Why IS the Omicron variant so scary?
Posted by: superadmin - 11-27-2021, 05:30 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

Super strain has evolved to have ALL of the worst mutations of Alpha, Beta and Delta combined plus new ones that could make it the most infectious and jab-resistant variant ever

  • British scientists warn new variant has twice as many mutations as Delta
  • Experts think it will slash protection from Covid vaccines by 40 per cent
  • Health Secretary Sajid Javid last night announced travel from six countries
[Image: 20211127001940.jpg]

The Botswana Covid variant, described by experts as the worst strain ever, has all the worrying mutations from previous versions of the virus, plus many more that could make it the most infectious and vaccine-resistant one so far.

The super strain has acquired the mutations of Delta, which made that variant so transmissible that it became world-dominant in months.

And the new variant also includes the vaccine-resistant alterations seen on Beta — another strain of concern that emerged in South Africa and was thought to be best at escaping the immune system until now.

It also contains a drop-out mutation that helped the Alpha variant take off in the UK last winter. In total, the new super strain has 32 mutations on its spike protein, more than any variant before it and twice as many as Delta.

It contains two unique alterations on a specific part of the spike which help viruses open the door to human cells.

All warning signs suggest it will become world-dominant in months but scientists have cautioned they have not confirmed any of the effects of the mutations in a laboratory.

South Africa’s population has very high levels of natural immunity and seems to be spreading with ease, which UK experts think may allow it to easily infect former Covid patients.
But there is no rise in hospitalisations in the region, which raises hopes it could be a milder Covid iteration.

Malaysia Open: Aifa continues fairy tale run into squash final, Eain Yow crashes out
Posted by: superadmin - 11-27-2021, 02:06 PM - Forum: Squash - No Replies

[Image: Malaysia_Open_(Squash)_-_Aifa_Azman_-_Be...112021.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Current national squash sensation Aifa Azman continued her fiery performance to cruise into the 2021 Malaysia Open final at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil here.

World number 69 Aifa pulled off another stunner to oust fifth seed and world number 19 Danielle Letourneau 11-4, 11-7, 5-11, 11-3 in the semi-finals yesterday ensure one home representative in the finals.

The wildcard entrant had a blazing start as she raced into a 2-0 lead before Letourneau pegged her back by taking the game, but Aifa was not shaken. She refocused and came back firing in the fourth to seal the win after 32 minutes.

The Kedahan will take on world number eight Salma Hany of Egypt for the title, as top seed Salma powered through with an 11-1, 11-8, 11-5 win over fourth seed Hollie Naughton of Canada.

The 19-year-old in earlier games scored upset wins against three Egyptians - world number 47 Mayar Hany, world number 31 Yathreb Adel and world number 35 Hana Ramadhan to check into the semi-finals.

  Umno to resist GRS registration?
Posted by: superadmin - 11-27-2021, 02:00 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KOTA KINABALU: Analysts expect the more established member parties of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to resist any attempt to get the coalition registered.

They say Umno, for example, would not want to be tied down to any pact other than Barisan Nasional, which it leads.

“When GRS is formalised, all the parties must obey the instructions of the coalition chairman,” said Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya (UM).

“This will put Umno at a disadvantage because its bargaining power will be lost. It will not want to be trapped like that,” he told FMT.

“Furthermore, Umno does not want to compromise on seats with Bersatu.”

National Council of Professors fellow Jeniri Amir said PBS would also have something to lose with the formalisation of GRS.

“The biggest hurdle would be in having to compromise in terms of seats,” he told FMT.

Bersatu to sit out Sarawak polls
Posted by: superadmin - 11-27-2021, 01:56 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Muhyiddin-Yassin-Johari-Openg-Bernama-010421.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu will not contest in the Sarawak state elections next month, its president Muhyiddin Yassin said today.

Muhyiddin, who is also chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN), said he made the decision after meeting with the head of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and chief minister Abang Johari Openg recently.

The former prime minister also revealed that Abang Johari was, however, open to the idea of GPS allowing friendly parties, including PN, to fight alongside the coalition in the 15th general election (GE15).

“Bersatu will not contest in Sarawak although we believe there are seats that we can win.

“This is to ensure that the existing parties in the state ruling coalition perform well.

“We respect the views of the GPS leadership, which is strong in Sarawak, and also as a partner in the federal government when I was the prime minister,” Muhyiddin told reporters after opening the third delegates meeting of the Pagoh Bersatu division today.

The Sarawak state elections will take place on Dec 18 with nomination day set for Dec 6 and early voting on Dec 14.

YOURSAY | Ludicrous for cabinet to approve Najib’s RM100m request
Posted by: superadmin - 11-27-2021, 01:48 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 7d5ea9b3e1d99fbcbbd3e77d131b4c45.jpg=s800]

Lone_star: Someone who was elected and trusted to look after the rakyat has instead been convicted of doing the opposite. He is rejected by the rakyat in GE14 and subsequently requested for his land and housing.

Now, along comes this unelected government and despite his conviction for doing financial injustice to the rakyat, this ‘Keluarga Malaysia’ government is considering approving his said RM100 million request.

Why the need for this? This same man is the one who claimed to have received a RM2.6 billion gift/donation. Has this unelected ‘Keluarga Malaysia’ government got its head in the right place?

Furthermore, there is the mention of setting up a committee to review his request and approval. Is there a need to waste more money, especially when the financial situation of the government is in dire straits?

Isn't it better for the rakyat to just say a simple "no" to his request? By the way, he has withdrawn his request.

It would be better to set up a committee to review the Former Prime Minister’s Remuneration Schedule and to ensure only deserving PMs are given such remuneration after they have rendered meritorious service.

And who better to decide this? The rakyat, of course!

We can’t force PAS to work with us, says BN man
Posted by: superadmin - 11-26-2021, 06:24 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Umno should not force PAS into cooperating with it if the Islamist party does not want to, says a Barisan Nasional (BN) leader.

“We can’t force them to work with us, the same way that they cannot tell us to work with anyone,” Selangor BN information chief Isham Jalil said in a Facebook post.

“If PAS wants to continue working with Bersatu in Perikatan Nasional (PN) for the next general election, that’s their choice and we won’t stop them.”

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang recently rejected an “incomplete” Muafakat Nasional (MN), the pact forged between Umno and PAS in the aftermath of the 14th general election.

MANILA: Philippine snack maker Universal Robina on Friday said it is buying Malaysian biscuit producer Crunchy Foods in a deal worth RM1.93 billion.

Crunchy Foods owns Munchy’s, a leading confectionery brand in Malaysia, as well as Oat Krunch, Lexus, Muzic and Choc-O, which are sold in over 50 countries.

Universal Robina said it acquired its peer from CVC Capital Partners on a “cash-free, debt-free” basis.
CVC took over Munchy’s in 2018.

Universal Robina CEO Irwin Lee called Munchy’s a “great strategic fit” with Universal Robina’s Southeast Asian expansion.

“Together, we will be able to further expand the footprint of Universal Robina Corporation and Munchy’s and unlock growth synergies in Malaysia as well as across the Asean region,” Lee said in a statement.

Munchy CEO Rodney Wong said: “We are excited to become part of URC.

Seeking royal assent for plans for a better Malaysia
Posted by: superadmin - 11-26-2021, 02:02 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20210722-parliament-dewan_rakyat-bernama.jpg]

On October 29, 2021, 55 prominent Malaysians had written to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong seeking His Majesty's consent for the formation of a deliberative platform under the Conference of Rulers to formulate reforms towards a better Malaysia.

Coordinated by Datuk Seri Nazir Razak, the media has been given permission to publish the letter which has been edited for brevity.

DYMM Yang di-Pertuan Agong,

May it please Your Majesty, we, the undersigned, write to propose the formation of a deliberative platform under the auspices of the Conference of Rulers to deliberate and recommend systemic reforms towards a better Malaysia: one that is politically more democratic and stable; economically more dynamic and conditioned to face pressing challenges such the 4th Industrial Revolution and climate change; and socially more just and aligned with our original aspirations of becoming a nation of Malaysians. We propose that such a platform be named the “Better Malaysia Assembly”.

The NCC of 1970: time for a new reset

Our prevailing system remains essentially the one designed in the early 1970s, following deliberations by the National Consultative Council (NCC). Reforms such as amendments to the Sedition Act and affirmative action were innovative ways to cater to the needs of the nation at that time. But these reforms were not designed to last indefinitely, and, in the case of the New Economic Policy (NEP), a 20-year term limit was set. This national reset took place over 50 years ago, and even though so much has changed for Malaysia and Malaysians, the system remains substantially in place.
