Kedah locals mount legal challenge against 4D ban |

Opposition party DAP is helping Kedah residents file for a judicial review against the state government’s move to stop renewing local council licences for gaming shops.
DAP's national legal bureau chairperson Ramkarpal Singh said they are seeking to quash the move on the basis it is “unreasonable” and usurps powers vested in the Federal Constitution.
“The decision of the Kedah state government to not renew such gaming licences is ultra vires the constitution as the power to issue such licences is exclusively within the jurisdiction of Parliament.
“The plaintiffs will further contend that the said decision of the Menteri Besar (Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor) is unreasonable and liable to be quashed by the High Court upon an application for judicial review,” he said in a statement.

COMMENT | When spoilt brats become a blight on Malaysia |

COMMENT | Some political brats are the blight of Malaysia. Many have a sense of entitlement, like the former "special adviser to tourism" Nedim Nazri, or the ambitious Nurulhidayah Zahid who said that the Bersih 4.0 protest was "stupid".
Or the "self-made" banker, Nazir Abdul Razak, who fell out with his convict brother Najib and claimed that he supported Pakatan Harapan at GE14, and yet had failed to make this support public.
Or Marina Mahathir, whom many Malaysians quietly wonder, "Whose side is she on? Her dad's? Ours? People who stand in the middle of the road will get run over."
You've heard the expression, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away".

COMMENT | Whoever wins, nothing will change for Malacca |

COMMENT | We should have learned many lessons over the last three years since the 14th general election (GE14) in 2018 and the Sabah snap polls in September last year.
A large portion of that time had Malaysians dealing with the threat of Covid-19 and a laggard economy. Worse, we had been subjected to an endless spell of a political pandemic.
Our politicians need only to turn around and look at the coffins being carried to the burial grounds and crematoriums and the people’s skimpy dinner tables to understand the hard times the dreadful virus and straggling economy had brought to the lives and livelihood of the rakyat.
Tomorrow it will be D-Day for Malacca and not surprisingly but most unfortunately, the politicians appear none the wiser.

MALACCA POLLS | Curtains on the 12-day campaign for the Malacca polls are set to come down at midnight and Malaccans will elect their new government tomorrow.
As the clock ticks, the three major coalitions contesting for seats in the state legislative assembly - BN, PN and Pakatan Harapan - are making a final push.
Perikatan Nasional, for example, took a page out of the opposition's playbook of making symbolic moves aimed at building hype in the face of a formidable BN machinery, announcing its Tanjung Bidara candidate Mas Ermieyati Samsudin as its chief ministerial candidate just two days before polling day.
If PN wins, that would make her the first female head of government in a state.

ALOR SETAR, Nov 18 — Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said today any party who wishes to file a judiciary review on the state government’s decision to no longer issue permits for gambling premises in the state is welcomed to do so.
He said they had the right to challenge the decision if they felt that it contravened any law under the Federal Constitution.
“They can challenge the decision if they feel closing down the premises contravened any law. In my opinion, the move taken is based on the laws of the country. Kelantan and Terengganu did the same thing and did not face any lawsuit at all.

PARLIAMENT | Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz has confirmed that the cabinet discussed the request from former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak for a piece of land and house worth RM100 million.
This came after Dr Mahathir Mohamad (Pejuang-Langkawi) questioned why Najib’s request for an RM100-million piece of land and house was not included in Budget 2022.
“The finance minister should explain every item in the budget but now I find that there is an item that is not mentioned in the budget.
“This is about the gift for the former prime minister Najib (above), who will be given a piece of land and house worth RM100 million because of his supposed contributions to the country.

‘Abah’ is our hope: Perikatan candidates banking on Muhyiddin’s aura for victory |

MELAKA – Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidates in the state election are apparently riding on Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s prominence and popularity in trying to capture the support of voters, with just two days left before voting.
In explaining the coalition’s decision to place Muhyiddin as its “poster boy” for the election, several candidates told The Vibes this is because the former prime minister (PM) is deemed to be widely regarded and accepted by the locals.
They said this gives them a fighting chance against Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH), which are two of the more likelier coalitions to form the state government here.
“He is our booster. We know since he became the PM (in March last year), Abah has brought an extraordinary landscape and phenomenon to the people,” said Bersatu’s Ayer Molek candidate Mohd Fadly Samin.

COMMENT | All week long I’ve been trying to keep cool as excerpts from Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s daughter’s book have been printed on this site.
But I could no longer hold my peace when reading the latest tripe in the form of – “Sheraton Move: The day Dr M resigned himself to betrayals”.
That appears to me to be another attempt by the Mahathir camp to rewrite history as if he was not at the heart of the machinations that brought down his own Pakatan Harapan federal government.
Maybe that’s why some people are still confused – because having been under one-party rule for so long, we are not a country that understands the finer points of political manoeuvres.
