U.S. will use all steps necessary to defend its economic interests against China, top trade official says
  • U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai slammed China’s unfair trade practices and vowed to protect U.S. economic interests in a speech Monday.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai slammed China’s unfair trade practices and vowed to protect U.S. economic interests in a speech Monday, adding that the Biden administration will rally allies in order to push back on the world’s second-largest economy.

“Our objective is not to inflame trade tensions with China,” Tai said in an address to an audience at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank.

“But above all else, we must defend to the hilt our economic interests and that means taking all steps necessary to protect ourselves against the waves of damage inflicted over the years through unfair competition,” said Tai, the nation’s top trade official.

During her address, Tai confirmed a CNBC report last week saying that the Biden administration believed that Beijing has not complied with the phase one trade deal.

The Earth isn't as bright as it once was
Posted by: superadmin - 10-05-2021, 02:28 PM - Forum: Astronomy - No Replies

(CNN)A new finding that seems a little out of this world is a new reality for researchers who have been studying the cosmos for the last two decades.

They discovered the Earth is not as bright as it once was and has been dimming at a noticeable pace in the last few years.

Using a telescope which does not look much different from the one you could have in your home, researchers from the Big Bear Solar Observatory have been taking measurements each night for the last 20 years, to study the sun's solar cycle and cloud cover.

They did this by measuring the "earthshine," which occurs when "the dark face of the Moon catches Earth's reflected glow and returns that light," according to NASA. The amount of earthshine will vary from night to night and season to season.

Chinese developer Fantasia fails to make debt payments
Posted by: superadmin - 10-05-2021, 01:54 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

BEIJING – Another Chinese homebuilder has hit financial trouble after it missed payments on debt obligations, adding to worries over the country’s property sector as embattled giant China Evergrande teeters on the brink of collapse.

Fears of contagion through the Chinese economy have grown as Evergrande, the most indebted of the country’s private homebuilders, struggles with more than US$300 billion (RM1.2 trillion) in liabilities and heads towards a massive restructuring.

Fantasia Holdings failed to repay a US$205.7 million note yesterday, the Shenzhen-based company said in a statement.

This came as property management firm Country Garden Services Holdings added that a unit of Fantasia had missed repayment on a 700 million yuan loan, saying it is likely Fantasia will default.

The news comes as investors await news from Evergrande after it suspended trading of its shares yesterday pending an announcement on a “major transaction”, with reports saying Hong Kong real estate firm Hopson Development Holdings planned to buy a 51% stake in its property services arm.

Zahid’s call for Melaka polls gets the thumbs down
Posted by: superadmin - 10-05-2021, 12:09 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: dewan-undangan-negeri-melaka-dun-melaka-...0621-3.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: The head of an election watchdog group and a political analyst have given the thumbs down to a call by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for a state election to be held in Melaka.

An election should be the last option during the Covid-19 pandemic, said Bersih 2.0 chairman Thomas Fann and political analyst Azmi Hassan.

Zahid had called for an election after four assemblymen said they did not support the state government led by chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali.

Fann said it was premature to declare that Sulaiman’s government had fallen, unless he fails a confidence vote or if the chief minister has tendered his resignation.

“Holding a snap election is an option but given that Undi18 and automatic voter registration have not been implemented, and Covid-19 remains a threat, it should be a last option,” he told FMT.

Politicians have turned themselves into commodities: Tok Mat
Posted by: superadmin - 10-05-2021, 08:56 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 01102020-KUL-mohamad_hasan-umno-vibes_pic.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – The attitude of politicians who turn themselves into “commodities” has put the country in a very awkward and unprecedented political situation, said Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

He said that these politicians were also no longer loyal to the party and their voters.

“They trade themselves as if they are political commodities”, so this is the situation we are facing now.

“The most unfortunate thing is that Malaysia’s political morale is weakened in terms of values and principles,” he said during the Terus Terang Bersama Tok Mat talk show programme broadcast online on Umno’s Facebook page last night.

He said this when commenting on the country’s political crisis of late, which has resulted in Malaysia having three prime ministers in three years.

Mohamad said political parties opening the door for party-hopping politicians had made the situation worse and, in fact, these “traitors” were being hailed by some.

Can a ‘yes’ from Petronas reduce the prices of our vegetables?
Posted by: superadmin - 10-05-2021, 08:53 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: 20211004-petronas-samur-sabah-petronas_pic.jpeg]

KOTA KINABALU – Getting an agreement from Petronas to distribute granulated urea domestically may reduce the prices of vegetables for local consumers for a long time to come.

This statement may seem illogical, but there is an explanation for it based on how the national oil and gas company is linked to agricultural products.

It is especially true for Sabah, which presents an interesting case study for this scenario.

According to sources, many local industries have been affected during the pandemic, contributing to their lowering their demand for imported products from China.

Naturally, this has in turn led to a reduction in the number of containers transported on ships from China to Malaysia. However, while the shipping cost remains the same, the transportation fee for essential goods imported from China has been raised.

These essential goods include fertiliser needed by farmers in Sabah. With the increase in transportation fees, the higher cost is passed on to the farmers who have to pay more to grow our agricultural products such as vegetables.

Sources say this problem would not exist if Sabah was not so dependent on China’s fertiliser. In fact, the issue could have been averted if Sabah produced its own fertilisers.

Speed skater Elise Christie reveals drug and rape ordeal
Posted by: superadmin - 10-05-2021, 08:48 AM - Forum: International News - No Replies

TRIPLE world short track champion speed skater Elise Christie has opened up on the night she was drugged and raped when 19 in her autobiography, Resilience.

The Great Britain star said "I went out, got drugged and then got raped by some random bloke."

The incident occurred after she had returned from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games on a night out.

She was raped after meeting the man in a bar in Nottingham city centre.

Christie who has represented Great Britain at three Winter Olympics has spoken for the first time about her ordeal.

“It was a year before I told anyone at all about that night.

“I felt victim-shamed, almost, by what happened. I wasn’t left in a bush, battered and beaten up, so back then I thought: ‘It’s not rape.’”

In relating her experience Christie says she felt impaired and the body was not functioning. She just could not run away as she kept falling to the ground.

She believes her drink had been spiked and thus her inability to do anything.

Umno PM, but not an Umno govt, says Tok Mat
Posted by: superadmin - 10-05-2021, 08:39 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The federal government may be led by an Umno leader but not all of Putrajaya’s policies are in line with the party’s stand, says Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

Mohamad, who is commonly known as Tok Mat, said the people needed to understand that Umno and the government were separate entities because the party was not running the government on its own.

“There are party policies that the government cannot support, and there are government policies that are not in line with the party’s stand,” he said in an interview with Umno Online.

One such policy, he said, was the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s government and Pakatan Harapan leaders to bring about “political stability and transformation”.

“Many people ask us about the MoU when the party still says ‘No Anwar, No DAP’ and ‘No Bersatu’ for the next election.”

He said Umno remained firm in its “No Anwar, No DAP” stand as resolved in the party’s annual general meeting.

Melaka a testing ground for Umno-Bersatu fight, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 10-05-2021, 08:33 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: If state assembly elections are called in Melaka, the battle will be a litmus test for when Umno and Bersatu square off at the next general election, say two political analysts.

James Chin of the University of Tasmania’s Asia Institute said the only way out of the political crisis in the state was for state elections to be held – at which the lines between Umno and Bersatu would be drawn.

“If it is a free-for-all, the people will review the (Umno versus Bersatu) results and strategise for the next general election,” Chin told FMT.

Speculation about elections in Melaka arose when four state assemblymen said yesterday they had retracted their support for chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali.

The four included Umno Sungai Udang assemblyman Idris Haron, a former former chief minister, who declared that the state government had collapsed.

[Image: 211004020030-battle-of-lake-changjin-pos...ge-169.jpg]

Hong Kong (CNN Business)A film glorifying the heroism of Chinese soldiers fighting American troops during the Korean War smashed box office records for China's National Day holiday.

"The Battle at Lake Changjin" — commissioned by the Chinese government — has grossed an estimated 1.85 billion yuan ($287 million) since its release on Thursday, according to ticketing app Maoyan. It beat the previous record for the same Chinese holiday set by "My People, My Country," which grossed more than 1.5 billion yuan ($233 million) over five days in 2019.

"The Battle at Lake Changjin" was released at the start of the week-long holiday in China and was also timed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Communist Party.

It tells the story of the brutal 1950 Battle of Chosin Reservoir in the Korean War. The Chinese side claims it as the most critical victory of the conflict, known in China as the "War to Resist American Aggression and Aid Korea."
