PETALING JAYA: Former deputy international trade and industry minister Ong Kian Ming has urged the government to ratify two partnerships to increase foreign direct investment (FDI) and external trade.
The partnerships are the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
Stressing that it is his personal opinion, the DAP MP for Bangi said this would send a strong signal that Malaysia was indeed open for business and serious in its efforts to attract FDI.
“At the same time, this will strengthen our industrial base, with complementary domestic policies such as our Industry 4WRD or Industry 4.0 plan,” he said in a statement.

PETALING JAYA: A PKR MP has hit back at the party’s former deputy president, Azmin Ali, after the senior minister said the audio recording purportedly of Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Anwar Ibrahim is genuine.
Yesterday, Azmin, who is the Perikatan Nasional information chief, said he was certain it was Anwar’s voice in the recording.
“I think this is the biggest treachery Anwar has committed, not just against his party but also against Pakatan Harapan as PKR is a component party,” said Azmin, who also urged authorities to investigate the recording’s authenticity.
Speaking to FMT, Kapar MP Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid said even if the recording, which suggested that Anwar and Zahid were working together, was genuine, there was no issue at all.

Bersatu-PAS alliance will strengthen Perikatan, but a GE15 victory? Not so fast, say analysts
KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 — The alliance between Islamist party PAS and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) may serve to strengthen the flagging Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, but the dynamism of its unity will only be seen in the 15th general election, analysts said.
Those polled by Malay Mail opined that the situation remains too fluid for them to predict whether the cooperation between the two parties could scupper Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) chances at the polls.
Shazwan Mustafa Kamal, a senior associate with political risk and public policy consultancy Vriens & Partners, believes that Bersatu and PAS alone may not have enough star appeal to win the next national polls, and would need more allies down the road.
“Bersatu and PAS’ commitment to each other will help strengthen PN, given Umno’s recent decision to formally quit working with Bersatu in GE15. For one, the seat negotiations between Bersatu and PAS would likely be less complicated than with Umno.

PETALING JAYA: Outsiders should not interfere in the selection of candidates for Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the next general election (GE15) as it can harm ties within the coalition, says an aide to the Selangor menteri besar.
Juwairiya Zulkifli, the political secretary to Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari, said the selection of candidates was a matter for the top leadership to decide and any outside interference should be rejected.
“PH is facing various tests and attacks. There should be no ‘outside party’ interfering in the party’s internal decision-making process, let alone when it comes to selection of candidates,” she told FMT.
Juwairiya, who is also the Bukit Melawati assemblywoman, urged PH components, particularly PKR, to take action against supporters and members who undermine their party.

Why probe when there’s no criminal element in audio clip, lawyer asks IGP |

PETALING JAYA: The viral audio clip allegedly featuring opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is not a “seizable offence” and thus police have no power to investigate, a lawyer says.
Sankara N Nair, a Kuala Lumpur-based lawyer, questioned whose decision it was to commence an investigation, as he claimed there was no legal basis for the probe.
“There is one, and only one, provision as provided in Section 110 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC), which empowers the inspector-general of police to invoke his powers to commence a criminal investigation.
“And this is upon police receiving a report that discloses a seizable offence,” he said in a statement.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 11 — There are ongoing efforts to oust Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Umno's advisory board chairman Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah confirmed today.
However, the Umno veteran said this is unsurprising and common for anyone holding the highest post in the Malay-centric party.
“I have heard of such things, going on all the time. These are Malays. Whoever goes up must pull them down. I am not involved in such matters. If I wanted to fight, I’ll fight openly,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian in an interview.
However, the Gua Musang MP, commonly known as Ku Li, said ousting Zahid to enable Umno to return to the Perikatan Nasional fold will not succeed as the grassroots have made their intentions known.

MP SPEAKS | At the just concluded Pakatan Harapan leadership retreat at Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, yesterday, the coalition unanimously endorsed PKR president Anwar Ibrahim to be the prime minister candidate should Harapan win in the coming 15th general election (GE15).
At the age of 74, this may be the last chance for Anwar to be prime minister and I sincerely believe he deserves a chance to prove himself after waiting for more than two decades since the reformasi movement started in 1998.
The following are the reasons why I advocate for Anwar to be prime minister and I believe many Malaysians will share the same view after careful calculation of the imminent crisis our country is facing now.
As a multiracial country, Malaysia was known to be a model example of how the country projected its image that promotes racial and religious harmony, not to mention Tourism Malaysia’s slogan “Malaysia truly Asia”.

- Chinese regulators hit Alibaba with a 18.23 billion yuan ($2.8 billion) fine in its anti-monopoly investigation of the tech giant, saying it abused its market dominance.
- The probe’s main focus was a practice that forces merchants to choose one of two platforms, rather than being able to work with both.
- The company said in a statement it accepted the penalty and will comply with the regulator’s determination.
Chinese regulators hit Alibaba with a 18.23 billion yuan ($2.8 billion) fine in its anti-monopoly investigation of the tech giant, saying it abused its market dominance.
Regulators opened a probe into the company’s monopolistic practices in December. The investigation’s main focus was a practice that forces merchants to choose one of two platforms, rather than being able to work with both.
In a Saturday statement, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) said this policy stifles competition in China’s online retail market and “infringes on the businesses of merchants on the platforms and the legitimate rights and interests of consumers,” according to a CNBC translation of a Chinese-language statement.
