PETALING JAYA: A former deputy minister has questioned the state of enforcement over drainage systems in Taman Sri Muda, the worst-hit area when a tropical depression brought massive flooding in five states.
At least 25 people died in the floods in Selangor, most of the deaths occurring in Taman Sri Muda in Shah Alam.
Former deputy housing and local government minister Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah, an architect by training, said the severity of the flooding would not have been as great “if things were done properly”.
He said: “Warnings have been issued many times, but nobody has taken them seriously.”
The residents association of Taman Sri Muda told FMT recently that their drainage systems had been swamped with water from nearby areas, amounting to three times what the drains were designed to handle.

A failed state - when ‘pontianak’ comes out to play |

Headhunter: Malaysiakini columnist Fa Abdul’s description of the abandoned school fits perfectly of a failed state. The usual story of a huge amount of rakyat money spent on a project which failed miserably due to endemic corruption and at the end of the day, no one is made accountable.
We read this almost on a daily basis with no end in sight. The perpetrators are still in power and fighting among themselves over the spoils, while agencies like the MACC are even getting into the act.
We can only wring our hands and keep paying tax for them to steal. And those convicted of being the most corrupted in history are still walking free and proudly displaying their arrogance and thumping their nose at us peasants. Nothing short of a people’s revolution will stop it.
BluePanther4725: This abandoned school of SK Danau Perdana in Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur, as mentioned by Fa is just one of the many failed government projects during the corrupted Umno/BN era.
Now Perikatan Nasional (PN) is continuing with the corruption legacy. Nobody will do anything about this abandoned school project funded by the rakyat's tax money as all the parties and cronies involved have received their huge payoff and are happily enjoying their rich, luxurious life. Only the people are left to suffer.
So, we ask ourselves, do we still want to vote for this kind of irresponsible government like PN/BN in the 15th general election? Do we want to repeat this mistake over and over and suffer the same consequences? We need to wake up from this nightmare.

Not enough for MACC advisory board members to distance themselves: Gomez |

KUALA LUMPUR – Political economist Terence Gomez has demanded to know why he was not informed about a purported decision reached by the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (LPPR) on the alleged impropriety of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner, if indeed the board had met and discussed the matter on November 24 last year.
Gomez, who resigned as a member of MACC’s consultative and corruption prevention panel over the alleged conflict of interest, called on the board members to confirm if the meeting, in which Tan Sri Azam Baki was supposedly exonerated took place, as claimed by LPPR chairman Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang.
Abu Zahar had claimed at a press conference on January 5 that the board was satisfied with the explanation given by Azam on the issue of his procurement of shares.
However, in a joint statement yesterday, six members of the board denied having expressed such an opinion, saying that Abu Zahar’s comments were his own “personal view”.

Protect whistleblower Lalitha under the spirit of the law, says MP |

PETALING JAYA: The use of legal action against whistleblower Lalitha Kunaratnam, who wrote articles linking the anti-corruption chief to share purchases, would be a mockery of the whistleblower protection law, an MP said today.
Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh said Lalitha deserved protection under the spirit of the law, although Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Azam Baki could argue that she is not entitled to protection as she did not report her grievance to the relevant enforcement agency.

‘Weird’ of ex-PM to use ‘cyber-gangsterism’ to divert attention: tycoon Lee Kim Yew claps back at Najib
KUALA LUMPUR – Tycoon Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew finally broke his silence after he was repeatedly mentioned by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak since late December.
Lee became a favourite topic after describing Najib as “a convicted criminal awaiting outcome of an appeal” when the former prime minister became the keynote speaker at the World Chinese Economic Forum (WCEF).
In an elaborate and snarky Facebook post today, the tycoon lambasted Najib for stooping to acts of “cyber-gangsterism” and using social media to divert attention from the 1MDB scandal and other court cases, where Najib was labelled a “national embarrassment” by the Court of Appeal.

M’sia set to become worst country in the world, unless… |

KANGAR – Malaysia is on track to become the worst country in the world unless its custodians change how they conduct themselves in leading the nation, said former Perlis menteri besar Tan Sri Dr Abdul Hamid Pawanteh.
He said the ills – from healthcare, to the economy and politics – afflicting the country will worsen unless a determined sense of change takes place soon.
He blamed it on the education system, which has failed to produce the right type of leaders for the new age of globalisation and emergence of great threats, such as Covid-19.
“My anger, bitterness and remorse are sincere. Our education system has failed, and we do not have the right quality of leaders to take us forward,” he told The Vibes.
Hamid, 77, who also served as Dewan Negara president, said the poor education system has led to the shortcut adoption of abusing race, religion and sovereignty to “pursue evil than for the greater good of fellow Malaysians”.
The main culprit is Umno, as the party has betrayed its own cause, he added.
“I grew up detached from the royalty as they are not the working class. But now, it has come full circle – the royalty represents a glimmer of hope to arrest this steep descent into the annals of a disjointed country.” – The Vibes, August 5, 2021

PETALING JAYA: Bersih has called for Abu Zahar Ujang to resign as chairman of the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (ACAB) if he fails to explain his decision to single-handedly clear top graft buster Azam Baki over his corporate shares ownership issue.
This follows the revelation earlier today by six members of ACAB, an advisory panel in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), that Abu Zahar’s comments at a press conference last Wednesday were entirely his personal view on the MACC chief commissioner.
Bersih chairman Thomas Fann demanded Abu Zahar’s resignation saying that he had misrepresented the recommendations of the board members.

Umno bearing brunt of people’s fury, says Khaled |

PETALING JAYA: Umno is looking for “a way out” from the dilemma facing Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob who is under pressure due to the lacklustre performance of some of his ministers, says party vice-president Khaled Nordin.
He said that he sympathised with Ismail because of the poor performance of his ministers as this will inevitably reflect on Umno which is leading the government.
Khaled added that Umno was bearing the brunt of the people’s anger over the failings of the government.
“It is public knowledge that he inherited several failed ministers from the previous Perikatan Nasional-led (PN) government.
“But who else can he pick to replace them? He did not have much choice from the existing MPs.

RCEP welcomes rising deals in first week as firms delighted with cost benefits |

A wave of initial deals swept across China's exporting provinces in the first week of implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) pact, as companies across China are thrilled at the tangible RCEP benefits.
Some believe the boost delivered by the recently implemented mega trade deal is similar to that of WTO accession, with some even announcing plans to shift their market focus to fully tap into the opportunity.
Statistical projections by a top Chinese think tank that the deal is expected to lift regional exports by 18.3 percent by 2035 match the experience of businesses, with some exporters and importers providing a detailed account of how the deal has helped them save money, and perhaps more importantly, time.
In some circles, "certificate of origin" has become a buzzword for trading company executives, trade officials and industry players across China, from coastal ports to inland provinces. Some were even planning a shift in their business focus to fully target benefits brought about by the RCEP.

PETALING JAYA: Six Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)’s advisory board members have distanced themselves from the chairman’s decision to clear chief commissioner Azam Baki of any wrongdoing on the corporate share ownership issue.
They said MACC’s Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (ACAB) chairman Abu Zahar Ujang’s comments were entirely his personal view.
“We categorically wish to state that the board members at the meeting or at any time thereafter did not express such opinion as Abu Zahar attributed to,” they said in a statement.
According to them, prior to the press conference on Wednesday, they had a separate discussion with Abu Zahar and proposed the matter to be further referred to an independent committee, the Parliamentary Special Committee on Corruption, or the MACC’s Complaints Panel.
However, they said their views and proposals were not raised by Abu Zahar at the press conference.
“The ACAB has no investigation power as it is established only as an Advisory Board.
