George Town Festival has art you won't find anywhere else Posted by: superadmin - 11-21-2021, 07:35 PM - Forum: Travels - No Replies GEORGE TOWN – It has been 11 years since George Town Festival (GTF) was inaugurated and it is showing no signs of slowing down, despite the pandemic, with the launch of 2021’s Nine Days Eight Exhibitions and Nine Days Eight Shows yesterday. Speaking to reporters, GTF director, Jack Wong, said that despite the lockdown that thwarted their plans to have their hybrid show in July, they have risen above adversity to organise events that have and are attracting audiences from across Malaysia. He said that festivals in Penang, especially GTF, present something that cannot be duplicated anywhere else. “For Penang, the difference is our city itself is an art. We have the Unesco World Heritage title, beautiful heritage buildings with locations that are suitable for art events. “When we curate the festival, it is not about bringing in a performance or art exhibition to put them in a venue. We are matching the venue and the art together so they become a totally new product, an experience that audiences cannot get anywhere else. - More -   Wife of author of The Ugly Chinaman to halt book publication Posted by: superadmin - 11-21-2021, 07:30 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies Wife of author of The Ugly Chinaman to halt book publication to prevent content being misused by Taiwan secessionists The wife of Bo Yang, deceased writer born in the Chinese mainland and based in the island of Taiwan, announced that the publication of one of Bo Yang's books that criticizes bad habits of Chinese people in the 20th century was to be halted as some of its content might be used by secessionist forces to insult China. This has attracted attention on both sides of the Taiwan Straits.  Chang Shiang-Hua, Bo Yang's wife, refused to include a passage from The Ugly Chinaman and the Crisis of Chinese Culture into the teaching materials for middle school students in the island of Taiwan. Chang announced that she would no longer release the book after the current contract with publishers on both sides of the Taiwan Straits expires in 2024.  "Bo Yang once said: 'when China progresses, then we can stop reading this book,' meaning that when the Chinese people stop indulging in closed, conservative and unrealistic problems of the past and have new goals to pursue, this book should be scrapped," Chang told the Global Times in an exclusive interview where she shared her decision to stop publishing the book. She also mentioned she hopes publishers will stop publishing the book from now on. The Ugly Chinaman and the Crisis of Chinese Culture, published in Taiwan island in 1985, was the island's bestseller of the year. The book is a collection of dozens of essays by Bo Yang, mainly criticizing the deep-rooted bad habits of Chinese people in the 20th century. With an attitude described as "wishing iron could turn into steel at once," Bo Yang called various drawbacks of traditional culture "soy sauce jar culture," which aroused strong cultural shock in the Chinese world. Chang told the Global Times that at that time the book was directed at the Kuomintang (KMT) cadres in the island of Taiwan, noting that the interpretation of this book cannot be separated from its background and it is necessary to have the corresponding historical knowledge to understand the meaning expressed by Bo Yang. "Children who are just in their first year of junior high school between the ages of 10 and 12 have absorbed very little Chinese culture. But now, the education authority of Taiwan is trying to implant a subjective sense of [hating the mainland] in the youth first," Chang said.  She noted that the publisher did not negotiate with her on the exact essay to be used and she was concerned that under their deliberate title of "The Ugly Chinaman," young people in the island would easily misinterpret the concept of China. - More -   China’s installed capacity of renewable energy reaches one billion kilowatts: NEA Posted by: superadmin - 11-21-2021, 07:23 PM - Forum: Environment Protection News - No Replies The first Sino-foreign joint venture offshore wind power project in China started to generate electricity in east China's Jiangsu Province on Saturday. The joint venture constructed and operated by CNH Energy and French multinational utility company EDF has realized full capacity power generation with a total installed capacity of 500,000 kilowatts. After being put into operation, the annual power generation is expected to reach 1.39 billion kilowatt hours, which can meet the annual power demand of 2 million residents, equivalent to cutting the emissions of 441,900 tons of standard coal, 937,500 tons of carbon dioxide and 1,704 tons of sulfur dioxide. As of the end October, China's accumulative installed capacity for renewable energy reached one billion kilowatts, doubling that in the end of 2015, according to the National Energy Administration.  The share of renewable energy now accounts for 43.5 percent of the total installed capacity of power generation in China, up 10.2 percentage points over the end of 2015. Among renewable power sources, the installed capacity of hydropower, wind power, solar power and biomass power generation have reached 385 million kilowatts, 299 million kilowatts, 282 million kilowatts and 35.34 million kilowatts respectively, ranking first in the world. Global Times    DAP could’ve won 8 seats in Melaka with higher voter turnout: Guan Eng Posted by: superadmin - 11-21-2021, 07:11 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies SANDAKAN – Albeit losing four out of the eight seats contested in Melaka, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the party could have won them all if there was at least a 10% higher voter turnout in the state during polling day yesterday.   Lim said Pakatan Harapan (PH) got 35% – and Barisan Nasional (BN), 38% – of the popular vote, but this was not reflected in the election results as BN won 75% of the seats, leaving PH with less than 20%.  “This showed the impact of the low voter turnout this time, which has dropped by 20% (compared to the 2018 general election). If the voter turnout was 15%-20% higher, PH would have won more seats. He said Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Md Noor recently invited him for a discussion over the possibility of collaboration between GRS and PH – similar to the federal memorandum of understanding (MoU) between PH and the ruling Barisan Nasional-Perikatan Nasional government.  “If we (PH) can discuss with the federal government to amend the status of Sabah and Sarawak in the Federal Constitution in accordance with the Malaysia Agreement 1963, why can’t we discuss with the Sabah government about advancing the state?   “If we can help to push the agenda forward, I think we should be open to discussion,” he said at a press conference after the Sabah DAP ordinary convention in Hakka Hall here, today.  Lim said his meeting with Hajiji did not conclude with a finalised result, adding that the ball is now in GRS’ court on whether it wants to proceed with such a collaboration.  “We leave it to Sabah parties to finalise the discussion. It depends on the Sabah government if it wants to ensure not only stability, but the people taken care of even if they voted for the opposition. We want to see whether that will happen.” Lim explained that the perks of collaboration include advancing Sabah’s native customary rights and defending the freedom of religion.  “Those are the areas we can cooperate with, why not do it? I really don’t know what the objective is for the book that may soon be officially launched. However, the excerpts suggest that the narrative seem to exonerate Mahathir as a family man and a leader with vision but who was betrayed. I can understand Marina’s love for her father, Mahathir, and her family. Since her father is no more in power, maybe she decided to put a family touch on the difficulties that Mahathir underwent as the prime minister, the stress he had to put up with and the toll on his heart that eventuated in a surgery. Is Pakatan Harapan (PH) a spent force – having captured the state in 2018 with 15 seats but only managed five this time around? Are the people of Melaka voting along racial lines as Malay-based party Umno dominated this time around taking 18 seats, while its Barisan Nasional (BN) partners, MCA and MIC, took two seats and one seat respectively? Is DAP, which has been a formidable party in Melaka, losing its influence having managed to win only four of the eight seats it contested – all eight being incumbent constituencies? What does it mean for the future of Perikatan Nasional (PN), which managed to hang on by the skin of its teeth – winning just two of the 28 seats it contested? Why is PAS rejected by Melakans?
