What's next for our MPs: Wait for the confidence vote in Parliament or band together and appoint a PM-designate now?

IPOH, Aug 8 — Does Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin still enjoy the confidence of the majority in Parliament? He says yes and will prove it when Parliament reconvenes in September.
Muhyiddin insisted he had the required majority support from lawmakers, in the form of statutory declarations (SDs), to continue as the prime minister, after a few Umno MPs had withdrawn their support for Perikatan Nasional (PN) and him as the prime minister.
Perak Opposition leader Abdul Aziz Bari said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin only remains as prime minister now because the Opposition bloc in Parliament did not have a designated prime minister despite commanding the majority.
Aziz Bari said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has to exercise his discretion by selecting the biggest group of MPs in the Dewan Rakyat with a designated candidate for the prime minister’s post.
“The scenario in Parliament now is that PN only has 103 MPs but they have a prime minister.
“The problem with the balance 117 MPs is that they only say ‘No’ to PN, but with no prime minister designate.
“Though we know 89 MPs (Pakatan Harapan) from this 117 agree to have Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the prime minister,” he said.
Aziz Bari said that the most practical way to solve the deadlock is for the 117 MPs to declare their support for Anwar, who is also the PKR president, as prime minister.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said he was not the person who contacted several Opposition lawmakers with offers for them to defect to Perikatan Nasional.
The Umno lawmaker insisted that his photograph was maliciously used as the contact image for the phone number used to send the text messages to the group, according to The Vibes news portal.
“It is fake. The person uses my photo, acts as me, calling and messaging these MPs, even asking them out for tea,” he was quoted as saying.
“Someone is misusing (my photo). It is not my number. These people have all sorts of tricks up their sleeves. They are crooks.”
Earlier today, DAP MP M. Kulasegaran claimed he was offered cash, a Cabinet post and additional incentives to defect and support the PN government.
Kulasegaran said the offer included a reference to “RM30 durian”, which he interpreted as code for RM30 million.
Other DAP MPs have also reportedly been offered similar offers, such as Kota Melaka’s Khoo Poay Tiong and Bandar Kuching’s Dr Kelvin Yii.

Govt has no solutions, just lip service, says Rafidah |

PETALING JAYA: The government is taking no real action to address the people’s issues aside from offering “sanctimonious statements and lip service”, former international trade and industry minister Rafidah Aziz has said.
Those in power are preoccupied with remaining there, she said, doing whatever it takes to fortify their positions while the country remains “on autopilot”.
In a Facebook post, Rafidah said the saving grace of the country in recent times had been its civil service, which is largely still committed to providing the people with the best service possible.
“Of course, there will always be the aberration of politics overriding everything and civil servants, with their best intentions for the people and country, being overruled and marginalised by their political bosses, or in the layman’s lingo, ‘the powers that be

#Lawan organisers vow to come out in larger numbers on Aug 21 if Muhyiddin stays as PM
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — Youth coalition Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) is once again demanding Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin resign as prime minister, vowing to host a larger #Lawan protest than the one on July 31 should he fail to do so.
Ahead of Muhyiddin’s plan to table a confidence motion in Dewan Rakyat in September, SSR said it plans to host its rally on August 21.
“Enough is enough. We do not need two-faced leaders who disrespect the main institutions of the country, especially Parliament, and practise double standards in its governance,” it said in a statement.

DAP MP lodges police report, says enticed with ‘RM30 durian’ and ministerial post to defect
![[Image: 0708_kulasegaran.jpeg]](https://media2.malaymail.com/uploads/articles/2021/2021-08/0708_kulasegaran.jpeg)
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — DAP MP M. Kulasegaran has lodged a police report today, claiming he was offered cash, a ministerial post and additional incentives to defect and support the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.
Kulasegaran said his secretary Jeremy Chuah had received a call and text message making that offer, which also included “RM30 durian” — a veiled reference to RM30 million cash — to replace Umno ministers Datuk Shamsul Anuar Nasarah and Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad who quit.
“Money and positions are not factors which can sway us to leave the party. We will swim or die with the party. If the need be we are ready and willing to stay put in the opposition without any perks for so long as it needs to come back to the government.
“I must stress that buying over MPs is also a betrayal towards Yang di-Pertuan Agong who is very concerned about the state of the nation, government and the Parliament. Don’t betray his trust,” he said in a statement.
The Ipoh Barat MP said DAP lawmakers will stay loyal to the party and are not for sale.
“We got elected by the people and it’s the people who will decide our fate and future. Although we are not in Government since the Sheraton Move we are still democratically elected representatives of the people, the rightful government,” he said.
Other DAP MPs have also reportedly been offered similar offer, such as Kota Melaka’s Khoo Poay Tiong and Bandar Kuching’s Dr Kelvin Yii.

Has Zahid lost control of Umno? Only over MPs, say analysts |

PETALING JAYA: Some people may be thinking Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has lost control of his party since most Umno MPs are refusing to toe the party line and withdraw support for the Perikatan Nasional-led (PN) government.
But this is not so, according to two analysts. They told FMT that Zahid still had the trust and support of the Umno grassroots.
Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya (UM) said MPs with ministerial posts and other government positions only appeared to have the upper hand over Zahid because of his exclusion from the Cabinet.
Noting that Zahid was the first Umno president without a Cabinet position, he said this made it easy for him to be belittled by Umno members with government positions.

From Shankaran Nambiar
Malaysia’s handling of the Covid-19 crisis and the resulting lockdown has come under severe criticism.
Adding to the injury is a crisis of political leadership, with frequent claims by opposition politicians that the current government does not command a parliamentary majority.
Still, a more critical and enduring salvo has come from foreign investors. More specifically, from the Japanese, Dutch and German trade associations that represent them.
The Japanese Chamber of Trade and Industry Malaysia, the Japan External Trade Organization, the Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Malaysian Dutch Business Council have each written scathing letters to the Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin pointing out flaws in his government’s Covid containment strategy, as well as its implementation.
These trade associations have a long list of complaints that focus mainly on poorly designed movement control orders, a lack of understanding of the needs of industry and inadequate implementation.
The bottom line is that their members, and the billions of dollars worth of business investment they represent, may want to move out of Malaysia.
This hits at the heart of the Malaysian development model, a model that depends on foreign direct investment.

Seven residents of Belgian nursing home die after outbreak of B.1.621 lineage of COVID-19
Aug 6 (Reuters) - Seven residents of a nursing home in Belgium have died after being infected with a lineage of the coronavirus first detected in Colombia despite being fully vaccinated, the virology team that conducted tests said on Friday.
The virology team said the residents had been infected with the B.1.621 lineage of COVID-19 that originated in Colombia and has been detected in recent weeks in the United States but cases in Europe have been rare.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has listed the B1.621 lineage as part of the Kappa variant of the coronavirus, but not as a variant itself.
The seven people who died at the nursing home in the Belgian town of Zaventem, near Brussels, were all in their 80s or 90s, and some of them were already in a poor physical condition, said Marc Van Ranst, a virologist at the University of Leuven which conducted tests on the virus found at the nursing home.

GEORGE TOWN: Ismail Sabri Yaakob appears to be stuck between trying to shore up Umno’s support for the prime minister and keeping the party intact.
It does not help him that Umno is already divided between a camp supporting Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and another against him.
“Ismail is caught in the middle. It’s a dilemma facing many leaders in Umno,” said Ibrahim Suffian of Merdeka Center.
Speaking to FMT, he said Ismail had to handle two core issues facing Umno – one a dispute over the position of its president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and the other the issue of seat allocations for the next general election (GE15).
He said some party members saw Zahid as a weak leader and one who could affect the party’s confidence in going into future elections.

Vote now to determine PM’s legitimacy, says legal expert |

PETALING JAYA: The law requires Muhyiddin Yassin to submit to a test of his legitimacy as prime minister the moment a doubt arises, according to constitutional expert Bastion Pius Vendargon.
Speaking to FMT, Vendargon cited Article 43 of the Federal Constitution, according to which a vote has to be taken when there is any doubt about the prime minister’s majority support in the Dewan Rakyat.
He added that Muhyiddin could “satisfy the country and the whole world of his legitimacy” only if the vote were to show he commanded the support of the majority of MPs.
He remarked: “When there is a doubt, how can the prime minister and the Cabinet go about spending public funds and deciding public policies?”
