GEORGE TOWN – A call has been made within Gerakan to rouse members to provide compelling arguments to the leadership on why the party should exit from the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.
Kelantan Gerakan leader Ong Khang Woon said that he knows who are behind proposals to split from the opposition coalition, saying that they mean well for the party, but Gerakan needs to tread carefully over the matter.

Letter to editor
THE outburst of Dusun Tua assemblyperson Edry Faizal Eddy Yusof (min pic left) against a Selangor state exco within the ruling coalition could not have happened overnight.
Unless this issue is addressed immediately by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the coalition runs into the risk of losing Selangor to the “Green Wave.”
This will be to the chagrin of urban supporters who vow that Islamist party PAS should not be allowed to rule the nation. Above all else, losing Selangor would not go down well with Anwar’s unity government which now has the support of UMNO.

PETALING JAYA: The government should ensure that it gets the best value in procurement projects in order to reduce its expenditure, says economic affairs minister Rafizi Ramli.
Rafizi said this could be a short-term approach to strengthening Putrajaya’s fiscal position in view of the national debt estimated at RM1.2 trillion.
“We can ensure that we optimise the delivery and cost efficiency of each government project as a way to save money and prevent leakages,” Harian Metro quoted him as saying.

Japan Speechless & Flabbergasted – Can’t Explain High Covid Deaths Despite High Vaccination Rate
Statistics show Japan has recorded 31.4 million cases and more than 62,000 deaths due to Covid-19. The figures don’t look too horribly bad compared with the United States that saw more than 100 million cases and more than 1 million deaths. However, the Coronavirus death rate has been on the uptrend in Japan. Even new cases are hitting the roof – despite high vaccination rate.
In December 2021, Japan was the proud nation that reported less than one Covid-19 death per day. It was the only nation in G-7 – the richest seven countries in the world – that remarkably had so few deaths since the pandemic started. The number of cases also plunged from more than 25,000 a day in August 2021 to fewer than 200 a day by December that year.
Even though more than 77% of the nation’s 126 million residents were fully inoculated by the end of 2021, analysts and researchers nevertheless could not explain why the cases and deaths suddenly receded so dramatically in late summer and early fall. It could be due to extremely high vaccination rate, where 92% of those 65 years and older having received two shots.

PUTRAJAYA – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told government officers that they can no longer live in a culture of contentment, seeing that the national debt including its liabilities has hit RM1.5 trillion.
The prime minister stressed that the government cannot look at things from a “business-as-usual” perspective and must be honest and transparent with the public about the national and global economic situation.
“My approach on economy is different from mine on politics. It must be based on numbers, data, and facts. We cannot lull the public’s minds without looking at reality. What is the reality?
“The reality is that the economic situation has not subsided. It is still gloomy, and this has ties to international and global development such as the Russia-Ukraine war and Covid-19 post pandemic. Even the International Monetary Fund keeps on revising the economy on a downward trend.

Taliban spokesman calls PAS’ Hadi ‘insightful’ religious scholar, diplomat
JOHOR BARU – The Taliban has praised PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang as both an “insightful” and “experienced” leader in the areas of diplomacy and Islamic academia.
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s (IEA) Chief of Political Office Muhammad Suhail Shaheen said Hadi expressed a desire to strengthen ties between Malaysia and his nation.
Quote:I found him (Hadi) an experienced and insightful religious scholar and diplomat who wants to have good and close relations with the IEA and the people of Afghanistan.
“I am looking forward to having such meetings with various high-profile personalities from Malaysia frequently,” Suhail told The Vibes when contacted.
His comments come in light of a meeting held in February last year between Suhail and Hadi – who was then the prime minister’s special envoy to the Middle East – in Doha, Qatar.
Following a tweet after the meeting, Suhail said Hadi promised that Malaysia would do what it can to assist Afghanistan and improve bilateral relations.

Revised unity budget to focus on SMEs, green and digital economy: Anwar |

PUTRAJAYA – The revised 2023 unity government budget will be focusing on small and medium enterprises (SME) as well as the green and digital economy, said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the pre-budget dialogue today.
The prime minister said these three sectors will be critical, particularly in light of the current global economic slowdown stemming from multiple factors, including the Russia-Ukraine war and Covid-19 post-pandemic.
“Sometimes we are disconnected from reality. Bankers and mega corporations focus on solutions for their industries but we must not forget our goal of developing the community and the country. That’s why I use the term ‘civil society’ because this is a sustainability issue.
“We must think for both, short and long term. The nation cannot be sustainable if there are leakages, robbing the land of its timber as has happened before. Sustainability cannot be defended if there is no clear commitment on climate change.
“Thus, we need a new clear policy to regenerate our green areas,” said Anwar. – The Vibes, January 17, 2023

Contest against PH at state polls, analyst tells MCA, MIC |

PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional members MCA and MIC should take on Pakatan Harapan in “friendly contests” at the coming state elections, according to political analyst Wong Chin Huat.
He said the two parties should not remain trapped in any electoral pact between BN and PH, which would make it unlikely that they would be allowed to field candidates in their traditionally-held seats.
“The conventional rule of coalition politics in Malaysia is that the incumbent parties defend their seats. This means that in the PH-run states, MCA and MIC will not be given any seats to contest,” he told FMT.

Politicians slammed for endorsing PLCs’ business deals |

PETALING JAYA: Politicians and government ministers have been urged to refrain from publicly endorsing business deals of public-listed companies (PLCs), especially via social media channels.
Such declarations of support for a particular company or product is potentially a conflict of interest, or in extreme circumstances, may be deemed as corruption.
Even more concerning is the presence of unscrupulous groups or individuals who take advantage of such pronouncements to run up the share prices of the PLCs concerned to make a quick “killing”, at the expense of unsuspecting investors.
“Politicians and ministers must be aware of the consequences of their statements on the share price of PLCs and its impact on the fair and orderly trading of the shares,” Minority Shareholders Watch Group (MSWG) CEO Devanesan Evanson told FMT Business.
