Govt should not be involved in business, says Johari

KUALA LUMPUR: A former minister has spoken against the government’s penchant for getting involved in business, saying the focus should be on administering the country.

Citing the example of Malaysia’s 5G rollout, Johari Ghani said the government could have engaged telecommunications companies directly instead of setting up Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), a special-purpose vehicle (SPV).

“In Thailand, when the government decided to implement 5G, it did not set up a 5G entity (SPV). As a result, their rollout was very fast and smooth,” said Johari, who was second finance minister from 2016-2018.

“We (Malaysia) set up a company to deal with the telcos (but) the telcos do not have confidence in the government entity,” Johari told FMT in an interview.

NGOs call for law against religious, racial hatred to protect non-Muslim beliefs

Letter to Editor

THE Global Human Rights Federation (GHRF) which represents 62 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak alongside concerned Malaysians have delivered a memorandum urging Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to implement a bill on religious and racial hatred.

Efforts to preserve unity, harmony and peace in our beloved Malaysia which is populated by people of multiple races, religions and customs are now under threat as evident from several untoward incidents orchestrated by Islamic preachers and speakers who insult and condemn non-Islamic beliefs and religions, thus sparking disharmony and racial tension among Malaysians.

GHRF together with other NGOs have tried to file complaints and reports with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) in relation to incidents of insulting, cursing and humiliating the status of non-Islamic religions and beliefs which are guaranteed by the Federal Constitution.

German president sees lack of vocational training for youth

PETALING JAYA: The visiting president of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, said vocational training was an area which the European country could collaborate with Malaysia.

He said he had noticed a lack of vocational training for young people while on a visit to Penang yesterday.

He said there were many high-tech German companies in the state producing semiconductors and medical supplies, Bernama reported.

“I talked to the young people who voiced their expectations and we need to intensify and do more in the field of vocational training in Malaysia,” he said at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Steinmeier said Malaysia would be an important location for German companies to diversify their businesses and investments.

Malaysia’s ballooning debt a cause for alarm, warns Johari

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s rising level of national debt should not be taken lightly, as the country can no longer rely on oil revenue to keep the economy afloat, says former second finance minister Johari Ghani.

He said Malaysia was lucky in that the government was able to rely on the contributions from Petronas during the pandemic lockdown years.

“That is why we were okay. But these resources don’t last forever. So this is why we need to plan (the economy) urgently,” Johari who is also Titiwangsa MP said in an interview with FMT.

Oil and gas exports by Petronas contributed to Malaysia’s foreign earnings, and dividends, taxes and royalty paid by Petronas provided about 25% of federal government revenue.

Johari said the national debt should not be taken lightly even though Malaysia was blessed with natural resources. Rising levels of government debt were a symptom of an ailing economy, as experienced by Sri Lanka.
