PETALING JAYA: Uncle Beng, the injured and homeless trishaw rider the Malaysian online community saved from a painful end with its donations has died.

Fiercely independent, he had a history of absconding from care homes for the elderly.

However, it now emerges that he spent the last months of his life in the Silver Jubilee Home for the Aged, reportedly relatively happily and without making any further breaks for freedom.

Uncle Beng came into the news in an FMT report in March 2020, when he was discovered, head wrapped in bandages, in his trishaw outside his favourite kopitiam, Lai Heng 88 Cafe near Komtar.

GEORGE TOWN: More than 200 customers are fuming a week after an error by CIMB Bank left them in “debt”, with deposits turned into debit balances, and their accounts frozen.

The disgruntled customers have lodged reports with the police and Bank Negara Malaysia and some have sought legal advice about filing a suit, according to a chat group of about 2,700 affected customers.

One customer, Nadia, from Alor Setar, said her current balance of RM9,035 in her savings account had been replaced with a debit balance of RM48,409 (shown in brackets, denoting a negative value).

Will PH come to Ismail’s rescue?
Posted by: superadmin - 02-01-2022, 10:46 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: mohd-puad-zarkashi-bernama-221118-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi says the current government will not collapse even if Perikatan Nasional (PN) pulls its support for it.

Noting how the slim support Barisan Nasional had in the Johor state assembly forced the coalition to call for the state elections, he said the situation was the same in the federal government, where Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has a “weak majority”.

“That is why the federal government should take the same steps as in Johor. If the rumours are true that Ismail was threatened, that doesn’t mean the current government will collapse,” he said.

“This government can still be saved with the support of PH (Pakatan Harapan) MPs.

PETALING JAYA: Election Commission (EC) chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh is hoping for Covid-19 restrictions to be eased at the upcoming Johor state elections.

Fears that public gatherings could lead to a spread of Covid-19 saw campaigning severely curtailed during the Melaka and Sarawak polls in November and December, respectively.

When asked in an interview with RTM about campaigning rules at the Johor elections, which must take place on or before March 23, Ghani said the SOPs were still being discussed with the health ministry and the National Security Council (MKN).

Disruptions in China can lead to ‘ripple-effects’ across global supply chain
Posted by: superadmin - 01-31-2022, 07:27 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

Disruptions in China can lead to ‘ripple-effects’ across global supply chain, says HSBC
  • China’s zero-Covid restrictions will impact global supply chain recovery as any small disruption in the country will likely lead to “ripple effects” across the world, according to the  head of shipping at HSBC.
  • The pandemic has revealed “how lean the supply chain has become. And there is little margin of error,” said Parash Jain, global head of shipping and ports equity research at HSBC.

China’s zero-Covid restrictions will impact global supply chain recovery as any small disruption in the country will likely lead to “ripple effects” across the world, according to the head of shipping at HSBC.

The pandemic has revealed “how lean the supply chain has become. And there is little margin of error,” said Parash Jain, global head of shipping and ports equity research at HSBC.

“The sheer importance of China when it comes to global trade means that any small disruption in China, will have a ripple effect across the supply chain,” Jain told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” on Monday.

The latest Covid variant is 1.5 times more contagious than omicron and already circulating in almost half of U.S. states
  • The omicron subvariant, known as BA.2, is 1.5 times more transmissible than the original omicron strain, according to Danish scientists.
  • The U.K. Health Security Agency on Friday said BA.2 has a “substantial” growth advantage over the original omicron, known as BA.1.
  • Nearly half of U.S. states have confirmed the presence of BA.2 with at least 127 known cases nationwide as of Friday.

There are already dozens of cases across almost half of the U.S. of a new Covid subvariant that’s even more contagious than the already highly transmissible omicron variant.

Nearly half of U.S. states have confirmed the presence of BA.2 with at least 127 known cases nationwide as of Friday, according to a global data base that tracks Covid variants. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in a statement Friday, said although BA.2 has increased in proportion to the original omicron strain in some countries, it is currently circulating at a low level in the U.S.

Huawei takes Sweden to court following 5G ban
Posted by: superadmin - 01-31-2022, 05:30 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

STOCKHOLM – Huawei said yesterday it has initiated arbitration proceedings against Sweden under the World Bank Group after the Nordic country banned the Chinese tech giant from rolling out its 5G products.

“The Swedish authorities’ decision to discriminate against Huawei and exclude it from the 5G roll-out has significantly harmed Huawei’s investment in Sweden, in breach of Sweden’s international obligations,” the Chinese company said in a statement to AFP.

The company had therefore “initiated arbitration proceedings” under the World Bank Group’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes “against the Kingdom of Sweden following a number of measures taken by the Swedish authorities targeting directly Huawei’s investments in Sweden and excluding Huawei from the roll-out of 5G network products and services in the country”, Huawei added.

Huawei did not specify what damages it was seeking, but according to public broadcaster SVT, the initial sum sought was 5.2 billion Swedish kroner (RM2.3 billion), but it could end up being much higher.

[Image: perikatan-nasional-bernama-310122-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: An Umno Youth wing has warned that the country is in the midst of “political destruction” and, if left unchecked, there will be serious consequences.

Federal Territories Umno Youth chief Nizham Abdullah Hamidi said the current heavy politicking is affecting the government adversely, especially in its decision-making process.

He called on the government to re-evaluate its position to ensure that all decisions are made in the public’s interest.

“The government is in a challenging situation due to fragmentation of political parties and this is affecting the government’s ability to make responsible decisions,” he said in a statement today.
