‘Big brother’ attitude not helping MN talks, says PAS veep
Posted by: superadmin - 11-28-2021, 06:05 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Negotiations between PAS and Umno under its Muafakat Nasional (MN) pact will face challenges in the near future if some party leaders want to act like a “big brother”, says PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.

The Terengganu menteri besar said such an attitude would hinder PAS’ efforts and greater goal of establishing political cooperation among all Malay-Muslim parties in the nation.

“If there is a ‘big brother’, then it will be tough. PAS adopts an open attitude because our bigger objective is to foster political cooperation among all Malay-Muslim parties,” he said, according to Utusan Malaysia.

Nonetheless, Samsuri said PAS would continue its efforts to bring together both Umno and Bersatu under a form of political cooperation through negotiations.

Accept us as we are, trans women tell families and society
Posted by: superadmin - 11-28-2021, 06:02 PM - Forum: Local News - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Trans women have urged their families and society to accept them for who they are instead of ostracising them and driving them to depression.

During a “hearing” at the virtual Women’s Tribunal Malaysia today, the organisers brought Paddy (not her real name), a 28-year-old trans woman from Negeri Sembilan, to share her plight at being harassed and discriminated against.

She was one of the three trans women who challenged the constitutionality of the state shariah laws in the Negeri Sembilan High Court in 2011.

Will you accept Amanah for sake of ummah unity, Umno man asks PAS
Posted by: superadmin - 11-28-2021, 01:33 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An Umno leader took a swipe at PAS for shutting out its splinter party, Amanah, in pursuing its oft-repeated calls for the unity of the ummah.

Lenggong MP Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said PAS should embrace Amanah if it is insistent that Umno should accept the Bersatu-led Perikatan Nasional (PN) into the Muafakat Nasional (MN) fold in the larger interests of Malay-Muslim unity.

He said today he agreed with PAS’ position that the question of unity of the ummah should not be confined to certain groups or be done in a selective manner.

He was commenting on a statement by PAS Youth chief Abdul Fadhli Shaari who supported party president Abdul Hadi Awang’s stand that MN would be “incomplete” without PN in the grouping.

PM launches two unity plans to reign in racial, religious speech and action

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob today launched the  National Unity Action Plan and the Kami @Keluarga Malaysia Unity Plan in his effort to strengthen interracial and interreligious harmony.

The country’s ninth prime minister who initiated the concept of Keluarga Malaysia — which translates to the “Malaysian Family” — said there is a need for people to be more open in their thinking and focus more on their shared traits than their differences.

“This revelation is also significant so that the multi-ethnic society can control speech and activities that touch on religious sensitivities as well as culture of other ethnicities which often trigger negative reactions,” he said during the launch at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here.

‘A core threat to our democracy’: threat of political violence growing across US

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stood on the House floor and implored her colleagues to hold Paul Gosar accountable for sharing an altered anime video showing him killing her and attacking Joe Biden.

“Our work here matters. Our example matters. There is meaning in our service,” Ocasio-Cortez said in her speech last week. “And as leaders in this country, when we incite violence with depictions against our colleagues, that trickles down into violence in this country.”

House Republicans heard Ocasio-Cortez’s impassioned plea and responded with a collective shrug. All but three Republican members voted against censuring Gosar and stripping him of his committee assignments, while every House Democrat supported the resolution.

Zahid says can still negotiate GE15 to be earlier than July 2022 as Pakatan-govt MoU not ‘holy scripture’

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 — The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the government and the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Opposition coalition is not “holy scripture” that forbids national elections before July next year, according to Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman said the MoU just means that a consensus decision must be reached before polls are called, which allows room for negotiations to take place.

“We respect the MoU, but it is not a holy scripture, far from the words written in the al Quran.

“I don’t think we should breach [the MoU] but what is best is for us to negotiate, with all parties definitely having their different views, through a consensus.

Perikatan to contest 14 Parliament, 42 state seats in Pahang for GE15: Saifuddin
Posted by: superadmin - 11-28-2021, 11:40 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUANTAN – Perikatan Nasional (PN) intends to contest in all 14 Parliament seats and 42 state seats in Pahang in the coming 15th general election (GE15), said Pahang PN chairman Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah.

As preparation, he said, the discussion on seat allocations between parties in PN, namely Bersatu, PAS, and Gerakan, is at the initial stage, with each party sending two representatives.

“The three parties agree that there should be an initial discussion, and the small group will discuss candidly to work out the seat allocation formula for GE15.

"For the time being, the seats to be contested by the parties involved have to be referred to the respective party committees before being finalised,” he said.

Saifuddin, who is also Pahang Bersatu chief, said this in a media conference after attending the Indera Mahkota Bersatu division annual conference at Kompleks Dagangan Mahkota here today.

As preparation for GE15, Saifuddin who is also foreign minister, said Pahang Bersatu’s priority at the moment is to heed the call of party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to set up many branches and increase membership to prepare the party’s machinery. – Bernama, November 28, 2021

What is known so far about new Covid-19 variant Omicron
Posted by: superadmin - 11-28-2021, 11:38 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

SOUTH African scientists have discovered a new Covid-19 variant, Omicron, with multiple mutations that is thought to be highly contagious.

The World Health Organization has designated it a variant of concern and many countries are racing to try and contain it, banning flights from southern Africa.
Scientists are working round-the-clock to dissect the variant and try understand its behaviour.

Here is a brief explainer of what is known so far about Omicron – days after it emerged – as shared by South African scientists.

Origins
It is currently unclear where the variant originated from, but South African scientists were the first to announce the discovery on November 25.

By that time cases had been detected in Hong Kong and Botswana. A day later, Israel and Belgium also uncovered the variant.

Mutation
Scientists discovered the new variant with a "very unusual constellation of mutations" on November 23.

Some of the mutations are already known, and affect transmissibility and immune evasion, but many others are new.

It has the "most mutations we have seen to date", said Professor Mosa Moshabela, deputy vice chancellor of research and innovation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

He said "some of these mutations we have seen before like in Delta and Beta," but others they have not, and "we don't know what the combination of those mutations will translate into."

Leading virologist Tulio de Oliveira said there were around 50 mutations overall, including 30 on the spike protein, the focus of most vaccines as it is what enables the virus to enter cells.

Transmissibility
The pace at which the new daily Covid cases are increasing in South Africa has left scientists suspecting it may be driven by the transmissibility of the new variant.

Although not all are Omicron cases, the daily Covid positivity rate rose this week from 3.6% on Wednesday, 6.5% on Thursday, 9.1% on Friday and 9.2% on Saturday, according to official data.

"Some of the mutations that are expressed have previously been shown to enable the virus to spread easily and quickly, and because of that we suspect that the (new variant) is going to spread quickly," said Moshabela.

Immunity, severity
Some of the genetic mutations shown by the virus include those known to enable the virus to evade immunity.

It is unclear though what the impact will be on vaccines.

As for the severity of the variant, scientists say it has only come to light this week, giving little time for thorough analysis. – AFP, November 28, 2021

Mat Sabu admits PH lost Malay support in Melaka
Posted by: superadmin - 11-28-2021, 11:29 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Amanah president Mohamad Sabu has admitted that Pakatan Harapan’s loss of the Malay community’s support was among the main reasons the coalition failed to win the Melaka state elections last week.

Mohamad said the coalition’s heavy defeat served as a lesson for it to evaluate the true climate of Malaysian politics.

“We saw that PH has lost the support of the Malays. It’s good that the Melaka polls were held, allowing us to measure the real situation. Therefore, PH will be meeting this coming Monday to discuss this matter,” he said after a party event in Kelantan.

“The main thing we need to do is to have more allies than opponents and get rid of the negative perceptions that have been planted against PH. These perceptions aren’t even accurate,” he told Utusan Malaysia.

He claimed that Kelantan, governed by PAS, had enjoyed greater benefits with a PH government in Putrajaya, citing a one-off RM400 million allocation to Kelantan in 2020, prior to the collapse of the PH federal government.

Anwar – a character torn between ‘Saudara’ and ‘Dato Seri’
Posted by: superadmin - 11-28-2021, 09:12 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: rosli-khan-column-300x400-210819-NEW.jpg]

In the mid-1970s when Anwar Ibrahim was teaching at Yayasan Anda, a private college to assist school dropouts at Lembah Pantai, he went to work riding a 70cc Honda Cub.

Among his friends, he was known as ‘Saudara’ Anwar, a respectful and endearing term, derived and used by many Universiti Malaya undergraduates then and the Malay literati group.

‘Saudara’ carries a proletarian tone and denotes equality among the Malay youths and adults of that generation. It was so influential that even DAP emulated it and used the term for their leaders and party cadres. Thus, we had Saudara V David, Saudara P Patto and Saudara Ahmad Nor in the same vein as Saudara Ahmad Boestaman and Saudara Kassim Ahmad.

Today, we still have Saudara Lim Kit Siang, Saudara Loke Siew Fook and Saudara Gobind Singh Deo and yet Saudara Anwar has evolved to become a ‘Dato Seri’. It is still not too late for Anwar to rebrand himself and be referred to as Saudara Anwar again or Pak Anwar, as he is fondly called in Indonesia.
