New political party a proxy to split votes, say analysts |

PETALING JAYA: A new political party linked to a top political leader is likely to be a proxy aimed at putting the opposition at a disadvantage by splitting election votes, say political analysts.
Universiti Malaya socio-political analyst Awang Azman Pawi said the new party “is seen as a proxy to certain figures in power to split the votes of the opposition or pro-opposition independent candidates”.
He said he knew of the people behind the new party but declined to reveal more. He said the party will find it a challenge to compete with the likes of Muda and Pejuang, let alone Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional or Perikatan Nasional.
News of the new party was reported recently by the Malaysian Insight which said the party would be headed by a close relative of a top leader, who used to be a student activist. Several independent lawmakers are expected to join the party, which will not be part of Pakatan Harapan.
Awang Azman said: “I believe this party will be more BN and PN friendly though not necessarily supportive of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and those aligned to him.”

PAS to back incumbents where Umno, Bersatu clash |

PETALING JAYA: PAS will back the incumbent in seats where their allies Umno and Bersatu clash in the next general election.
According to a Utusan Malaysia report, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the party would use this “formula” to guide its 2.2 million members in GE15.
PAS is an ally of both Umno and Bersatu, but the two Malay parties have been at odds and appear to be on the war path. PAS is part of the Bersatu-led Perikatan Nasional but it is also part of the Muafakat Nasional alliance with Umno.
Umno has resolved against working with Bersatu in its annual general meeting, and over the weekend, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said his party was ready to take on Umno if it still refused to work with them.
Tuan Ibrahim said PAS’ stand was that the three parties should maintain their seats.

PH home ministry resisted citizenship efforts, says activist |

PETALING JAYA: Citizenship reform efforts in the time of the Pakatan Harapan government were stymied by the home ministry at the time, a women’s rights activist said today.
The activist, Ivy Josiah, defended the PH-led minister for women, family and community development against criticism for an apparent lack of effort to ensure citizenship for foreign-born children of Malaysian women.
Josiah said she had been involved in an equal citizenship campaign in 2019 and the women’s ministry was very supportive and they had meetings with the minister, then Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and her deputy Hannah Yeoh.
She said there appeared to be a pattern where the women’s ministry is committed to gender equality whereas the home ministry was always resisting. This was also the case with the current government led by Ismail Sabri Yaakob, she said.

China has adopted a right path since the COVID-19 outbreak, criticizing the politicization of origins tracing: top expert Zhong Nanshan
![[Image: ccd7f351-f5cc-4e3b-89a8-f8855ae6c85a.jpeg]](https://www.globaltimes.cn/Portals/0/attachment/2020/2020-09-05/ccd7f351-f5cc-4e3b-89a8-f8855ae6c85a.jpeg)
China’s top respiratory expert Zhong Nanshan said that China has adopted a right path since the COVID-19 outbreak by making an all-out effort to curb the spread of the virus, and prevention-centered strategy will continue to dominate while the specific policies may change when the effective vaccination rate is high enough.
Zhong made the remarks in a latest interview with Southern People Weekly that was reported on Sunday.
Zhong believed the criterion for China to generally relax border control is 80 to 85 percent overall vaccinated. He noted that after effective vaccination, most people would show no or mild symptoms if infected.
Vaccination also effectively drops fatality rate of the disease, which is 1-2 percent worldwide, dozens of times of flu. When fatality rate is low enough, absolute most people who get COVID-19 will recover rather than one or two in every hundred could die, Zhong said.

Exclusive: China's victory on Huawei Meng Wanzhou's case to curb use of US long-arm jurisdiction: ex-Alstom exec
China's victory on the incident of Huawei's Meng Wanzhou could help slow down the process during which the US uses its legal system to wage an economic war against specific companies and inspire more countries to stand up in counteracting the long-arm jurisdiction of the US, former Alstom executive Frederic Pierucci told the Global Times in an exclusive interview on Friday.
"It's clear that the US has been using it [such tactic] for quite a long time," Pierucci said during a video interview with the Global Times, as the country often targets companies' strategic sectors by applying US laws onto foreign companies in order to achieve their economic goals.
The story of Pierucci has been widely described as the French version of Huawei's recent incident. As a co-author of a book titled Le Piège Américain (The American Trap), the French businessman who used to work at the French energy and transport giant Alstom, told a story about how the US uses its long-arm jurisdiction as a weapon to strike down competitors.

PETALING JAYA: A government agency boss has come under fire from shipping associations for disparaging remarks about transport minister Wee Ka Siong on the cabotage issue.
The statement from the six shipping associations comes after Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) chairman Rais Hussin referred to Wee as a “minister with an IQ of a cabbage”.
Rais, who has been critical of the government’s decision to revoke cabotage exemption for foreign vessels undertaking submarine cable repairs, also said Wee should not be talking about the matter.
Today, the Malaysia Shipowners’ Association (Masa), Ikhtisas Kelautan Malaysia (Ikmal), Sarawak and Sabah Shipowners’ Association (SSSA), Malaysia OSV Owners’ Association (Mosva), Association of Marine Industries of Malaysia (AMIM) and the Sarawak Association of Marine Industries (Samin) hit back at Rais.
In a joint statement, they condemned Rais’ remarks, saying personal insults were uncalled for.

KUALA LUMPUR: All public universities have been reminded to comply with the directive to reduce tuition fees by 20% for the first semester of the 2021/2022 session.
Higher education minister Noraini Ahmad stressed that this directive had already been issued to public universities.
“The move is in line with the ministry’s continued efforts in looking after the welfare of students, especially under the #KPTPrihatin initiative,” she said in a statement here today.
Noraini said there should be no increase in tuition fees at a time when the Covid-19 pandemic has adversely impacted the lives of the people.
Yesterday, the Universiti Malaya Students Union (KMUM) urged the university’s administration to explain its decision to increase tuition fees for certain courses for the 2021/22 session.
This was following a reported 10-60% hike in tuition fees, which the students union felt was too steep and unreasonable, especially in the current situation.

KUALA LUMPUR – Great Britain’s Olympic gold medallist Joseph Choong is a proud British citizen but is frequently asked if he would ever represent Malaysia because of his roots.
“It has always been a topic of conversation around family and friends,” Joseph said.
“But I never (seriously) considered it because I’ve been here (in the United Kingdom) my whole life.
“I was born and grew up here, (I’m) a British citizen.”
The 26-year-old hit the headlines after winning a gold medal for Great Britain at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in modern pentathlon.
“That’s not to say I don’t love my Malaysian part. I enjoy being able to experience the culture there. Obviously, my dad is a Malaysian, born and raised there.
“But I am British and I wouldn’t want to change that,” said Joseph during his Instagram live interview with local TV host Ben Ibrahim.

KUALA LUMPUR – It appears that all is not lost in the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, which went missing more than seven years ago in what is arguably the world’s biggest aviation mystery.
Recent reports suggest new developments taking place that can hopefully shed light on the fate of the aircraft, giving a glimmer of hope to next of kins longing for updates and closure.
Globally, MH370 “hunters” are carrying out their own dedicated searches after the authorities ended theirs in May 2018, a mission that cost tens of millions of ringgit and involved a number of countries.
Meanwhile, new technology capable of tracking historical data on radio signals bumping off aircraft fuselages is currently on trial, and hold the key in locating the plane.
UK daily The Times reported on Friday that the technology could help predict more accurately the final location of the plane before it vanished over the Indian Ocean, solving the seven-year search.
Its pioneers believe it may even be possible to chart MH370’s last minutes with increased precision to narrow down the search area.

KUALA LUMPUR: Cancer survivor, Amelia Tan, who has been battling the disease since she was 18, is starting on a new chapter in life after getting a postgraduate scholarship to study biological science in Japan.
Tan, 31, started a home-based business in 2009 after recovering from spinal metastasis that left her wheelchair-bound.
“I was diagnosed with fourth stage lymphoma at 18 with the cancer already spreading to my spine.
“I was bedridden throughout my cancer treatment and out of sheer boredom, started playing with my mum’s bead collection.
“This little pastime became an all-consuming passion and later on, when I learnt to sit up and transfer into a wheelchair on my own through intensive physiotherapy, I decided to sell my creations online,” Tan said in an interview.
At a time her self-confidence was low, she said the anonymity of an online business was appealing.
“Selling online meant that I could work at my own pace and most importantly, nobody could see me.
“Nobody could avoid buying from me because I am in a wheelchair, and nobody could buy simply because I am in a wheelchair,” said Tan, who is better known as Mei from the one-woman blogshop, Crafted By Mei.
