According to private worker Salmi Said, the thick cloud of smoke could be seen from Sentul.

When politicians get rewarded for bad behaviour
Posted by: superadmin - 11-23-2021, 07:51 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

In most civilized countries, the stick is more effective than the carrot.

In Europe, Japan and South Korea, for example, corrupt politicians are swiftly brought to trial, fined and jailed. In China, they receive a bullet to the back of the head, and the family is billed for the cost of the bullet.

But why do we in Malaysia reward divisive, racist, and corrupt politicians? What message does this send to our children and the general population?

Children will grow up thinking that stealing is all right. Adults will lose faith in the justice system.

Najib Abdul Razak has been convicted of criminal deeds although he is appealing against the conviction.

He has been found guilty on seven counts of criminal breach of trust, money laundering and abuse of power involving RM42 million in funds from former 1MDB unit SRC International. The court sentenced him to 12 years in jail and fined him RM210 million.

However, he has been allowed to act like a free man and, after 18 months, there is still no decision on his appeal. In other countries, the corrupt would be immediately jailed once sentenced.

6 questions unanswered 5 years after Amri’s disappearance, says NGO
Posted by: superadmin - 11-23-2021, 07:07 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An NGO has called on the authorities to answer six crucial questions linked to the disappearance of Amri Che Mat five years ago.

Citizens Against Enforced Disappearances (CAGED) said an inquiry by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) noticed striking similarities in the case with the disappearance of Pastor Raymond Koh, highlighting that a gold Toyota Vios was common in both abductions.

It said the registration number of the car was obtained by a witness in Perlis, and police attempted but failed to conceal the owner’s name.

The questions asked by CAGED are:

  • Why did investigating officer (IO) Khor Yi Shuen in Amri’s case initially say that he did not know who owned the car despite a Road Transport Department (JPJ) search confirming the witness’ claim?
  • Why did the IO not show the witness a photo of the car owner so that he might be identified?
  • Why did the IO only reveal that former policeman Saiful Bahari Abdul Aziz was the owner of the car after being compelled to do so?
  • Why did the IO originally claim that he had no knowledge of Saiful’s employment?
  • Why did the IO later say Saiful was an “administrative assistant”, yet his supervisor at the Special Branch indicated after questioning that Saiful was a general handyman?
  • Why did the supervisor give Saiful an extra 54 days of leave, much more than what he was entitled to?

Will Putrajaya review ‘huge’ number of foreign missions abroad, asks MP
Posted by: superadmin - 11-23-2021, 07:01 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: An opposition MP today questioned whether Putrajaya intends to review the number of foreign missions it has worldwide, saying it was “relatively huge”, when compared to the country’s Asean neighbours.

Wong Hon Wai (PH-Bukit Bendera) said there were 111 foreign missions in 85 countries.

He said this was more than what Singapore and Thailand had, with the island republic having 47 offices in 31 countries. He did not provide the figures for Thailand.

“Are we going to look into a strategic realignment and maybe focus on key areas such as ones that involve our business or strategic partners?” he said when debating the foreign ministry’s 2022 Supply Bill allocation at the committee stage.

After Melaka defeat, Anwar hints he won’t quit as opposition chief
Posted by: superadmin - 11-23-2021, 06:57 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

BANGI: Anwar Ibrahim has played down calls for him to resign as the opposition leader following Pakatan Harapan’s loss at the Melaka polls.

The PKR president, however, said the buck stopped with him when it came to the issue of PH welcoming two former Umno assemblymen into its fold – attributed by some to have contributed to the coalition’s loss in Saturday’s elections.

PH only managed to win five of the 28 seats, leading to Pahang DAP secretary Lee Chin Chen calling for Anwar to step down.

Anwar, however, brushed it off as an “opinion”.

“It is just an opinion, but as I said before, in giving such views, we should not be seen as arrogant,” he told reporters here.

It’s back to just ‘Bersih’ and new logo for election watchdog
Posted by: superadmin - 11-23-2021, 06:54 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Election watchdog Bersih 2.0 has decided to rebrand itself back to “Bersih” and with a new logo.

Its chairman, Thomas Fann, said the civil society group has decided to omit the “2.0” from its name so as not to confuse the public with “Bersih” and “Bersih 2.0”.

Fann said Bersih was originally founded by a group of opposition politicians and civil society activists and it was decided that since many of the founding members were not elected representatives, it should be a civil society-led organisation. The transition was made in 2010 with the renaming of Bersih to Bersih 2.0.

“However, after 11 years, we are independent and free from political influence. The time has come for the group to drop the ‘2.0’ and just be known as Bersih,” he said in an event today to celebrate Bersih’s 15th anniversary.

In conjunction with the anniversary celebration, Bersih also unveiled its new logo.

Fann said the new logo, illustrated by artist Fahmi Reza, was to signify a lasting social change.

Al Gore 'was a man' about his election loss, unlike Trump, federal judge says
Posted by: superadmin - 11-23-2021, 03:29 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

(CNN)A federal judge took aim at former President Donald Trump on Monday for lying about voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election, saying that former Vice President Al Gore had a better standing to challenge the 2000 election results but that he was "a man" and walked away.

"Al Gore had a better case to argue than Mr. Trump, but he was a man about what happened to him," Senior District Judge Reggie Walton said of Gore's decision to end his presidential bid following weeks of legal battles. "He accepted it and walked away."

The comments from Walton came during a plea hearing for Capitol riot defendant Adam Johnson, who was photographed carrying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's lectern through the Capitol building. He pleaded guilty on Monday to a low-level charge of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds.

DAP MP sees silver lining in Melaka election defeat

DAP MP sees silver lining in Melaka election defeat, but says Pakatan needs new narrative for GE15

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23 ― After losing in the Melaka state election, DAP's Ong Kian Ming said that Pakatan Harapan (PH) needs to have a new narrative and move away from relying on its top leaders to bring in support for the coalition in order to win the coming 15th general election.

The Bangi MP said that the new narrative should feature a fresh line-up of experienced and young leaders from the coalition, a compelling vision for the country post Covid-19 that focuses on competency and capability, as well as be open to forming new alliances with parties such as Muda to attract younger voters.

“The recent Melaka state election results, where the Barisan Nasional (BN) won 21 out of 28 state seats (75 per cent), were a disappointing outcome to many PH supporters and even some neutral observers who does not want to see a return of a dominant BN / Umno in the Malaysian political landscape.

“There is still time, but this time needs to be spent well. Personal agendas need to be put aside in the interest of a larger and more compelling strategy and political narrative moving forward,” he said in a statement today.

To be with Perikatan or Muafakat? PAS veep says leadership will decide soon
Posted by: superadmin - 11-23-2021, 02:52 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 23 ― Seen as hedging its bets, PAS is expected to announce its decision soon on whether to remain in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition with Bersatu or stick with Umno under the Muafakat Nasional (MN) pact.

The Islamist party’s vice-president Idris Ahmad said announcement would be made by secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, Utusan Malaysia reported.

“Later, the secretary-general will issue a statement. Insya-Allah in the near future,” Idris was quoted saying, when asked to comment on PAS’ direction after the Melaka state election.

In the Saturday poll, PAS lost all eight seats out of 28 that it contested under the PN banner

Woman in dire straits after credit card swiped to buy RM13,000 in crypto
Posted by: superadmin - 11-23-2021, 02:07 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: american_express_amex_visa_mastercard_cr...ixabay.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – A female operations manager with a Klang Valley-based information technology (IT) firm has been riddled with more than RM13,000 in debt for nearly a year, after an unknown party used her HSBC credit card to purchase cryptocurrencies.

Since December last year, Rachel (not her real name) has been going back and forth between banks, mediators, police, and a telecommunications company (telco) just so she can prove that she was not the person who made several transactions that led to her current predicament.

Speaking to The Vibes recently, the mother of two – who is in her 40s – said she has become increasingly frustrated over the lack of an amicable solution to her case, as she will likely have to pay back the sum owed to the bank even though she is an alleged victim of fraud.

According to a police report she filed at the Travers police station here on January 12, Rachel claimed a total of eight fraudulent transactions took place between December 13 and 16.

The first half of the transactions between December 13 and 14 were done in United States dollars, and amounted to the bulk of the debt at more than RM12,000, while the remaining were done in ringgit and amounted to several hundreds of ringgit each.

In total, she accrued RM13,074.32 in debt from her HSBC Mastercard. The bank, she said, could not reverse the transactions.

In the report, Rachel said she did not receive any one-time passwords (OTPs), nor any purchase confirmation messages that are usually sent to her mobile phone.
