Forget it, Zahid tells group pushing for early party polls

PETALING JAYA: There is a movement within Umno paying off the grassroots to get them to push for the party’s polls to be held before the next general election, claims Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Addressing the 2,666 delegates from across the country at today’s Umno general assembly, Zahid also alleged that the movement was also trying to pay off members at the Johor and Melaka elections as well as yesterday’s Wanita, Youth and Puteri assemblies.

“This is a borderless world, so I know,” he said.

“Forget about all that. It is important that we are united to face the general election together.

Perak exco man ordered to pay Guan Eng RM250,000 over headscarf claim
Posted by: superadmin - 03-18-2022, 03:23 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

GEORGE TOWN: The High Court has ordered a Perak executive councillor to pay Lim Guan Eng RM250,000 in damages and make a public apology over a Facebook post deemed defamatory to the former Penang chief minister.

Razman Zakaria, who is also the Perak PAS chief, claimed in a Facebook post on Nov 18, 2017, that Lim was supporting a so-called ban on hotel workers wearing headscarves, with the Penang government in full support.

im sued Razman, saying the post was made up and aimed at tarnishing his reputation and making him look like one who had no respect for Islam and Malay culture.

In a ruling by judicial commissioner Amarjeet Singh on Monday, Razman was ordered to pay Lim RM150,000 in general damages and RM100,000 in aggravated and exemplary damages.

Amarjeet also ordered Razman to make a public apology on his Facebook page within the next 14 days and for Lim’s Facebook page to be tagged to the apology post.

Tok Mat seen as making push for open-mindedness in Umno
Posted by: superadmin - 03-18-2022, 10:58 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An analyst has described Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan’s speech at the party’s general assembly as “very surprising” for its call for moderation, diversity and the need to ensure non-Malay support for Umno.

Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara told FMT he saw it as a brave address aimed at pushing Umno’s grassroots towards open-mindedness.

He said it was also a message to the party’s potential partners.

“Come GE15, Umno wants to form the government and it needs all the help it can get from non-Malay voters,” he said.

“But first of all, the grassroots need to be open to this. It will be interesting to see how the three party wings debate this.”

PM will give in to Umno’s push for early GE15, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 03-18-2022, 09:16 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob will eventually give in to Umno’s demand for a general election (GE15) this year, a political analyst said.

Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid said this would likely happen after the expiry of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the government and Pakatan Harapan (PH) in July.

“It all depends on Ismail now. Whose interests does he want to prioritise? Supposedly national interests, which means prolonging the tenure of his Perikatan Nasional (PN) mates in the Cabinet, or Umno’s interests?” he told FMT.

Fauzi said Ismail would give in to Umno’s demands as his renomination as a candidate in GE15 depended on the party leadership.

International voices urge US explanation for bioweapons accusations
Posted by: superadmin - 03-18-2022, 09:08 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Russia is now strengthening its accusations against the US of developing biological weapons in Ukraine with documents and evidence it had detained amid its military operations in its neighboring country, and the US keeps claiming that Russia's accusations are "disinformation" even if statements from different officials of the Biden administration are contradictory, and this has caused rising international concerns over US biolabs worldwide.

Russian President Vladimir Putin gave an extensive speech on the Ukraine crisis on Wednesday. "There was a network of dozens of laboratories in Ukraine, where military biological programs were conducted under the guidance and with the financial support of the Pentagon, including experiments with coronavirus strains, anthrax, cholera, African swine fever and other deadly diseases," Putin said during his speech.

Putin noted that "frantic attempts" are underway to conceal the "traces of these secret programs," according to RT.

Three candidates vying to be next leader of DAP’s youth wing
Posted by: superadmin - 03-17-2022, 08:12 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – As expected, DAP’s youth wing (Dapsy) will be seeing a new chief as incumbent Howard Lee has “graduated” to running for the central executive committee (CEC), leaving his post wide open to three contenders.

A list of candidates – released ahead of the wing’s national congress on Saturday – sees Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen, Bandar Utama assemblywoman Jamaliah Jamaluddin, and current Dapsy secretary Eric Teh Hoong Keat vying for the top spot.

The list sighted by The Vibes also shows Sarawakian Abdul Aziz Isa Marindo, Alice Lan Suet, and assistant secretary for DAP women’s wing Young Syefura Othman (Rara) vying for the post of Dapsy deputy chief.

Another seven candidates, including Bukit Bintang Dapsy chief Raja Ahmad Iskandar Fareez Raja Shamsul Kamal, Annun Nancy Gunasekaran, Jason Raj Kirupanantha, Keristinah Philip Selvaarju, Michelle Ng Mei Sze, and Ginger Phoong Jin Zhe, are contending to be among the four designated vice-chiefs.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) will not call for the state legislative assemblies it administers to be dissolved, and instead let them complete their full term until next year.

In a statement today, the PH presidential council said it decided on this after considering numerous factors.

“The presidential council decided that the state governments of Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan, which PH administers, will not be advised to dissolve until the expiration of their terms in 2023.

Reduce expenditure on civil service, says former treasury sec-gen Sheriff
Posted by: superadmin - 03-17-2022, 07:34 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya must find ways to bring down its expenditure on the civil service, former treasury secretary-general Sheriff Kassim said.

“Their (civil service) salaries and pensions account for about 45% of the operating budget of the federal government,” he said in a talk organised by the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research today.

After taking into account statutory payments like debt servicing and grants to state governments, there would not be much left in the operating expenditure for the maintenance of public facilities, he said.

Sheriff said the reduction of expenditure on the civil service has to be done in stages, and suggested introducing measures practised in the private sector.

Trust account funds only enough to repay 1MDB’s 2022 debt: Tengku Zafrul
Posted by: superadmin - 03-17-2022, 03:02 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20211109-tengku_zafrul_tengku_abdul_aziz-bernama.jpeg]

KUALA LUMPUR – The remaining funds in 1MDB’s Assets Recovery Trust Account are only sufficient to repay debts and principal for this year but are insufficient to cover outstanding payments from 2023 to 2039.

This was revealed by Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz in a written parliamentary reply made available to the media this morning.

According to the minister, the balance in the trust account today stood at RM15.76 billion, which he said was even insufficient to cover for the entirety of the RM16.18 billion due this year.

To make up for this shortfall, Tengku Zafrul said the government has allocated an additional RM1.53 billion for the purpose of interest repayment for 2022.

“Based on the cash flow of 1MDB debt repayment, by taking into account the expected settlements to be received in the future, the government must still cover a shortfall of RM17 billion of the RM38.8 billion debt from 2022 to 2039.”

The future settlements involve RM515 million from Ambank and US$954 million (RM4 billion) of assets to be recovered from Goldman Sachs.

Najib only going through due process in new evidence play: lawyers
Posted by: superadmin - 03-17-2022, 02:57 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 15032022-KUL-Kes_rayuan_Najib_Razak_di_M...aya_5.jpeg]

KUALA LUMPUR – The act of filing several appeals in Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s bid to overturn his conviction in the RM42 million SRC International Sdn Bhd corruption case has caught much attention this week.

While it may seem like a possible attempt to buy more time to avoid facing the music, criminal lawyers observing the case have asserted that the former prime minister is not wasting judicial time as he is only going through the due process of law.

However, criminologist Shahul Hamid is of the view that he is playing for time by submitting an appeal in the Federal Court to adduce fresh evidence in his SRC International case, which has since been dismissed by a five-man panel.

“He is trying to buy time. The evidence in the SRC case is complete and is sufficient to prove that he is guilty,” Shahul opined.

A panel of five judges, led by chief justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, delivered the unanimous decision during the hearing in the Palace of Justice yesterday afternoon.

The 68-year-old politician made the application following the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) press release last November 19 on the recovery of fund assets of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) inter alia from Singapore, whereby the Singapore government had repatriated US$15.4 million (RM64.65 million) to Malaysia relating to an account of Cutting-Edge Industries Ltd owner Datuk Tawfiq Ayman.

Tawfiq is the husband of former Bank Negara Malaysia governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz.
