Woman in dire straits after credit card swiped to buy RM13,000 in crypto

KUALA LUMPUR – A female operations manager with a Klang Valley-based information technology (IT) firm has been riddled with more than RM13,000 in debt for nearly a year, after an unknown party used her HSBC credit card to purchase cryptocurrencies.

Since December last year, Rachel (not her real name) has been going back and forth between banks, mediators, police, and a telecommunications company (telco) just so she can prove that she was not the person who made several transactions that led to her current predicament.

Speaking to The Vibes recently, the mother of two – who is in her 40s – said she has become increasingly frustrated over the lack of an amicable solution to her case, as she will likely have to pay back the sum owed to the bank even though she is an alleged victim of fraud.

According to a police report she filed at the Travers police station here on January 12, Rachel claimed a total of eight fraudulent transactions took place between December 13 and 16.

The first half of the transactions between December 13 and 14 were done in United States dollars, and amounted to the bulk of the debt at more than RM12,000, while the remaining were done in ringgit and amounted to several hundreds of ringgit each.

In total, she accrued RM13,074.32 in debt from her HSBC Mastercard. The bank, she said, could not reverse the transactions.

In the report, Rachel said she did not receive any one-time passwords (OTPs), nor any purchase confirmation messages that are usually sent to her mobile phone.

1MDB scandal series in the works by creatives behind House of Cards
Posted by: superadmin - 11-23-2021, 02:01 PM - Forum: TV Drama - No Replies

MASSIVE corruption, the fall of a government (however short-lived), and a fugitive businessman; the story surrounding the 1MDB scandal is plenty dramatic and lends itself to an intriguing retelling.

Hollywood seems to think so, as House Of Cards creator Beau Willimon is teaming up with Crazy Rich Asians’ co-financier SK Global to develop a television series based on Tom Wright and Bradley Hope’s international bestseller Billion Dollar Whale: The Man Who Fooled Wall Street, Hollywood, and the World.

Screenwriter David Henry Hwang, a three-time Pulitzer finalist and playwright, is writing and executive producing the project.

The book – and likely the series – focuses on the fugitive Jho Low, and his big-spending adventures on Wall Street and Hollywood. He operated in rarefied air in the intersection of politics, celebrity and international finance – with the alleged theft of billions of ringgit from the 1MDB investment fund.

Reportedly, the alleged amount stolen from 1MDB was estimated in September 2020 to be US$4.5 billion (RM18.8 billion) and a Malaysian government report listed 1MBD's outstanding debts to be at US$7.8 billion (RM32.7 billion).

He’s currently wanted by Malaysian authorities, as well as being investigated by law enforcement organisations in Singapore, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and the US. No one knows where he is, though it’s suspected that he might be somewhere in China, maybe Macau.

Pakatan needs new ‘captain’: Sabah DAP secretary tells Anwar
Posted by: superadmin - 11-23-2021, 12:05 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KOTA KINABALU – A DAP leader from Sabah has called for a leadership transition in Pakatan Harapan (PH) at the national level, saying that the coalition needs a new “captain” to help it rejuvenate before the 15th general election (GE15) due by September 2023.

Newly minted Sabah DAP secretary Phoong Jin Zhe, who is also state PH youth chief, said that the coalition is breaking apart from disagreements at present.

“I believe in two things. One, we (the opposition) should ultimately unite everyone to face the upcoming uphill battles in GE15,” he said.

“Secondly, I’m of the opinion that PH chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should seriously consider that PH undergoes a leadership transition – to enable new expectations, and meet the aspirations and new hopes from the people of Malaysia.

“This means we should have a new captain for the national opposition alliance,” Phoong told The Vibes.

Stop pussyfooting around anti-hopping law: PH, govt told
Posted by: superadmin - 11-23-2021, 12:01 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Former deputy speaker Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has called on the parties that signed the historic bipartisan memorandum of understanding (MoU) earlier this year to quit delaying the legislation of the proposed anti-party hopping law.

The Pengerang MP said this is because the MoU signed in September is not merely to ensure constituency funding allocations are fair between government and opposition lawmakers, but to pave the way for major constitutional amendments.

During a talk that was streamed on the Agenda Awani programme last night, Azalina said this law should be pushed by Parliament as a whole, but she is the one pushing for the changes through a private members’ bill.

“This actually should not be my job. It should be the job of those involved in that MoU, which is the leadership of PH (Pakatan Harapan) and the mixed (Perikatan Nasional and Barisan Nasional) government.

PH govt’s inconsistencies blamed for Melaka polls defeat
Posted by: superadmin - 11-23-2021, 11:23 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan’s perceived inconsistency in its 22 months in power has been seen to be a major reason for the opposition coalition’s election failures, including last week’s Melaka polls.

A DAP leader, who asked to be anonymous, said the inconsistency had caused long-term damage that would take years or even decades to reverse.

The inconsistencies included the controversy over the use of Jawi, replacing the Goods and Services Tax with the Sales and Services Tax, a disproportionate increase in the property gains tax and the controversy over the proposed High Speed Rail to Singapore.

Policy problems were compounded by the pompous attitude of coalition leaders and Cabinet ministers, the source added.

The trouncing that PH received at the Tanjung Piai by-election in 2019 demonstrated how badly PH had lost the confidence of voters, the source said.

BN has no need for PN reps in Melaka govt, says Tok Mat
Posted by: superadmin - 11-23-2021, 11:19 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The is no need to appoint the two Perikatan Nasional (PN) assemblymen as state excos in the Melaka government, Barisan Nasional (BN) deputy chairman Mohamad Hasan said today.

He added that this was especially with BN having obtained a two-thirds majority in the recent Melaka state election, Utusan Malaysia reported.

“If we didn’t contest together then why do we need to ‘eat together’, especially after we achieved this victory on our own?” he told reporters after attending an event in Seremban.

“If we were short of seats then it might be necessary but we have more than enough representatives among us to be appointed as state excos.

“For me there is no need. If this is brought up to the party leadership, I will question such a need because I am a senior leader of the party.

Maybe it’s time for the forever bridesmaid to walk away

The truth hurts. It always does. But it is far better to face the truth than to run away from it unless you firmly believe in the story of the emperor’s new clothes.

In a political era gone by, you were the face of the future. You were young then and you had a fresh face. The political ideology that you nourished, nurtured and expounded were in many ways, a breath of fresh air.

Your future back then could not look brighter. It looked like the course of your future was set in stone as more and more greatness was trusted upon you. I should know. I journeyed with you, caught up in the exuberance of an idealist. Four decades have come to pass since and you are still nowhere near to fulfilling your dream of one day taking the reins of this nation and claiming the ultimate prize, the premiership.

Nazri Aziz calls for anti-party hopping legislation
Posted by: superadmin - 11-22-2021, 07:22 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Labelling the recent Melaka polls as an election that should not have happened, Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz (Padang Rengas-BN) took the opportunity to call for an anti-party hopping legislation.

He told the Dewan Rakyat at the Budget 2022 committee stage that the state election was not welcomed by the people, given that the pandemic is ongoing and the government is attempting to push for economic recovery.

“But irresponsible politicians with selfish intentions started a move that saw the fall of the (state) government.

“The people hate politicians like this – they put their self-interests first, not the people’s interest.

“The political profession is one that is heavily criticised by the people.”
