How the Singapore Dream is inextricably linked to its HDB policies |

SINGAPORE – Housing in the land-scarce island republic is a hot button issue among its citizens as prices continue to skyrocket despite government intervention.
And mixed reactions were drawn in Malaysia when Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming revealed that there would be a knowledge-sharing session with experts from Singapore on affordable housing management.
This garnered some backlash from opposition party PAS, which alleged that Malays are being priced out of their hometowns.
Singapore’s ethnic integration policy in its public housing was once labelled as “the most intrusive social policy” in the republic, but the government has repeatedly defended it as an integral part of nurturing racial harmony.
National Development Minister Desmond Lee recently told a group of Malaysian journalists that the Housing and Development Board (HDB) goes beyond simple homeownership to shaping social policy, social aspirations and goals.

KUALA LUMPUR – Students in the country are free to express their views including criticising the government, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said this was to ensure that the group acquired critical thinking skills, in addition to creating a better learning atmosphere.
Anwar said he had conveyed the matter to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
“They have also opened up the space and opportunity, especially the Ministry of Higher Education, so that the university is more conducive in terms of allowing points of view to be expressed, with the exception of things that are insulting, racist in nature, or extreme religious beliefs.
“Apart from that, they are given the freedom to criticise the prime minister, the government,” he told reporters after attending the ceremony to hand over contributions to the AbuSulayman International Student Fund (AISF) at the International Islamic University of Malaysia (UIAM) here today. – Bernama, February 11, 2023

KUALA LUMPUR – Despite being viewed with cynicism, the unity government remains firm in its stance against abuse of power and corrupt practices, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Citing the government’s decision to stop the practice of hiring foreign workers using agents as an example, he said despite objections from a few stakeholders, measures to ensure that the workers involved are not abused will still continue.
He said the high cost imposed by agents affects the entry of foreign workers, when the country needs them in certain sectors, such as plantations and the food industry, including restaurants.
“We know that there are parties making high profits by imposing excessive additional costs, and by right, we should be seen as putting efforts to defend workers' rights and prevent any form of oppression, whether they are local workers or foreign workers.

KUALA LUMPUR – Over two-thirds of Malaysian voters have given 10th prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim a positive rating in a survey carried out during his second month in power following the 15th general election.
The survey carried out by the Merdeka Centre for Opinion Research concluded with Anwar’s approval rating standing at 68%, and only 20% of the voters reporting dissatisfaction with his performance as prime minister at that moment in time.
Some 54% voters reported as being satisfied at the performance of the new unity federal government, while 25% reported dissatisfaction.
“In our opinion, the survey results show a Malaysian electorate that is keen to put the instability that had mired the country’s politics in the past, and move on to provide room for the new leadership to prove themselves,” the pollster said in a statement today.
“While many accept the unity government, the public is also reserving their assessment on the new government.

Europe will engulf itself in war with offer of fighter jets to Ukraine: experts |

War is likely to engulf the whole of Europe if European countries provide fighter jets to Ukraine, Chinese experts warned, after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a surprise visit to the UK and France to push the case for fighter jets. Such a move will not only trigger a strong response from Russia, but will also drag more countries into the crisis and further escalate the situation, said experts.
In only his second overseas trip since the Russia-Ukraine crisis started nearly a year ago, Zelensky made visits to the UK and France on Wednesday. The Ukrainian president gave a speech to the joint houses of the British parliament in which he made a direct plea for more heavy weaponry, including fighter jets.
Zelensky thanked the British people for their support since "Day One" of the conflict, as Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said fighter jets were "part of the conversation" about aid to Ukraine.

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin has denied an allegation linked to a lucrative contract said to have been awarded to his son-in-law.
“I strongly deny this. This is a malicious lie created to smear my image and that of my family,” he said in a statement.
Muhyiddin said he was never involved in the awarding of the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) contract to IRIS Corporation Bhd, for which there had been an open tender.
He also said that the awarding of the contract was done in accordance with the government’s standard procedures and it was supervised by the finance ministry and other relevant ministries.
Muhyiddin said he had no say when it came to such matters.

A TEACHER has got what he deserved for having lured a Form Three school pupil in Kuala Lumpur to embrace Islam after claiming that doing so would boost his chances of becoming a national footballer.
Police have begun investigations into a report lodged against a teacher by the boy’s parents. On Feb 7 at 10.21am, the complainant, a Malaysian mother, reported the matter to the police, according to Cheras police chief Assistant Commissioner Zam Halim Jamaluddin.
The boy’s mother who identified herself as “Vasan” earlier claimed that the class teacher also told her 15-year-old son that “only Muslims are allowed to enter stadiums in Malaysia”.
The incident surfaced on Feb 3 when her son showed her the messages in a WhatsApp group created for the class by the teacher.
“When I looked through the messages, I noticed that the teacher told my son that if he wanted to join the national team, he had to be a Muslim. He then encouraged my son to convert and even asked the class to suggest Muslim names for him,” Malaysiakini cited her as telling a media conference in Petaling Jaya yesterday (Feb 8).
