Is it the sound of prominent conservatives and Trump allies openly rebuking former President Donald Trump? Are these the early murmurs of a conservative backlash against Trump? And is it possible a political lane is opening for another Republican presidential candidate in 2024? It's too soon to know, of course, and there's plenty of evidence that those who stand up against the vindictive Trump will end up crushed by either his bullying ways or by his loyal followers, with little support from the rest of the GOP. And yet, it is noteworthy that in the past few days we have heard from two major figures in the conservative camp telling Trump that he should stop whining about the election he lost and let the Republican Party focus on real issues, instead of his self-serving fantasies. The statements from Rupert Murdoch -- who controls a media empire that includes, among other properties, the shamelessly pro-Trump Fox News -- and from former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie -- an adviser who worked with the former president and helped him prepare for the presidential debates during the 2020 election -- may serve as a test for Republicans who understand just how harmful Trump's dominance of the GOP is, and how it could ultimately sink the party. It was startling when Murdoch, addressing his company at the annual shareholder meeting on Wednesday, said that the United States faces a number of major political decisions that conservatives will fail to shape unless Trump moves on. "The current American political debate is profound," he said, citing education, welfare and economic opportunity. "It is crucial that conservatives play an active, forceful role in that debate," he added, "but that will not happen if President Trump stays focused on the past." Murdoch is not alone in arguing that Trump is a threat to conservatives. Oh said the Melaka election was Muhyiddin’s “Waterloo moment”. However, it was still possible for him to recover from the worst of defeats. Muhyiddin will need to soldier on, as Barisan Nasional (BN) will be “back with a vengeance” now that they have scored a huge victory, he added. The coalition won 21 of 28 seats, Umno winning 18, MCA 2 and MIC 1. James Chin of the University of Tasmania’s Asia Institute attributed the party’s collapse to people losing faith in Anwar, being seen as the main person behind Pakatan Harapan “taking in the kataks (political frogs)”. He was referring to the decision by Anwar and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu to field two former Umno members, Idris Haron and Noor Azman Hassan. Chin described PKR”s loss of support as a very dangerous trend. “If the trend is repeated in the 15th general election which will be held next year, PKR will be wiped out,” he told FMT. Malaysian politics is much more personality-based than it should be and I’ve often been pegged as an Anwarista because I think we need a popular Malay-led multi-racial party and he was the only one in our history who delivered that. I was part of the crowds that came out to support Anwar Ibrahim on three occasions each a decade apart – in Reformasi in 1998 when it was in solidarity with his arrest and beating, in 2008 when he was the star performer as the opposition swept five states and he briefly threatened to take Putrajaya. In total, 95,157 votes were cast for BN candidates with the largest margin of victory coming in the Lendu seat where the party’s chief minister candidate Datuk Seri Sulaiman Ali won with 4,486 votes compared to Bersatu’s Major Abdullah Mahadi with 1,382 votes, a difference of 3,104 votes. Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh trumped Perikatan Nasional (PN) Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin with a thin majority of 364 votes in the hot seat of Tanjung Bidara. Ab Rauf garnered 3,559 votes, while Mas Ermieyati obtained 3,195 votes. Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Zainal Hassan only managed a mere 489 votes. BN component parties MCA contributed two seats (Machap Jaya and Kelebang) and MIC one seat (Gadek) to its total 21-seat tally.
