What has race got to do with being AG, asks Tommy
Posted by: superadmin - 11-26-2021, 01:49 PM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

GEORGE TOWN: Tommy Thomas says he was “surprised” that people did not want him as attorney-general just because he was a non-Malay.

He said he thought there would be enough support, particularly from the Pakatan Harapan side, as he was their “traveller AG”.

Thomas said a traveller AG was obliged to be aligned to the policies of the government he served.

Despite that, he said there was opposition, which he regrets. He said his job was a professional one that did not require him to be of a certain race.

“The country needs a legal adviser. Does it really matter what his race is?” he asked in an interview with former diplomat Dennis Ignatius on YouTube.

Billions will be lost if Penang South Reclamation project scrapped, says govt
Posted by: superadmin - 11-26-2021, 01:41 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: Penang-South-Reclamation-PSR-srs-consort...1021-1.jpg]

GEORGE TOWN: “Tens of billions” of ringgit in investments will be lost if the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project is cancelled, the state government said.

Executive councillor Zairil Khir Johari told the state assembly today that although the state would not suffer much financially if the project involving three artificial islands was scrapped, the prospects for Penang’s growth would be bleak.

Zairil said the PSR project was primed to be the home for high-tech industries and a springboard for future investments in the state.

He said the three islands would be raised by 3m to avoid rising sea levels, with drains to channel rainwater even if this increased by 30% as a result of climate change.

Hadi rejects Umno, says ‘muafakat’ is better with Perikatan
Posted by: superadmin - 11-26-2021, 01:35 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Despite not making a dent in the Melaka polls last Saturday, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang continues to sing the Perikatan Nasional (PN) tune, openly rejecting political ties with Umno.

He said his party rejects Muafakat Nasional (MN) that is “shackled” only by PAS and Umno, which sidelines Malaysia’s plural society, and that it is better represented by a bigger coalition such as PN.

“After the 2018 general election, we need a reform as Barisan Nasional (BN) is diseased. The change started with the formation of the incomplete Muafakat Nasional, which now needs to be made whole with PN.

“We also need to be rid of those who still hold fast to the mindsets of their ‘colonial masters’ as they are seen as ‘pests’ in Keluarga Malaysia,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.

He added that PAS will only accept an MN that is completed without conflicts with the larger unity agenda via PN.

Hadi also likened MN and PN to arms of the same body, and without one or the other, it will be left handicapped – similar to wearing only one shoe.

Sarawak PH parties to use own logos and contest all 82 seats
Posted by: superadmin - 11-25-2021, 08:19 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The coming Sarawak state elections will see the three Pakatan Harapan (PH) parties using their own party logos.

State PH chief Chong Chieng Jen said the coalition would follow the earlier seat allocation formula with PKR contesting 47 seats, DAP 26 and Amanah nine.

The seat arrangement remained the same as before, despite a change in leadership in the state PKR committee, he was quoted as saying in Borneo Post.

Chong, who is also Sarawak DAP chief, indicated there would be “fairly new” faces in the coming Dec 18 polls.

However, he declined to say if he would be defending his Kota Sentosa state seat. He did not give a breakdown of which seats would be contested by the PH parties.

He also expected rules for the state elections to be “unfair”, with curbs imposed on campaigning due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Protectionism doesn’t work, says MP on Bumi quota in malls
Posted by: superadmin - 11-25-2021, 05:36 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The government should learn from past mistakes and focus on capacity building and resilience for Bumiputera businesses instead of establishing quotas in malls and “strategic places”, an opposition MP said.

Bandar Kuching DAP MP Dr Kelvin Yii said protectionism would not work and core issues that led to the past failures must be examined and addressed to ensure shared prosperity for all.

He was responding to Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s announcement on proposed quotas for Bumiputera-owned companies in strategic places such as shopping malls to expand the community’s involvement in the economy.

Ismail said the proposal was in line with the concept of “Keluarga Malaysia”.

Yii said the New Economic Policy, developed in 1970, was meant to improve the economic involvement of Bumiputeras, and the policy was supposed to be updated.

“We should be learning from past mistakes, and if we realise it is not working, we must examine the core issues and address them properly to ensure shared prosperity for all Malaysians,” he said in a statement today.

Scientists warn of new Covid variant with high number of mutations
Posted by: superadmin - 11-25-2021, 03:53 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 6191.jpg?width=620&quality=85&auto=forma...cd70ed751c]

Scientists have said a new Covid variant that carries an “extremely high number” of mutations may drive further waves of disease by evading the body’s defences.

Only 10 cases in three countries have been confirmed by genomic sequencing, but the variant has sparked serious concern among some researchers because a number of the mutations may help the virus evade immunity.

The B.1.1.529 variant has 32 mutations in the spike protein, the part of the virus that most vaccines use to prime the immune system against Covid. Mutations in the spike protein can affect the virus’s ability to infect cells and spread, but also make it harder for immune cells to attack the pathogen.

The variant was first spotted in Botswana, where three cases have now been sequenced. Six more have been confirmed in South Africa, and one in Hong Kong in a traveller returning from South Africa.

Dr Tom Peacock, a virologist at Imperial College London, posted details of the new variant on a genome-sharing website, noting that the “incredibly high amount of spike mutations suggest this could be of real concern”.

In a series of tweets, Peacock said it “very, very much should be monitored due to that horrific spike profile”, but added that it may turn out to be an “odd cluster” that is not very transmissible. “I hope that’s the case,” he wrote.

PN ‘motivated’ by showing in Melaka polls, says Hamzah
Posted by: superadmin - 11-25-2021, 03:43 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: HAMZAH_ZAINUDIN_MINISTER_HOME_AFFAIRS_FM...2020-7.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR: The result of last week’s Melaka elections has given Perikatan Nasional (PN) “more motivation” after the coalition’s secretary-general, Hamzah Zainudin, noted the strong support it received from civil servants.

Barisan Nasional (BN) has formed the new state government after sweeping 21 of the 28 seats up for grabs and securing a two-thirds majority on Saturday, with Pakatan Harapan (PH) claiming five seats and PN just two.

However, Hamzah, who is also the home minister, said PN’s initial post-mortem with its component parties has given them some reason to celebrate.

“We found that there has been an increase in terms of support for PN, and that gives us more motivation,” he said today.

“There has been an increase in support from civil servants. This is because when I saw the early voting results, most of them were from civil servants.

Sweden’s first female prime minister resigns after less than 12 hours
Posted by: superadmin - 11-25-2021, 03:37 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 2021-09-29T125746Z_1507666650_RC2OZP9496...=770%2C513]

Sweden’s first female prime minister, the Social Democrat Magdalena Andersson, has resigned less than 12 hours into the job when her coalition collapsed, plunging the country into further political uncertainty.

Andersson said a decision by the Green party, the junior party in the coalition, to quit had forced her to resign. She added that she had told the speaker of parliament she hoped to be appointed prime minister again as the head of a single-party government.

The Green party said it would leave government after the coalition’s budget bill was rejected by parliament.

“I have asked the speaker to be relieved of my duties as prime minister,” Andersson told a news conference. “I am ready to be prime minister in a single-party, Social Democrat government.”
