Sanusi’s remarks linking Penang to 4D outlets may have irked Agong
Posted by: superadmin - 11-16-2021, 05:47 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

GEORGE TOWN – A veteran politician has echoed Penang Mufti Datuk Seri Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor’s criticism of Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor’s remarks linking Penang to 4D outlets.

Wan Salim had yesterday slammed Sanusi for bringing down Muslims in Penang by linking the state to gambling and immorality.

“Sanusi needs to be careful when he speaks in public, especially on matters related to Penang,” stressed Wan Salim.

Tan Sri Mohd Yussof Latiff, who heads the oldest Malay organisation in the country – the Penang Malay Association (Pemenang) said that Sanusi has hurt the feelings of Muslims in the state by telling those who want to patronise 4D lottery outlets to go to Penang.

“At the same time, he may have irked the Yang di-Pertuan Agong over his remarks that portrays Penang as a state that freely allows gambling because His Majesty is in charge of Islamic affairs in states that do not have Malay rulers,” Yussof told The Vibes.

'Healthy debate,' but no breakthroughs in Biden's critical talks with China's Xi
Posted by: superadmin - 11-16-2021, 03:34 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 106975931-1637040679407-gettyimages-1236...=740&h=416]

Washington (CNN)When Chinese President Xi Jinping beamed into the White House on Monday evening for a virtual summit with President Joe Biden, the two men needed no introduction.

"We've spent an awful lot of time talking to one another, and I hope we can have a candid conversation tonight as well," Biden said as the talks got underway, sitting at the head of the Roosevelt Room table as Xi's visage was broadcast on a pair of television screens.

From his seat in a cavernous room inside the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Xi was just as friendly.

"Although it's not as good as a face-to-face meeting," Xi said as the summit got underway, "I'm very happy to see my old friend."

It was an auspicious start to some of the most critical talks of Biden's presidency, given the deteriorating ties between Washington and Beijing and the reality, acknowledged by administration officials, that managing the US relationship with China will amount to Biden's most critical international objective.

The affable greetings eventually turned more serious as Biden raised concerns about human rights, Chinese aggression toward Taiwan and trade issues. Throughout, the leaders engaged in a "healthy debate," according to a senior administration official present for the discussions.

Officials said the three-and-a-half hour summit, which stretched longer than planned, allowed the two men ample opportunity to diverge from their prepared talking points. The tone remained "respectful and straightforward," the officials said.

Malaysia gets low D rating for corruption in defence sector
Posted by: superadmin - 11-16-2021, 02:50 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: littoral-combat-ships-LCS-bernama-050820-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia has scored low in an international index related to corruption in the defence sector.

Malaysia scored 45% and received a D rating in the Government Defence Integrity Index (GDI) for 2020, released by Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M).

The D rating indicates weak institutional resilience to graft.

The GDI assesses a country’s defence sector and how well those responsible are able to manage the risk of corruption across multiple areas of defence, TI-M said in a statement.

The areas of defence include policymaking and political affairs, finances, personnel management, military operations and procurement.

New Zealand scored the highest at 85% and Sudan scored the lowest at 5% in the GDI.

TI-M said the defence sector had long been held as the “opaquest” area of government activity, with its budget transparency being restricted. The sector only provides a general outline of how it manages public money.

Why China is still trying to achieve zero Covid
Posted by: superadmin - 11-15-2021, 08:39 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

Around the world people are getting used to post-lockdown life with vaccines doing the heavy lifting against Covid-19 as restrictions are eased. In China however, a hard elimination policy remains where the pandemic first began.

A person walks into a five-star hotel to ask briefly for directions and ends up in two weeks quarantine because a guest had some coronavirus contact. One crew member on a high-speed train has close contact with an infected person, and a trainload of passengers is sent to quarantine for mass testing. In Shanghai Disneyland, 33,863 visitors suddenly have to undergo mass testing because a visitor the day before got infected.

Welcome to life in the country which now feels like a perpetual, back-to-zero-Covid world.

China was the first country to impose restrictions to combat this pandemic and it will be one of the last to ease them.

When you speak to ordinary Chinese people in the street, you will find that many do not seem to mind the continued strict anti-virus measures as long as they are kept safe.

I asked one woman whether China should open faster and she said it would be best to wait until the pandemic is sorted out properly because safety is number one.

Xi's China is closing to the world. And it isn't just about borders
Posted by: superadmin - 11-15-2021, 08:05 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 211112195043-china-border-inspection-qin...er-169.jpg]

Hong Kong (CNN)It's been nearly two years since China shut its international borders as part of its efforts to keep Covid-19 out.

China tamed the initial outbreak in Wuhan by locking down the city of more than 10 million people, confining residents to their homes for weeks and suspending public transportation.

Since then, Beijing has adopted a zero-tolerance playbook to quell resurgences of the virus. Harnessing the reach and force of the authoritarian state and its surveillance power, it has imposed snap lockdowns, tracked close contacts, placed thousands into quarantine and tested millions.

Before anywhere else in the world, China's economy roared back to growth and life returned to something approaching normal — all within a bubble created to shield its 1.4 billion people from a raging pandemic that has wreaked havoc and claimed millions of lives across the globe.

The ruling Communist Party has seized on that success, touting it as evidence of the supposed superiority of its one-party system over Western democracies, especially the United States.

Gambling operators urged to start new businesses: Sanusi
Posted by: superadmin - 11-15-2021, 07:54 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20210807-muhammad_sanusi_md_nor_2-UPDA_fb.jpg]

ALOR STAR – Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has called on all owners of gambling premises who are not allowed to operate in the state to find other business alternatives to survive.

Sanusi said he also believes that not many people in the state will be affected or unemployed as a result of the decision to shutter gambling premises in Kedah.

“I don't see many people involved in gambling premises, compared to the damage done by them.

“Look for other businesses. During the pandemic, many people lost their jobs and did all kinds of businesses.

“We need to be creative,” he said at a press conference following the state assembly session today.

Journalists’ role is to ask tough questions, says think tank
Posted by: superadmin - 11-15-2021, 05:48 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The most important role of journalists is to ask tough and relevant questions and it is the duty of politicians to answer as honestly and clearly as possible, according to a think tank.

Emir Research CEO and president Rais Hussin said journalists play a role and function in holding politicians to account and complement the check-and-balance dynamics in the political system.

“This is why for politicians to be abrasive and disrespectful towards journalists is most uncalled for. In a multi-party democracy, politicians from all sides of the divide depend on journalists to highlight issues and cases on their behalf.

“They must, therefore, adapt to a culture and norm in which difficult and challenging questions posed by journalists are to be expected and, indeed, to be welcomed.

Posted by: superadmin - 11-15-2021, 05:45 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: Economic affairs minister Mustapa Mohamed has revealed that urban poverty is worse than rural poverty in the country.

“Urban poverty is 45% more than rural poverty in the country. There are more poor people in the cities than in rural areas,” he told the Dewan Rakyat today.

Mustapa, also known as Tok Pa, said the government would update the eKasih database to ensure that only those categorised as poor and hardcore poor were listed.

The move was in line with the government’s intention to eliminate hardcore poverty by 2025.

When are you going to declare Islamic state, Mukhriz asks Kedah govt
Posted by: superadmin - 11-15-2021, 05:42 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

ALOR SETAR: Mukhriz Mahathir (PH-Jitra) today sarcastically asked the Kedah government if it was planning to declare an Islamic state, following its announcement that it will not renew the business licences of four-digit lottery outlets.

The former menteri besar raised the question after a backbencher hailed the state government’s decision to effectively ban gaming oulets and to restrict alcohol sales

Mohd Azam Abdul Samad (PAS-Sungai Limau) had earlier said “any right-thinking Muslim” in the Kedah assembly would support such a move “as Allah had decreed it”.

He then recited a Quranic verse and asked Muslims in the assembly to rise in support of the ban.

All on the government benches rose from their seats, and were joined by two opposition assemblymen – Ismail Salleh (PH-Pengkalan Kundor) and Mohd Asmirul Anuar Aris (PH-Kubang Rotan). They are both from Amanah.

Get 4D ban in Kedah reversed, DAP tells non-Muslim ministers
Posted by: superadmin - 11-15-2021, 05:36 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: DAP has challenged ministers representing non-Muslim parties in the Cabinet to raise the continuing infringement of the basic rights of the community at its next meeting.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said parties such as MCA and MIC in the peninsula and others from Sabah and Sarawak should speak up against the Kedah government’s decision to stop the renewal of business licences for four-digit lottery outlets, which effectively was a ban.

He said they should get the ban revoked at the Cabinet meeting to prove that they can stop PAS from pushing for extremist policies that violate the rights of individuals.

“DAP agrees that there should be restrictions imposed such as prohibiting Muslims and addressing the social problems involved. But it should not infringe on the basic rights of others.

“This hasty decision by Kedah without any consultation with the stakeholders has not only ignored the cultural diversity, customary lifestyle and business practices that have gone on since Merdeka but it also affects those who have invested in legal gaming outlets,” he said in a statement today.
