Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine antibodies disappear in many by 7 months, study suggests
Posted by: superadmin - 10-02-2021, 10:55 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

Six months after receiving the second dose of the two-shot vaccine from Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) and BioNTech SE, many recipients no longer have vaccine-induced antibodies that can immediately neutralize worrisome variants of the coronavirus, a new study suggests.

Researchers analyzed blood samples from 46 healthy, mostly young or middle-aged adults after receipt of the two doses and again six months after the second dose. "Our study shows vaccination with the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine induces high levels of neutralizing antibodies against the original vaccine strain, but these levels drop by nearly 10-fold by seven months" after the initial dose, Bali Pulendran of Stanford University and Mehul Suthar of Emory University said by email.

In roughly half of all subjects, neutralizing antibodies that can block infection against coronavirus variants such as Delta, Beta, and Mu were undetectable at six months after the second dose, their team reported on Thursday on bioRxiv ahead of peer review.

Neutralizing antibodies are not the immune system's only defense against the virus. Still, they "are critically important in protecting against SARS-CoV-2 infection," said Pulendran and Suthar. "These findings suggest that administering a booster dose at around 6 to 7 months following the initial immunization will likely enhance protection against SARS-CoV-2 and its variants."

Biden's top trade advisor will say China isn't complying with phase 1 deal reached
Posted by: superadmin - 10-02-2021, 10:38 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

Biden's top trade advisor will say China isn't complying with phase 1 deal reached under Trump, according to sources
  • President Biden's top trade official, Katherine Tai, will announce that China hasn't complied with the phase one trade deal, sources said.
  • Sources told CNBC that the USTR is evaluating potential actions against China for its non-compliance, including possible additional tariffs.
  • Tai's speech on Monday will mark the last three months of the deal, which was signed by Trump in 2019.

U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai will announce Monday that China is not complying with the so-called phase one trade deal reached under former President Donald Trump's administration, sources familiar with the matter told CNBC's Kayla Tausche.

Under the agreement, China was supposed to purchase an additional $200 billion in U.S. goods over a two-year period, but the nation has not lived up to that pledge, sources said.

The announcement will represent some of the the Biden administration's most forceful pushback against China. Tai will deliver remarks Monday on her review of China trade policy in Washington.

Bumi equity: don’t let affirmative action become reverse discrimination – Aliran
Posted by: superadmin - 10-02-2021, 10:18 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20210708-malaysia-flag-jalur_gemilang-bernama.jpg]

ALIRAN calls on the government to drop – instead of merely defer – its requirement for local logistics and freight forwarding firms to have 51% Bumiputera equity interest.

If the government enforces this requirement from 2023, it would be a gross injustice to the owners of these companies. They would have toiled over the years to build their firms, only to have their controlling interest in their firms snatched away from them and handed over to others on a silver platter.

Federation of Malaysian Freight Forwarders president Alvin Chua was reported to have said that 80% of the freight forwarding companies with Customs Department brokerage licences are already Bumiputera companies. If that is so, why the need to impose the 51% Bumiputera equity requirement on the remaining 20% of firms?

Such a forced transfer of ownership would send the wrong signal to Bumiputeras that they have an alternative to hard work, i.e. take a shortcut and piggyback on already successful companies.

Of course, it would be ideal if everyone could share in the nation’s prosperity. But compelling business owners from minority ethnic groups to cede their controlling interests to the majority ethnic community is not the way to go about it. Affirmative action should not regress into reverse discrimination: that would be an unjust and misguided strategy, which would fuel resentment and perhaps ethnic tension.

Who stands to gain from such blatant equity grabs? It is highly unlikely that the vast majority of cash-strapped or indebted lower-income Malays would benefit. Instead, it would be mainly the already wealthy, well-connected Bumiputera elite who have the financial resources to take up a 51% stake in these firms.

On PAS to uncomplicate things, too soon to shut door on Muafakat: Shahril
Posted by: superadmin - 10-02-2021, 10:07 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 27032021_-Shahril_Hamdan_-UMNO_General_A...e_pic.jpeg]

KUALA LUMPUR – It may be too soon to speculate or close the door on the Muafakat Nasional cooperation with PAS, said Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan.

He said there may still be hope for MN, and halting it may not be the best move.

Shahril acknowledged that PAS’ Perikatan Nasional membership complicates matters, and said it is up to the Islamist party to uncomplicate the politics of its alliance with Umno.

“Their (PAS) membership in PN complicates any negotiations, but I wouldn’t shut the door yet. In today’s politics, shutting the door entirely isn’t wise,” he told The Vibes.

“It’s also up to PAS to try and make things less complicated. We cannot dictate what other parties do, just as they can’t dictate our decisions.”

Meanwhile, PAS Syura Council member Datuk Mahfodz Mohamed is of the opinion that his party can mediate talks between Umno and Bersatu, given that it has ties to both.

Malaysia edge Indonesia, enter Sudirman Cup semis after 12 years
Posted by: superadmin - 10-02-2021, 09:50 AM - Forum: Badminton - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: What a joy it was for Malaysia as the young national badminton team checked into the semi-finals of 2021 Sudirman Cup at Vantaa, Finland, after 12 years.

It was hard-earned victory as Malaysia had endured a long battle that lasted almost six hours to subdue their arch-rivals, Indonesia, 3-2, and equalised their best performance in the mixed team championship, they did back in the 2009 edition in Guangzhou, China.

It was also Malaysia’s first success over Indonesia in Sudirman Cup after three encounters since losing in the first meeting in the group stage of the 1999 edition in Copenhagen, Denmark, which saw the neighbouring rivals thrashed the national team 4-1.

Fiery Tokyo Olympics men’s doubles bronze medallists, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, handed a promising start for Malaysia as they powered past world’s number one, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in the first game.

It’s final, Umno will not work with Bersatu in GE15
Posted by: superadmin - 10-02-2021, 09:22 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: ZAHID-HAMIDI-PELANCARAN-PAU-FMT-061219-5.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Umno’s decision not to work with Bersatu in the next general election is final, its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this evening.

His statement comes a day after Perikatan Nasional (PN) said it would be discussing seat allocations without involving Barisan Nasional (BN).

“It wasn’t just a decision by the Supreme Council, but also by the grassroots at the 2020 AGM,” Zahid said in a Facebook post.

Umno, he added, has also decided against forming an alliance with PN in the 15th general election. The PN coalition includes PAS and Gerakan.

Earlier today, Zahid said the party would defend the parliamentary and state seats it won in the last nationwide polls, a decision which he also said was unanimously decided by the Supreme Council last year.

Non-partisan group needed to reset Malaysia, says Musa
Posted by: superadmin - 10-01-2021, 08:22 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A non-partisan group needs to be set up to handle rules on asset declarations, political financing, the conduct of elections, faulty bureaucracy and corruption in the country, says former deputy prime minister Musa Hitam.

“To me, the only single way to tackle all these issues would be in one go.

“If all of us can get organised to group ourselves, in a non-partisan way and with full dedication, it can be done,” he said during a talk held by Bersih 2.0 on political party finance reform titled Political Finance Reform.

Political financing, he said, would only work if legislative shortcomings, weak oversight and weak bookkeeping were looked into.

He said with the ongoing political uncertainties and realignment of political players, “there is no better time than this for all non-partisan citizens to get together.”

Merck to seek emergency authorization for oral Covid treatment after ‘compelling results’ in trials
  • A phase 3 trial of Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics’ oral antiviral treatment molnupiravir showed it reduced the risk of hospitalization or death by around 50% in Covid-19 patients.
  • Merck plans to seek Emergency Use Authorization in the U.S. and submit marketing applications to other global drug regulators.
  • If authorized by regulatory bodies, molnupiravir could be the first oral antiviral medicine for Covid-19.

Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics plan to seek emergency authorization for their oral antiviral treatment for Covid-19, after the medicine showed “compelling results” in clinical trials.

The drug, molnupiravir, reduced the risk of hospitalization or death by around 50% for patients with mild or moderate cases of Covid-19, the companies announced on Friday. Molnupiravir is administered orally and works by inhibiting the replication of Covid-19 inside the body.

An interim analysis of a phase 3 study found that 7.3% of patients treated with molnupiravir were hospitalized within 29 days. Of the patients who received a placebo, 14.1% were hospitalized or died by day 29. No deaths were reported in patients who were given molnupiravir within the 29-day period, while 8 deaths were reported in placebo-treated patients.

All 775 trial participants had laboratory-confirmed symptomatic Covid-19 and were randomly allocated either molnupiravir or a placebo within five days of the start of their symptoms.

Every participant was unvaccinated and had at least one underlying factor that put them at greater risk of developing a more severe case of the virus. The most common risk factors included obesity, being over the age of 60, diabetes and heart disease.

French ex-officer's DNA ends 35-year murder hunt
Posted by: superadmin - 10-01-2021, 06:04 PM - Forum: International News - No Replies

For decades the crimes of a notorious serial killer have haunted the Paris crime squad.

But now a former military police officer is said to have confessed to being the murderer known as Le Grêlé - the pockmarked man - before his death.

Named locally as François Vérove, his DNA has been matched to several crime scenes linked to Le Grêlé.

His murders and rapes shocked Paris between 1986 and 1994 but until now were never solved.

Among the shocking crimes attributed to him was the murder of 11-year-old Cécile Bloch. She was reported missing after failing to show up to school in Paris in 1986.

"We won't ever know all the crimes Le Grêlé committed," said Didier Saban, a lawyer representing the families.

Vérove is linked to four murders and six rapes but Mr Saban said there were undoubtedly more, and his death had left many families without answers.

Killer's body found in rental flat

A picture of Le Grêlé has hung for decades on the walls of the criminal brigade of the Paris judicial police.
