Xi calls on EU to form independent China policy, encourages bloc to take primary role for Ukraine resolution
Chinese President Xi Jinping, during a video meeting with EU leaders on Friday, offered four suggestions on how China and the EU can cooperate to help with the current Ukraine crisis, especially on supporting the EU play a primary role in promoting communication among the EU, the US and NATO and finding solutions to build an effective and sustainable EU security framework.
Observers said that China is offering pragmatic solutions to the EU while encouraging the EU to be diplomatically independent on the Ukraine crisis; and instead of pressuring China to join in sanctioning Russia and being kidnapped by the US, the EU should take control of its own destiny and take action for its security.

| Subsidy cuts: it was Dr Mahathir, not DAP, says Anwar |

KUALA LUMPUR – It was not DAP that pushed for slashing subsidies during the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration, as PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim suggested that the blame might lie with then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Anwar last night said the subsidy cuts targeted at farmers and fishermen had caused the Malay community to blame the decision on then finance minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
The subsidy cuts were not supported by Guan Eng, and when the matter was brought up to the prime minister, Dr Mahathir insisted that the subsidy mentality must go, he added.
“Dr Mahathir gave the same reply that we cannot go on with the subsidy mentality, as it will not bear good results and we disagreed strongly.”

PETALING JAYA: Malays are indebted to DAP mentor Lim Kit Siang for educating the masses on their rights in the country, says Anwar Ibrahim.
The opposition leader said Lim had spoken out not only about politics and the country but also on racial sensitivities and racial perceptions.
Lim was different from “certain Malay leaders” who had openly criticised the community, he said.
“Some called the Malays lazy, of depending on subsidies, of not being grateful and easily forgetting (about the government’s contributions to them). However, Lim said the opposite, that Malays do work hard and there are no lazy natives,” Anwar said in a tribute to the DAP veteran who has announced his retirement from active politics.
Acknowledging Lim’s contribution to Malaysian politics, Anwar said no amount of titles such as “Datukship, Tan Sri-ship and Tunship” could ever match his accomplishments.
“And as a Malaysian and as a Malay, we are indebted to you, Kit Siang, for educating the masses on their rights in this country,” he said.
Anwar praised Lim for his integrity and his will to remain consistent and never concede, and never having compromised on his values and principles.
“In politics, we need this integrity, courage and tenacity. Lim embodies these qualities. Malaysians will remain proud of you,” he said.
Lim, who is 81, announced last week that he was quitting politics and withdrawing from elections for a seat in the party’s central executive committee. However, he was later named DAP mentor by the central committee.

GEORGE TOWN: A Penang MCA leader expects the “silent majority” among the Chinese electorate to help Barisan Nasional (BN) recapture the state in the next general election, citing the recent “winds of change”.
State MCA secretary Yeoh Chin Kah said this was not just based on former prime minister Najib Razak’s visit here last week, but also on recent voting trends.

Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is on an eight-day visit to the US. Lee mentioned many times the solidarity and cooperation of the international community. He reminded Washington that if the US cuts off China, "the price is very high." He also emphasized that the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework should be built "on a win-win basis," and "as a way to engage the region and not just on strategic or security and potentially hostile basis."
This is not the first time that Lee raised kind reminder to Washington. He has expressed similar views many times before, including describing the two superpowers, China and the US, as "conjoined twins," and warning that clash between the two powers would be a disaster for the world. In addition, Lee has many times expressed the attitude that Singapore cannot take sides.
Singapore is one of the US' closest partners in Southeast Asia, though not a formal treaty ally. Former US president Barack Obama once said Singapore is an anchor for the US presence in the region. At the same time, Singapore has significant influence in ASEAN. Therefore, Lee's remarks are sincere to Washington and representative and symbolic in ASEAN.

PETALING JAYA: Analysts see PAS risking its relationship with its coalition partners after its stand on the unilateral conversion of children and its proposal for the prime minister’s post to be reserved for Muslims.
Council of Professors fellow Jeniri Amir said the party was causing discomfort to its non-Muslim partners in Perikatan Nasional (PN), namely Gerakan, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR).
However, he said it was unclear how non-Muslim voters would react because nothing was certain yet about PAS’ political alignments for the 15th general election.
