GPS must press PM on ‘Allah’ case, says PSB leader
Posted by: superadmin - 12-06-2021, 12:32 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Sarawakians should push ruling coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to explain why it has not taken a firmer stand on the government’s decision to appeal a court decision that Christians can use the word “Allah” in their religious education and books, said a Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) leader.

“Voters must ask Abang Jo (chief minister and GPS chairman Abang Johari Openg) and GPS ministers and MPs why they have not even tried to speak up for our rights by asking the prime minister to instruct the attorney-general not to appeal the decision on the Allah matter,” said PSB presidential council member Baru Bian.

“GPS is the party that supported the PM to form the federal government. Surely, they would have some clout as the proverbial kingmaker to gain some advantage for Sarawakians.

“Instead, they are still acting like the poor cousins of their political masters in the federal government.

“Only in a country like Malaysia do we have bigots in the majority who bully the minority communities in this way, and our leaders remain mute about it,” he said in a statement.

Don’t walk away from MoU whatever outcome of Najib’s appeal, says MP
Posted by: superadmin - 12-06-2021, 12:24 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: FMT-ong-kian-ming-miti-kl-16042019-7.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) should not turn its back on the memorandum of understanding (MoU) it signed with the federal government regardless of the Court of Appeal’s upcoming ruling on Najib Razak’s RM42 million SRC International case on Wednesday, says a DAP MP.

Highlighting how the MoU has already seen reforms such as the such establishment of more parliamentary special select committees and a prorated allocation for opposition MPs for the final three months of the year, Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming said such improvements in the country’s democratic process will collapse if PH reacts to political events with “short-term thinking”.

“For example, there will be a huge outcry if on Dec 8, the Court of Appeal rules in favour of Najib Razak and overturns his corruption and abuse of power conviction in the High Court over the SRC case,” he said in a statement.

“There will be the inevitable public pressure on PH to revoke the MoU with Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s government. This will be a mistake as it will be playing straight into the hands of some leaders in Umno, who want to trigger a collapse in the federal government and call for GE15 in the next three months.

“The opportunity for long-term institutional reform will be lost. Such an opportunity may not return in the next 10 years or so, especially if Barisan Nasional/Umno were to use its levers of power to repress and weaken the opposition.”

As campaigning starts, Sarawak DAP chief fires salvo at Abang Jo
Posted by: superadmin - 12-06-2021, 12:19 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUCHING: Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen kicked off campaigning for the state elections by firing a salvo at chief minister Abang Johari Openg and his management of the state.

Speaking to reporters after submitting his nomination papers for the Padungan seat, Chong accused Abang Johari, the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chief, of extravagance, citing the depletion of the state’s reserves.

He said that before Abang Johari’s appointment, Sarawak’s reserves stood at RM30 billion. At the end of 2019, the state’s reserves dropped to RM23.9 billion.

“In a short span of six years, the reserves depleted by RM6 billion. That was before Covid-19,” he said.

British aerospace engineer ‘confident’ on MH370’s final resting place
Posted by: superadmin - 12-05-2021, 11:29 PM - Forum: International News - Replies (1)

KUALA LUMPUR – A retired British aerospace engineer who has joined the search for the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 believes he has pinpointed the final resting place of the missing aircraft.

On December 1, Richard Godfrey told Australian Channel 7 morning show Sunrise that he was very confident of the Boeing 777 plane’s current location based on data by the Inmarsat satellite, oceanography drift analysis, and performance data from Boeing.

Godfrey pointed to a specific point in the Indian Ocean, some 1,933km west of the city of Perth, where the wreckage of the plane was believed to be lying at a depth of 4,000m.

“With new technology, we have the Whispernet data, and all four (sources of information) align with a particular point in the Southern Indian Ocean,” he said.

Flight MH370 disappeared while enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board on March 8, 2014.

Its disappearance continues to baffle experts and is regarded as one of aviation industry’s greatest mysteries.

The last operation to find the aircraft ended in May 2018, when US-based exploration company Ocean Infinity failed to locate it after searching more than 112,000sq km of the ocean floor over three months.

Coffee shops confirm new beer licensing for January 1
Posted by: superadmin - 12-05-2021, 11:25 PM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Coffee shops selling beers were only notified of a new policy requiring them to apply for a new licence three weeks ago, just a month and a half before the ruling is supposed to come into force on January 1.

In confirming the policy imposed by the federal government, Petaling Jaya Coffeeshop Association president Keu Kok Meng said businesses have been taken aback by the sudden imposition of the licensing requirement.

Speaking to The Vibes, Keu said his association was called in for a briefing by the Customs Department last month to inform them of the decision.

“It will be enforced nationwide. Of that I’m certain, according to the briefing session. It is understood that enforcement comes under the Excise Regulations 1977. The legislation has been there, but they are only enforcing it now.

“Apparently, the Finance Ministry informed the Customs Department about the decision in March, but we are only being briefed now.

“Definitely, we feel a bit shortchanged by the short notice. So, we will certainly appeal the decision. In fact, we have written to the ministry, seeking for reconsideration.”

Charlie Munger says he wishes cryptocurrencies had ‘never been invented’ and admires China for banning them

[Image: 105891940-1556912146945gettyimages-11409...=740&h=416]

Billionaire investor Charlie Munger still isn’t a fan of cryptocurrency.

“I wish they’d never been invented,” Munger said at the Sohn conference in Sydney on Friday, according to The Australian Financial Review.

“I admire the Chinese, I think they made the correct decision, which was to simply ban them,” Munger added.

This year, interest in digital assets surged, with the cryptocurrency market briefly surpassing a market value of $3 trillion in November and top coins, like bitcoin, hitting record highs.

This isn’t a new stance for the 97-year-old vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. In May, during a Q&A session at Berkshire’s annual shareholder meeting, Munger said that his dislike for bitcoin increased amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Of course I hate the bitcoin success,” he said. “I don’t welcome a currency that’s so useful to kidnappers and extortionists and so forth, nor do I like just shuffling out of your extra billions of billions of dollars to somebody who just invented a new financial product out of thin air.”

“I think I should say modestly that the whole damn development is disgusting and contrary to the interests of civilization,” Munger added.

Sarawakians can use election to get closure on ‘Allah’ issue: Upko chief
Posted by: superadmin - 12-05-2021, 07:10 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20211109-wilfred_madius_tangau-bernama.jpeg]

KOTA KINABALU – Sarawak voters have the power to push for the federal government to withdraw its appeal filed during Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration against the high court ruling on the use of the word “Allah” and three other Arabic words.

Sabah’s Upko president Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau said Sarawak voters can tell the candidates running in the state election that they want closure on the matter.

He calls all political parties in East Malaysia to unite and urge Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to instruct the Attorney-General’s Chambers to withdraw its appeal on the “Allah” issue.

“By withdrawing the appeal, Ismail Sabri can make Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) stand proud in the coming state election, and as his government needs Sarawak and Sabah, he can persuade Malayan hardliners to find civil and reasonable ways to address the Malayan Malay-Muslims’ cultural shock

“The prime minister should walk the talk on his Keluarga Malaysia concept. Show commitment to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 by ordering the Attorney-General’s Chambers to withdraw its appeal on the ‘Allah’ issue,” he said in a statement today.

Tangau, who is Tuaran MP, said Ismail Sabri now has the opportunity to right the wrong left uncorrected for 35 years by four prime ministers – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (twice), Tun Abdullah Badawi, Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said 35 years ago, Dr Mahathir had issued a ban on the use of the word “Allah” and snatched away the right of Christians and other non-Muslims in Borneo to pray to Allah, succumbing to the ignorance and arrogance of some Malayans.

Bersatu never part of Muafakat plan, Tok Mat tells PAS
Posted by: superadmin - 12-05-2021, 06:56 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 27032021_-_KUL_-_Press_conference_with_U...mar_12.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu was never part of the plan when Muafakat Nasional (MN) inked its political charter in September 2019, said Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan amid the souring relationship between Umno and PAS.

In a Facebook post today, the Umno number two said the reason MN was formed was to fight Pakatan Harapan (PH), a coalition Bersatu was a part of then.

“As such, to force Umno to accept Bersatu is against the true spirit of MN’s formation, what more when we reminisce how Bersatu has conspired with DAP in defeating the Umno-led (federal) government,” he said.

Mohamad said this in response to a remark by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang yesterday that Umno’s decision to violate the MN charter, by rejecting the inclusion of Bersatu, was the reason why the Islamist party no longer wants to be part of the pact.

Hadi had said, under the charter, even non-governmental organisations are also to be allowed to join, but claimed Umno failed to ensure this when it came to the matter of implementation.

Mohamad, known as Tok Mat, said while it is true MN should be an umbrella for all the Malays, any party that wishes to join the pact must be in harmony with its interests.

On a similar note, he said the charter must also be interpreted in line with the current political reality of Umno and PAS.

Putrajaya warned against mulling policies to limit alcohol sales in Sabah
Posted by: superadmin - 12-05-2021, 06:48 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Waterfront_Seafood_Restaurant_owner_Thom..._Chong.jpg]

SANDAKAN – Putrajaya has been warned against even mulling policies to limit alcohol sales in Sabah.

A prominent businessman slammed speculation that the federal government could impose a ban on the sale of liquor at grocers, convenience stores, and Chinese medicinal shops, similar to the policy in Kuala Lumpur.

Thomas Lau told The Vibes that alcohol consumption is a part of local customs, and is a must-have for special occasions and celebrations in Sabah and Sarawak.

“Whether you like it or not, no one can take that tradition away from us. Drinking liquor, wine, and beer has become part of our tradition for hundreds of years since our forefathers’ era.

“The Kadazandusun community even has its own traditional alcoholic drinks.”

Lau – a seasoned businessman who owns the popular Waterfront Seafood Restaurant here – said although his restaurant serves alcohol, he still has customers of all races and religions because of the spirit of openness practised in the state.
