Senior citizens out in full force to cast votes in Melaka polls
Posted by: superadmin - 11-20-2021, 03:21 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – All eyes have been on Melaka over the past two weeks, despite a tranquilised campaign atmosphere.

Hard work by candidates and their supporters boiled down to the polls that opened at 8am today.

At noon, voter turnout was 36%, according to the Election Commission.

And it was not only candidates who stole the limelight at polling stations.

The election saw senior citizens coming out in full force to cast their votes.

Among them was 85-year-old Sedah Kassim, mother of Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh who is vying for the Tg Bidara seat. Sedah cast her vote at SK Jeram, reported The Vibes sister portal Getaran.

In SK Durian Tunggal, Che Ta Md Som, 89, and her 90-year-old husband Fajar Hasan were also seen casting their ballots.

The couple – who had been voting at elections even before independence – did not waste the opportunity to exercise their democratic right today, saying they do not fear Covid-19 as they are fully vaccinated.

AGC must explain appeal withdrawal in Ku Nan's graft case - Malaysian Bar
Posted by: superadmin - 11-19-2021, 09:26 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) must explain its decision to withdraw an appeal against former federal territories minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor's acquittal in a graft case.

In a statement, the Malaysian Bar said it was "perturbed by the AGC's purported decision to withdraw the appeal, taking into consideration the fact that the Court of Appeal’s decision was not unanimous".

"The attorney-general (AG) is the principal legal adviser to the government and is also the public prosecutor. The power granted by the Federal Constitution to institute any proceedings for an offence is exercisable at his discretion.

  C. China Zhangjiajie unveils 'world's first scenic spot metaverse R&D center,'

C. China Zhangjiajie unveils 'world's first scenic spot metaverse R&D center,' aims to create the world of Avatar

[Image: c462e8f9-c8fb-4856-a954-a911a36ad6bc.jpeg]

A famous Chinese sightseeing spot Zhangjiajie, where Hollywood blockbuster Avatar was shot, which unveiled what it claimed to be "the world's first scenic spot metaverse research and development (R&D) center" with aspirations to build the world of Avatar, has generated huge discussions in recent days on social media platforms about whether such an establishment is merely capitalizing on the hype and whether tourism authorities have the ability to actually make breakthroughs in one of the most cutting-edge areas of the tech sector.

Industry insiders said that the move by the tourist spot is very "bold" but still "within reasonable reach," as gaming, cultural and entertainment are poised to be the sectors which see the earliest metaverse applications - although talks of building a virtual social network, which leading tech companies like Facebook have been mulling out efforts, are still in their infancy.

Analysts also suggested that Zhangjiajie authorities work with tech teams and companies to speed up transforming their ideas into a reality. The controversy following the news also mirrors the buzz surrounding the concept of metaverse, where capital excitement has been overblown but all players are just in the early stage of building basic infrastructures to make a parallel virtual world a reality.

"We are not hyping concepts, but seriously want to do this," head of the digital transformation team of national forest park of Zhangjiajie, who declined to give his name, told the Global Times on Friday, in response to public doubts. "We have always wanted to make Zhangjiajie a scene where people could experience the Avatar film. It may not be possible at the current stage, but it can be done in the future."

Is Zuraida forming a new political party?
Posted by: superadmin - 11-19-2021, 08:12 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Is former PKR defector Zuraida Kamaruddin now quitting Bersatu to form a new political party?

Speculation is rife that the plantation industries and commodities minister and several MPs are forming a “new” political party which will be launched next month.

Earlier today, two other ex-PKR MPs also said they are in the midst of setting up a party called Parti Bangsa Malaysia.

A source told FMT that Zuraida’s political party will be using an existing political party from Sarawak, albeit with a new name.

“An independent MP has allowed the name of his party to be amended so that it is more appealing to all Malaysians.

Melaka polls – the 8 seats to watch
Posted by: superadmin - 11-19-2021, 08:07 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

AYER KEROH: The Melaka state election is less than 24 hours away and many observers believe it is still too close to call the results especially with uncertainties over voter turnout amid the pandemic.

While the biggest question will be which of the three coalitions – Barisan Nasional (BN), Pakatan Harapan (PH) or Perikatan Nasional (PN) – will win the 15 seats needed to take over the state government, many will also be looking at some hot, highly-anticipated contests.

FMT takes a look at eight key seats up for grabs as analysts Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, Universiti Malaya’s Awang Azman Pawi and former Universiti Teknologi Malaysia lecturer Azmi Hassan weigh in on the likely winners.

TANJUNG BIDARA

The 94% Malay-majority seat will see a three-way battle between BN, PH and PN. This is probably THE battle to watch as it involves two heavyweights – Melaka BN chief Ab Rauf Yusof and PN’s chief minister-designate Mas Ermieyati Samsudin. PH will be represented by Zainal Hassan of PKR. Tanjung Bidara is an Umno stronghold and in the last general election (GE14), BN won the seat with a majority of over 2,800 votes.

Analysts verdict:
Unanimously BN to win
LENDU
Caretaker chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali won the Lendu seat with a thin majority of just 627 votes in a three-way contest against Bersatu and PAS in GE14. This time around, Bersatu and PAS are united in PN and their candidate Abdullah Mahadi will look to wrest the seat from Sulaiman. He will, however, have to fend off another challenger in PH’s Mohamad Asri Ibrahim, who is likely to get the bulk of the over 20% non-Malay votes.

Analysts verdict:
Oh: 50-50 between BN and PH
Awang Azman: BN
Azmi: Too close to call

Umno, PAS duel over why Malacca collab talks broke down
Posted by: superadmin - 11-19-2021, 06:27 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

MALACCA POLLS | Further questions about Umno and PAS’ relationship have been raised as leaders engage in a public tiff over why their plan to collaborate in the Malacca state election fell through.

Earlier this week, PAS vice president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar lamented that a certain party chief’s “abang long” (big brother) attitude had derailed talks between Umno, PAS and Bersatu.

Umno supreme council member Ahmad Rahman Dahlan, who says he was part of the talks, has now refuted Samsuri’s version of events.

In a nine-minute video posted on his Facebook page last night, he said it was PAS and Bersatu who had “walked out” of their Oct 27 meeting with Umno.

We are Malaysians too – Vasanthi Ramachandran
Posted by: superadmin - 11-19-2021, 05:54 PM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

[Image: 20210203_-_Jalur_Gemilang_Malaysian_Flag...IMRAN6.jpg]

“THE Malay-dominated governments allowed other races to retain their identification with their countries of origin, their languages and cultures, their schools, their civil organisations…” – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad

I read the above “benevolent” quote by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, when I was about to write this piece on inequality, social, and economic injustice. How timely.

Right now, Malaysians have raging emotions over a sinking economy, impoverished electorate dragged into the politicians’ game, collateral political damage, and the most racial budget in the history of Malaysia – Budget 2022.

Non-Malays are being crushed to almost nothingness, in an inequitable distribution of 3% for the Chinese and Indian communities and 97% for Bumiputeras for the budget next year.

The official estimates are that the Bumiputera allocation is RM11.4 billion, while the non-Bumiputera communities get RM300 million, in a pyramid with the elite apex still being sustained by the marginalised bottom.

These precise and mathematically chilling numbers should be attached to the racial disparities that Dr Mahathir created and is still endorsing.

Why this vengeance for non-Malays, when Dr Mahathir himself is of Indian origin? Why is there a paranoia to deny his own origin and endorse himself as a “Bumiputera”?

His own inner conflict and denial of his ethnic identity as an Indian surfaces always to reinforce racism even more forcibly in a contemporary world where you cannot pin any label on people.

It is so peculiar that the prime minister who entrenched racial divides, redefined meritocracy, and enabled race-biased governance was yet able to entice us with change in the last election.

There is no doubt that Dr Mahathir is an extraordinarily brilliant man. He could have gone down in history as the saint who saved Malaysia in 2018.

Conversely, a ray of hope and support had come from an MP from Pasir Gudang, Hassan Abdul Karim, who expressed his disheartenment with the economic injustices of non-Malays in the racially skewed Budget 2022.

Zuraida fails in bid to strike PKR suit, ordered to fork out RM5,000 allocator fee
Posted by: superadmin - 11-19-2021, 05:47 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20211119-zuraida_kamaruddin-bernama.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Ampang MP Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin has failed to strike a suit filed by her former party PKR after the high court here ruled there are triable issues to be determined.

Additionally, Zuraida has been ordered to pay an allocator fee of RM5,000.

The decision made at the high court here today was presided over by judicial commissioner Datuk Sri Latifah Haji Mohd Tahar.

PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail filed the suit against Zuraida on September 28 last year to claim RM10 million for allegedly breaching a bond, which prevents the Ampang MP from leaving the party without paying a hefty compensation.

According to lawyer Muhammad Nizamuddin Hamid, who represents Zuraida, she had filed the application to strike the suit on January 29.

In rejecting Zuraida’s application, Latifah explained the plaintiff does indeed have cause of action and required the defendant to present evidence as to why she signed the bond in the first place.

“In order to deliver fair judgement, the court is of the opinion that it is unwise for the demands to be struck at this stage,” the ruling stated, adding that both parties are required to provide testimonies as to why the bond was implemented.

In the statement of claim made by the plaintiff, PKR claimed Zuraida agreed to pay the party a sum of RM10 million within seven days in the event of several possibilities after winning the election on the party’s ticket, which includes resigning from the party; joining other political parties; and becoming an independent elected representative.

The party claimed that on or around February 24, Zuraida, in a statement with 10 PKR MPs, announced her resignation from the party without stepping down as Ampang MP, and eventually formed a new bloc known as Perikatan Nasional.

PKR wants Zuraida to pay RM10 million in accordance with the terms of the bond, or, alternatively, RM12,049,459.20 under Section 71 of the Contracts Act 1950, with an interest of 5% on the amount to be determined by the court, as well as other costs and relief deemed fit by the court.– The Vibes, November 19, 2021

Indian votes in bag? MIC campaigners get shooed by irate Indian man
Posted by: superadmin - 11-19-2021, 02:59 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20211119_mic_indian_melaka_screen_grab_pic.JPG]

MELAKA – A video of an irate Indian man shooing away MIC members in Melaka has been making its rounds on social media after he was approached outside his house.

The shirtless man could be seen interrupting the campaigners when they tried to speak to a family from outside of their house.

“Get lost. Get lost. What have you done for the Indian community? You are only here when you need votes.

“Last time you said you didn’t win because of votes from Indian voters. So why are you here to beg for our votes? Just leave,” he said as he gestured for the campaigners to leave.

This is in stark contrast to Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) high tea programme in Little India here yesterday.
