sri Mahiaddin (Muhyiddin) and the stability of the Perikatan Nasional government must be decided now,” it said.
