Leaked Anwar-Zahid audio: We’re missing the point
Posted by: superadmin - 04-10-2021, 10:31 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Quote:The police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission must probe this issue to find out who did the tapping – if this is not a fake audio – and level criminal charges against that person or persons.

Older people would remember that Richard Nixon was forced to resign as president of the United States over a tapping incident which became known as the Watergate Scandal.

A leaked audio of a purported conversation between Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has gone viral and is the latest hot topic.

Members of the public are sharing reports about the matter and politicians are weighing in, as usual, on the purported conversation and what it means. Some people – especially those against Zahid and Anwar – are excited about this for, if true, it shows the leaders in opposing camps have been playing a game.

I am fine with people discussing such issues and I too would like to know if it is true or not, but I think we may be missing the most substantial point in the current debate.

It has been alleged that Anwar (or the voice purported to be that of Anwar) congratulated Zahid for proposing to members that Umno sever ties with Perikatan Nasional (PN), and on the outcome of the recent Umno general assembly.

Zahid (or the voice purported to be that of the Umno president) is reported to have suggested, among other things, that the public statement about “No Anwar, no PPBM, no DAP” in forming any alliance to face the general election was a “tactical” move.

Zahid is also alleged to have said: “You know who my teacher is right? My teacher is the person I am talking to right now.”

The Umno president, who is facing 47 charges related to graft and abuse of power, has denied that he had spoken to Anwar after the Umno assembly.

“I was utterly disappointed and shocked over the spread of an audio recording, allegedly between me and Anwar,” he said, adding that he had instructed his officer to lodge a police report for an investigation to identify the mastermind behind this.

Among the politicians who have commented on this leaked audio is former Barisan Nasional secretary-general Annuar Musa who said: “I am 100% sure that the voices are genuine.”

He said he had listened to the audio repeatedly and because he was familiar with Zahid and Anwar he was convinced the voices belonged to them. Annuar has called on Zahid to come clean.

Outspoken Umno MP and former minister Nazri Aziz said: “I’m urging the home minister to investigate since a police report has been made. We cannot leave it just like that. We really want to know whether it’s true or fake. Only an investigation by the police will give us the real story.”

Nazri, of course, has been calling on Zahid to relinquish his post as Umno president as he is seen as a liability to the party because of the charges hanging over his head.

Let me state here that I too feel Umno can reform and perform better in the next general election if Zahid were to step down, at least until his court cases are cleared.

I too agree that an investigation should be carried out into the latest leaked audio. If it is fake, it could be considered slanderous. If it is true, it would mean PKR and Umno are cooperating.

However, the investigation should be into how, if the audio clip is genuine, someone was able to tap into the telephone conversation of private citizens.

There is nothing criminal about Anwar and Zahid speaking on the phone even if they are in opposition parties. Malaysians have come to expect politicians to plot against each other and backstab each other to stay in power or to gain power, especially after the “Sheraton Move” of 2020.

We know that before the “Sheraton Move” that toppled the Pakatan Harapan government, PPBM leaders and some PKR leaders had discussed tactics with leaders of PAS and Umno.

But there was nothing criminal about it. It might be unethical, but not criminal.

  Let’s be fair to DAP
Posted by: superadmin - 04-10-2021, 10:07 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

By Moaz Nair

“Pit race against race, religion against religion, prejudice against prejudice. We must not let this happen here.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Using DAP as a threat to scare the Malays has become a political cliche among some politicians from the Malay-based political parties.

Ironically, almost all Malay-based parties and Malay leaders have worked with DAP in Malaysian politics. With the present political uncertainties in the country, post-15th general election will probably see Malay-based political parties again working with DAP, as no single party is likely to form the government without roping in their adversaries.

Possibly, the country will then see a unity government and this will augur well for it.

Malaysian politics must be one of a kind in the world where race and religion are often overtly used by some political parties to seek power. DAP is often used as the bogeyman by the Malay-based political parties, enough to scam the naive and gullible voters in the country for politicians to achieve their political goals.

Speeches among some failing politicians do not lack the habit of stereotyping the narrative that DAP can be a threat to their race and religion. Sowing hatred for DAP in the name of politics is not going to bring any economic benefits to the nation. What more, not all Malaysians will fall to a political cheat that DAP is a threat to the Malay race, Islam and the royalty.

A political ploy

Politics in the country has evolved for many years since independence and it has led to Malays being split into many political parties. When these parties of single race and religion squabble among themselves to seek power and dominance over each other, DAP is needlessly made the punching bag.

This is a political ploy to divert attention from the reality and hoodwink the masses. The people have come to realise that this is all a game of power and has nothing to do with racial unity in the real sense or that DAP will arrogate Malay political power in the country.

If truth be told, it’s the fear of losing power and Malay support that some Malay-based parties are demonising DAP, even to the extent of describing the latter as “extreme”.

DAP is a multi-racial party. Never in the history of DAP’s party manifesto has it shown any aversion towards the Malays, Islam or the royal institution.

The party, on the other hand, has set a lofty principle that the country should be governed with full accountability and that race and religion should not be the stumbling block to progress. People of all races and religions should have a fair share of the nation’s wealth and opportunities.

To DAP, deserving Malaysians irrespective of their race or religion should be acknowledged as rightful citizens and no Malaysian should be discriminated against based on race or religion.

Disparaging DAP, hence, is not going to make the party less popular among sensible Malaysians. In fact, Malay-based political parties working with DAP would be an asset for the country, as the latter has many capable no-nonsense leaders who could help bring progress to the nation.

The clarion call for unity among the dominant Malay parties after the 14th general election has been confined to race and religion. Yet the nation sees the three major Malay-based parties – Umno, PPBM and PAS – wrangling among themselves, each seeking dominance over the other. DAP is not at all part of this equation, yet the party is without reason impugned by some Malay political leaders for their own internal glitches.

Interestingly, the country is not short of Malay-based political parties. Pejuang and Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra), among others, for their political mileage, have joined in the fray chorusing the same tune – Malay unity and that DAP is a “thorn in the side”. With almost half a dozen Malay-based parties vying for support from the Malay race only proves that Malay unity in politics is just a utopian idea and it can never come about. It has, in fact, divided the Malay race politically.

YOURSAY | Where’s the crime in Zahid-Anwar audio clip?
Posted by: superadmin - 04-10-2021, 09:40 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 05cc3403db1fe1e99fe5e81a3416e291.jpg=s660]

Malaysia Bharu: The IGP must tell us why whatever Zahid and Anwar spoke over the telephone is a police matter? What law has been breached?

In the case of the Azmin Ali video, there was allegedly evidence of obscenity or more, clearly an offence under the Penal Code, but no action was taken till today.

The police should get their priorities right and stop wasting taxpayers’ money. The IGP should lead his men in the right direction of law enforcement and stop dancing to the tune of politicians who are the cause of all that is ailing in this country.

Kawak: When there is some element of crime in some incident involving certain VVIP politicians, no action is taken.

When two politicians from different parties communicate over the phone without infringing any law, the police are eager to probe. Impartial?

Oxymoronictendencies: Why the need to authenticate the audio clip? Either way, the illicit recording of the conversation is illegal, so surely they should be identifying the criminals who did it. Or perhaps that might embarrass the wrong people?

Are the police here to protect the rakyat and enforce the law or rather just to find ways to harass innocent individuals (in this case politicians) who are an embarrassment or headache to the government of the day?

Meanwhile, Ketereh MP Annuar Musa called for a religious oath to be taken by the parties involved. We have seen many politicians in the past take "religious oaths" and claim that it absolved them and proved their innocence.

I personally doubt the sincerity or substance of an oath given by a Malaysian politician - religious or otherwise.

PETALING JAYA: The government’s handling of the country’s cabotage issue may lead to Malaysia becoming an international joke, Umno’s deputy president says.

Mohamad Hasan said that if the government lacks foresight, it should listen to stakeholders’ opinions before making decisions impacting multibillion-ringgit deals.

In a statement, he said Malaysia had distinctive advantages over others to encourage giant technology companies to instal undersea cables.

“(We have) an outreaching and well-connected network of roads, small geography yet strategically located, and human capital.

Why back those who want to destroy us, Najib asks ‘Umno 3.0’ leaders
Posted by: superadmin - 04-09-2021, 09:23 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Zahid-Hamidi-N-Najib-Razak-Bernama-090421.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak has slammed a reported move to oust Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, asking why there are leaders who would support PPBM, which wants to destroy their party.

There has been widespread speculation of plans to get rid of Zahid and replace him with a new leadership dubbed “Umno 3.0”. The plans also reportedly include removing Najib, Zahid’s predecessor, from the picture by August.

Earlier today, sources told FMT that Umno 3.0 would work with PPBM and PAS, with calls for Zahid to step down as president expected to get louder in the coming days.

In a Facebook post, Najib said that working with PPBM would be going directly against the wishes of the grassroots, with 143 of 190 divisions having already decided that Umno should break its ties with the Muhyiddin Yassin-led party.

He warned Umno 3.0 leaders that going against the voice of the grassroots would see them being punished badly in the party polls.

LONDON, April 9 — Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth’s husband and a pivotal figure in the British royal family for almost seven decades, has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace said today.

The Duke of Edinburgh, as he was officially known, had been by his wife’s side throughout her 69-year reign, the longest in British history. During that time he earned a reputation for a tough, no-nonsense attitude and a propensity for occasional gaffes.

“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the palace said in a statement.

“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”

Zahid’s position ‘untenable’, hold party polls now, says Khairy
Posted by: superadmin - 04-09-2021, 03:09 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: KHAIRY_JAMALUDDIN_MOSTI_FMT_23122020-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Khairy Jamaluddin today said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s position has become “untenable” and the party elections due by June should be held immediately.

He said many in the party have become increasingly uncomfortable over the purported phone conversation between Zahid and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim. The recording has been spread widely over social media.

“I think many people in the party are very uncomfortable over the phone conversation, purportedly between Zahid and Anwar. I think Zahid’s position is increasingly untenable as president of the party.

“Hence, the party’s Supreme Council must meet immediately and allow for the party elections to take place immediately.
