Covid symptoms linked to the new omicron variant have been described as “extremely mild” by the South African doctor who first raised the alarm over the new strain.

Dr. Angelique Coetzee, chair of the South African Medical Association, told the BBC on Sunday that she started to see patients around Nov.18 presenting with “unusual symptoms” that differed slightly to those associated with the delta variant, which is the most virulent strain of the virus to date and globally dominant.

“It actually started with a male patient who’s around the age of 33 ... and he said to me that he’s just [been] extremely tired for the past few days and he’s got these body aches and pains with a bit of a headache,” she told the BBC.

Groups slam Loke for making Anwar ‘scapegoat’ for PH’s Melaka loss
Posted by: superadmin - 11-29-2021, 05:18 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Two pro-Anwar Ibrahim groups have slammed DAP organising secretary Loke Siew Fook for his call to stop making Anwar Ibrahim the sole Pakatan Harapan candidate following the coalition’s defeat in the recent Melaka elections.

Otai Reformis secretary Abdul Razak Ismail said a post-mortem should have been carried out to find the real cause of PH’s defeat instead of making Anwar a scapegoat.

He said the Melaka polls were a whole new ball game for PH because of the SOPs that were enforced, which limited the party’s ability to hold ceramahs and house-to-house visits.

Guan Eng tells Zahid to respect Pakatan-govt MoU, negotiating GE15 date only for signatories, not Umno chief

[Image: Chang_Yeow_guan_eng_penang_court_2211_(5).jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 — Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi does not have any negotiation right on when the next national election should take place since he is not a signatory to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the government and Pakatan Harapan (PH), Lim Guan Eng said.

The DAP secretary-general told Utusan Malaysia that the Umno man should respect the agreement the Opposition coalition made with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri, which included holding off the dissolution of Parliament before July next year.

He reportedly added that if there were to be any negotiations to the agreement, including the election date, it should come from the parties that signed the MoU and not the Umno president.

“So Ahmad Zahid, don't take more than a spoonful of gravy. We have to hold on to what is signed unless there is a big issue because the MoU involves the Anti-Party Hopping law, the 1963 Malaysia Agreement, Undi18 and the Covid-19 fund injection.

Judges fixated on ‘locus standi’ preventing public interest actions: Tommy Thomas
Posted by: superadmin - 11-29-2021, 01:10 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – The stymieing of public interest litigation (PIL) in Malaysia has come under a blistering new spotlight as Tan Sri Tommy Thomas chided the country’s judiciary for whipping up the “locus standi” card and hampering access to justice.

The former attorney-general said the legal fraternity and the judiciary should undertake more PIL cases to ensure that the federal constitution’s focus on fundamental liberties, as enshrined in part 2 of the document, receives wider interpretation.

Thomas said the Malaysian judiciary has yet to emulate its Indian counterpart in allowing more PIL cases to be heard – instead of being dismissed on grounds of locus standi.

The issue of locus standi is critical as it refers to one’s right or standing to bring a legal action to a court of law. Judges have been known to dismiss attempts to bring public interest matters to court on grounds that the individual or group pursuing the matter lacks locus standi.

Thomas said that the Indian courts throughout, except for an odd review, would even strike constitutional amendments passed on a two-thirds majority in the nation’s Parliament as being unconstitutional, therefore protecting and enlarging fundamental liberties.

“Whereas our courts, as you know, never did that,” he said. “So that is the result. It is a failure on the part of the courts, sad to say.

“Because for both cases, the executive was minded to shrink space, Parliament was controlled by the executive, (and) it was the judiciary left to do its duty.

“One judiciary did its duty and one did not do it so well.”

Pakatan’s defeat in Melaka not harbinger of GE15 performance
Posted by: superadmin - 11-29-2021, 11:18 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 01122021PakatanHarapan-Rebrand-twitter.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Putting the blame solely on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and making the PKR president a “sacrificial lamb” for Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) dismal performance in the recent Melaka polls would be unjust as there were other factors during the campaigning period that came into play, according to analysts.

Despite a total wipeout for PKR which was seen as a severe blow to PH, analysts said it does not indicate that it is the endgame of the opposition coalition – neither is it reflective of what is to come in the 15th general election (GE15).

Universiti Malaya academic Prof Awang Azman Awang Pawi said that while the coalition’s decision to field two “political” frogs for Melaka’s Asahan and Pantai Kundor seats had backfired, it was a collective decision made by three component parties.

Moreover, the four assemblymen who had caused the collapse of the state government by withdrawing support for Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md. Ali were not frogs but were party-less as they were sacked by their respective parties.

PH squabbles could spell trouble in Sarawak and GE15, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 11-29-2021, 11:13 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Internal strife within Pakatan Harapan (PH) could spell trouble for the opposition heading into the Sarawak state elections, and could spill over into the next general election if not kept in check, analysts warn.

Former Universiti Teknologi Malaysia lecturer Azmi Hassan said recent infighting over seat allocations suggested that all is not well in PH, especially in Sarawak.

“In Miri, for example, I think both PKR and DAP will want to contest, which could explain why the PH parties are planning to use their own symbols (rather than the PH logo).

“There seems to be friction after the Melaka elections, and I think it will probably be seen in Sarawak, which will affect the big picture that is GE15 (the next general election),” he told FMT.
