KUALA LUMPUR – Dismissing opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s request to discuss the Pandora Papers in the lower house today, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun said that the RM900 billion outflow revealed in the exposé was “not urgent”.
Despite his admittance that it is an important matter, Azhar turned to Standing Order 23(1)i, saying MPs are not allowed to use media reports to bring up issues in the lower house.
“I agree that it must be investigated. The problem is, I don’t think it is urgent. Our meeting prioritises the Order Papers. When we need to set them aside, it means that something is urgent.

KUALA LUMPUR – Umno has to move on from the uncertainty that Muafakat Nasional is mired in, seeing that its political partner PAS has paired up with rival coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN) to face the next general election, said Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He reiterated this a week after hinting that seats in the upcoming general election would be a “free-for-all”, and negotiations to form the government could be done after the election results were out.
“Umno’s resolution following the general assembly was to not work with Bersatu in the next election, but PAS’ leadership declared its loyalty to Bersatu and its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin after joining PN – knowing the agenda behind the formation of Bersatu.
“Umno also has to face facts – the uncertainties in MN are a hindrance to preparations ahead of the next general election.

PETALING JAYA: Umno has not decided on whether it will work with other parties or contest alone in the Melaka state election, said its deputy president, Mohamad Hasan.
The party’s election director, who is better known as Tok Mat, said that for now, the priority was making preparations for “all possibilities” in the election.
“Let’s not expect outside help in order to win. We must build our own internal strength,” he said after holding a meeting with Melaka’s Umno machinery in Alor Gajah last night, Bernama reported.
Present at the meeting were Melaka Umno liaison committee chairman Ab Rauf Yusoh and Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.

PETALING JAYA: Any attempt to hold an election in Melaka will be a “bold act of disrespect” given the current state of Malaysia’s fight against Covid-19, said former Sabah chief minister Salleh Said Keruak.
This comes after the Melaka state assembly was dissolved yesterday following the withdrawal of four assemblymen from the ruling Umno-led coalition, robbing it of the majority it needed to stay in power.
In a Facebook post, Salleh said that with the people still struggling to cope with the impact of the pandemic, their needs must come first before political jostling.
“Political ethics demands us to put our differences aside and put the national and rakyat’s interests as our primary concern in this pandemic situation. If we are to build political stability, political infighting must stop,” he said.

Bersih 2.0 lays out wish list for contesting parties in Melaka polls |

PETALING JAYA: Election reform group Bersih 2.0 has laid out its wish list for political parties in case an election is held in Melaka following the dissolution of its state assembly.
The Bersih steering committee said while it does not believe an election of any kind is appropriate during the Covid-19 pandemic, declaring an emergency in the state to delay elections is a more unwise move.
The group laid out three key reforms it wants to see the contesting parties adopt:- Drawing up an enactment to dismiss assemblymen who jump parties or from one coalition to another;
- Amending the state constitution to mandate a vote of confidence in the chief minister on the first day of the first state assembly sitting and to only allow for a chief minister to be axed if a replacement with a suitable majority exists; and
- Enacting a new law to ensure fair and equitable community development allocations to all members of the state legislature.
Bersih said people need to punish political parties and elected representatives who are still suffering from the “Sheraton syndrome” and refuse to end a political turmoil out of selfishness.

MELAKA, Oct 5 — The Melaka Perikatan Nasional (PN) is ready to hold talks with state Umno, to avoid three-cornered fights in the upcoming state election.
Its chairman, Datuk Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen, said that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), together with PAS and Gerakan, had made a stand that there would be no clashes in seizing the state seats.
“We are open if Melaka Umno wants to negotiate with state PN to avoid three-corner fights. If Umno is ready then we will think the next course of action.
“As long as we have yet to know Umno’s decision, we will not go into detail, and that it (distribution of seats) is too far off. We are waiting for Umno to make a decision,” he said at a press conference in Ayer Keroh here today.
Also present were state PAS commissioner, Datuk Kamaruddin Sidek, and state Gerakan chairman, Datuk Seri Michael Gan Peng Lam.
Meanwhile, Mohd Rafiq, who is also the state Bersatu leadership body chief, said that the membership of Bersatu assemblyman Datuk Noor Effandi Ahmad was automatically revoked following his actions in withdrawing support for the state government led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.

Historical climate emissions reveal responsibility of big polluting nationxs |

Analysis of the total carbon dioxide emissions of countries since 1850 has revealed the nations with the greatest historical responsibility for the climate emergency. But six of the top 10 have yet to make ambitious new pledges to cut their emissions before the crucial UN Cop26 climate summit in Glasgow in November.
The six include China, Russia and Brazil, which come only behind the US as the biggest cumulative polluters. The UK is eighth and Canada is 10th. Carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere for centuries and the cumulative amount of CO2 emitted is closely linked to the 1.2C of heating the world has already seen.
At the UN negotiations, historical emissions underpin the claims for climate justice made by developing nations, along with the disparity in wealth of nations. Countries that grew rich on fossil fuels have the greatest responsibility to act, developing nations say, and to provide funding for low-CO2 development and protection against the impacts of global heating.

Nasdaq ends sharply down; rising Treasury yields sink Big Tech |

Wall Street ended sharply lower on Monday as investors dumped Big Tech and other growth stocks in the face of rising Treasury yields, while concerns about a potential U.S. government debt default also fed caution.
Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet, the U.S. stock market's four most valuable companies, each dropped more than 2 percent.
Facebook, the fifth most valuable company, slumped almost 5 percent after its app and its photo-sharing platform Instagram were down for thousands of users, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com.
"For Big Tech, this is a short- to medium-term thing, part of a correction process. Rates were clearly too low, due in large part to central bank policies, and now as investors anticipate those policies getting clawed back, rates are moving closer to their real value," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Cresset Wealth Advisors in Palm Beach, Florida.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 — The government has offered incentives in the form of direct and indirect tax relief for the assembly or manufacturing of electric vehicles (EV), component parts, and the development of EV ecosystems such as charging facilities.
Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said among the incentives are pioneer status for the production of original goods, investment tax allowance, and the exemption of import and excise duties.
“Malaysia takes the ‘compare and offer’ approach by forming a comprehensive, clear and consistent policy to entice EV use, while our regional competitors focus on incentives to OEMs (original equipment manufacturers),” he told the Dewan Rakyat during his winding-up speech for his ministry for the recently tabled 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP).
