PETALING JAYA: The dismal performance of Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Pejuang party at Saturday’s Johor elections indicate that his criticisms of his successor Najib Razak lack any bite, says an analyst.
Mahathir, who is the Pejuang chairman, had launched scathing attacks on Najib in a series of letters to Johor voters ahead of the elections. He had warned voters that his successor as prime minister was intent on regaining power in a bid to escape punishment for his role in the 1MDB scandal. In one letter,
Mahathir called Najib a “disgrace to his country, race and religion”

Johor polls: DAP to continue fight against unfair policies concerning livelihoods, says Guan Eng

KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 — DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng in the aftermath of the Johor state election said that the party will continue to fight against policies concerning the livelihoods of the people.
The Bagan MP said that the party will ensure that they will serve their best in the 10 seats that they bagged yesterday.
“DAP accepts the verdict of the people and congratulates the victors. DAP hopes that promises made will be fulfilled. DAP and Pakatan Harapan (PH) will continue to defend the people’s livelihood by fighting rising prices, rejecting taxes of foreign-sourced income and opposing the excessive increase in compound fines for Covid-19 SOPs violations to RM10,000 for individuals and RM1 million for companies.
“For those 10 seats DAP has won, DAP will ensure that our elected representatives serve the people to the best of their ability to fulfil the trust given by the rakyat. For the four seats DAP lost, we will conduct a post-mortem,” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 — A day after the Johor state elections, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu called on the Opposition to take its loss at the polls as a lesson that it needs to reunite in preparation for the 15th general elections (GE15).
In a statement today, the Kota Raja MP — better known as Mat Sabu — listed the Opposition’s disunity as one the main reasons for Barisan Nasional’s (BN) win yesterday.
“To me, this result shows that BN did not increase in strength, instead they benefited from a clear split in the Opposition,” he said.
He also pointed out that taking into account all votes cast, non-BN parties had won over 200,000 more than BN.

JOHOR BARU, March 13 — Parti Warisan (Warisan) will restructure its strategy in preparation for the 15th General Election (GE15), according to its president, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
He said that the results of the Johor state election were not as expected, but now was not the time to give up.
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Barisan Nasional (BN) on their victory in the Johor state election. Most importantly, I thank everyone who campaigned tirelessly for Warisan.
“Sincerely, I really appreciate all your hard work and continued efforts. I would also like to thank the people of Johor for accepting our presence in the state,” he said in a statement today.

PETALING JAYA: The decision to call for the next general election (GE15) will only be made by Barisan Nasional and not a small group of people who are “screaming” for it to be held immediately, says Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He also said a decision would be made when BN was “fully prepared” and the government would not rush it since it needed to take into account various opinions before it could call for the dissolution of Parliament.
“We will make a decision after the matter has been discussed within the party (BN). We can’t decide (to hold it) just because there is a small group of people ‘screaming’ for it.
“The decision has to be discussed seriously since the general election is a huge matter. There are other things that need to be looked into as well, and there are procedures,” Astro Awani quoted him as saying to the press after attending an event in Bera, Pahang, today.

| Relying on sanctions to stop Russia could go ‘terribly wrong,’ says Niall Ferguson |

- The Russians have sustained more casualties than expected, but are still “advancing steadily,” said Niall Ferguson of the Hoover Institution.
- “The assumption that this is going to drag out, that the United States can sit back and watch the economic sanctions do their work may be gravely mistaken,” Ferguson said.
- Sanctions may be able to change Putin’s behavior down the road, but cannot be used to stop the violence, said Anna Ohanyan of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Quote:Peace is “urgently needed” to avoid continued bloodshed and the destruction of Ukraine, which Ferguson said seems to be the Russian plan for now.
“The goal was to prevent Ukraine being a successful democracy oriented towards the West, whether in NATO or the EU,” he said. “You can achieve that just by destroying Ukraine’s infrastructure and turning it into a smoking pile of rubble and unfortunately, every passing day allows President Putin to do more of that,” he said.
Ohanyan agreed that there has to be a diplomatic push to de-escalate, start a cease-fire and negotiate on “bigger issues.”
The strategy of sitting back and waiting for Russia’s war machine to grind to a halt because of sanctions could go “terribly wrong,” according to Niall Ferguson, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.
“It’s a highly risky strategy,” he said.
The Ukrainian resistance cannot hold the fort for much longer, and sanctions by the West won’t be able to stop Russia in time, he told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” on Friday.
He said the U.S. is relying heavily on sanctions and “very belated arms deliveries” to Ukraine, but he’s concerned that those fighting for Ukraine won’t be able to defend the country for long.
Though the Russians have sustained more casualties than expected, they are still “advancing steadily,” he said.
“The assumption that this is going to drag out, that the United States can sit back and watch the economic sanctions do their work may be gravely mistaken,” Ferguson said.

KUALA LUMPUR – As the dust of the Johor election settles, some 85 hopefuls who failed to garner the minimum number of votes will see their election deposits forfeited amounting to almost half a million ringgit.
Each candidate who failed to obtain at least 1/8 or 12.5% of the total number of votes will see their RM5,000 candidacy deposits absorbed by the Election Commission.
Pejuang loses RM210,000 in forfeited deposits
In the case of Parti Pejuang, all 42 of its candidates fielded at the election failed to obtain the minimum number of votes and will have their deposits amounting to RM210,000 forfeited.
This includes their current Sri Gading MP Datuk Sharuddin Md Salleh who lost in the race for the Panti seat to Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Hahasrin Hashim.
Hahasrin won the seat with 12,599 votes with a majority of 5,854 votes. Sharuddin only managed 334 votes. The constituency has 38,408 registered voters.
Another unwanted record set by Pejuang at the recent polls was how one of the candidates received the lowest number of votes across all 56 seats.
Their Bukit Naning candidate Datuk Ibrahim Shafee only managed a measly 86 votes in a constituency of 22,594 voters.
The seat went to BN’s Datuk Mohd Fuad who received 5,437 votes.

WITH another state election done and dusted, those left licking their wounds need to come to terms with the message the electorate is saying.
Barisan Nasional’s (BN) thumping victory in Johor yesterday, which gave it a supermajority of 40 out of 56 seats, cannot be merely dismissed to low voter turnout.
A turnout of 54.92% is significant considering the electoral role has increased to 2.597 million voters including 749,000 newly registered ones.
Comparatively, in 2018 there were 1.8 million registered voters.
That Muda, the youth party, could only muster one win out of seven seats is a reality check that youth will not merely vote for the young.
In contrast, Pejuang, led by 96-year old Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, lost all 42 seats it contested, and this could also be a writing on the wall that the electorate is as fatigued as the twice-appointed prime minister.

PETALING JAYA: In the wake of Barisan Nasional’s decisive victory in Johor last night, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is an Umno vice-president, is expected to have great difficulty in resisting party pressure for an early general election.
He must be very careful about how he frames a delay in calling for a general election, should he choose to do so, according to political analysts.
Both Ismail’s superiors in Umno, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his deputy Mohamad Hasan, have been vocal proponents of calling for early national elections, as have many grassroots supporters.
However, those aligned to Ismail have resisted these calls, citing a need for political stability and the risks associated with holding a general election during the pandemic.
