Speed up tabling of Climate Change Act, says former minister

PETALING JAYA: A former minister has urged the government to show political will in tabling the Climate Change Act.

“I think the government should show more urgency in dealing with this,” former energy, science, technology, environment and climate change minister Yeo Bee Yin told FMT.

In a parliamentary written reply on Tuesday, environment and water minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the ministry was still in the “early stages” of developing the framework for the Climate Change Act, which he expects to be tabled in Parliament in 2025.

Who’s arrogant - Dr M or Tony Pua?
Posted by: superadmin - 12-10-2021, 11:46 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 9875580384fad1c5f6b64f52eff3578d.jpeg=s800]

Malaysia Bharu: Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad is scrapping the barrel bottom and hitting below the belt in describing Damansara MP Tony Pua’s alleged involvement in the Finance Ministry when he was the political secretary to then finance minister Lim Guan Eng as significant abuse and misconduct.

Is Mahathir digging up dirt on Lim to tarnish DAP’s prominent and corruption-free role in Pakatan Harapan as fodder for his forthcoming book?

Ironically, the hordes of those freelancing as advisors and/or rent-seekers prancing about in many other ministries, including those directly under Mahathir himself, seem to have missed his observance.

As then finance minister, Lim can walk with his head held high as a towering Malaysian for accepting the arduous role of cleaning up the most corrupt and financially-abused ministry by its predecessor identified as ‘MO1’ and his dominion as the 'worst-case kleptocracy' by the US Department of Justice (DOJ).

To cast aspirations on people like Lim and Pua is the height of ignorance, impudence and malice.

It will be interesting to read what Mahathir has to write about his role in breaching the agreement to hand over power, his alleged role in the Sheraton Move, the alleged subversion by Bersatu, and the elephant in the room – his personal abysmal and contemptible failure as the Harapan PM that earned the wrath of almost every voter and supporter.

Or does he feel that Pua’s advisory role was more damaging and instrumental to the collapse of the Harapan government?

Anonymous_15897: Pua was trying to save taxpayers’ money. He was trying to remove the rent-seekers and leeches that had been sucking the taxpayers’ blood for years.

Chinese businesspeople complained about Pua too? That shows that he tried to remove leeches and rent-seekers regardless of race.

Pua was trying to stop the culture of cronyism and rent-seeking that Mahathir created and nurtured.

Mahathir, you and your daughter are trying to whitewash your miserable legacy and create diversions.

As usual, you use DAP as the punching bag and bogeyman.

Ex-ministers slam PAS over ‘silly remarks’ on ‘revealing’ stewardess uniforms
Posted by: superadmin - 12-09-2021, 09:38 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Two former ministers have hit out at a PAS MP who took issue with the “revealing” uniforms worn by Malaysian air stewardesses, with one saying the Islamist party was bereft of ideas.

Zaid Ibrahim said the country would never be free from such “silly remarks” until PAS was booted out of Parliament.

The former law minister also said such remarks by PAS showed that it could not contribute anything more to the country.

“They have no ideas. They only have on an old-fashioned thinking cap that brings nothing good,” he told FMT.

Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said PAS should instead focus on matters like rising food prices, minimum wage and affordable homes.
“How many times has this (the attire issue) been raised in Parliament?

Post-Najib’s guilty verdict, restoration of judiciary must continue – Aliran
Posted by: superadmin - 12-09-2021, 05:37 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 11052021_-_Najib_Razak_Interview_-_SADIQ_ASYRAF_-57.jpg]

TODAY’S verdict in the SRC International Sdn Bhd trial – finding Datuk Seri Najib Razak guilty of all seven charges of criminal breach of trust, abuse of power, and money laundering – is an important decision with far-reaching political implications.

Court of Appeal judges have upheld the exhaustive judgement of the high court judge, as well as the RM210 million fine and 12-year jail term against Najib.

Najib’s appeal to the Federal Court will probably take place next year. Meanwhile, he remains an MP, but will not be able to contest in the general election.

The verdict sends a powerful message to the corrupt – no one is above the law, and crime does not pay.

It won’t be a walkover for GPS, says analyst

PETALING JAYA: A political analyst predicts that opposition parties in Sarawak will collectively win 30 to 33 of the 82 seats in the Dec 18 Sarawak elections.

James Chin of the University of Tasmania said Parti Bersatu Sarawak (PBS) may win 16, DAP 12, PKR three and Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) two.

He said DAP is the strongest opposition party in Pakatan Harapan (PH), with a better election machinery and resources.

“The party already knew which seats they wanted to contest back in 2019. They also have a clear, strong leader in Chong Chieng Jen, although he is seen by some as arrogant and does not listen to his colleagues,” he said during a webinar organised by Singapore-based ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute today.

Gratification, absurdity and a ‘shadow director’: why the court affirmed Najib’s conviction

[Image: 16022021_-_KUL_-_Najib_Razak_at_Kuala_Lu...ien-07.JPG]

KUALA LUMPUR – The conviction of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was upheld unanimously by the Court of Appeal today, igniting waves of emotion and intrigue, both in Malaysia and around the world.

While delivering the judgment, justice Datuk Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil said the earlier findings by high court judge Nazlan Ghazali which led to Najib’s conviction were indeed correct, given that the prosecution had successfully proven his guilt.
Among other things, Karim referred to a defence by Najib which claimed that he was acting for national interests when dealing with the SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.

The Court of Appeal instead labelled his actions as a “national embarrassment”.

Thus, it maintained the 12-year imprisonment and RM210 million fine imposed against Najib. However, the defence successfully obtained a stay of execution pending an appeal to the Federal Court.

I have mellowed, says DAP man once seen as firebrand

[Image: 01-PRN-SARAWAK-12-ABDUL-AZIZ-ISA-BATU-KITANG-DAP.jpg]

KUCHING: Abdul Aziz Isa, the DAP candidate for Batu Kitang, claims he is no longer the brash young politician he used to be and is therefore in a good position to win the seat in the coming Sarawak elections.

“I’ve mellowed down,” the 32-year-old told FMT.

“In 2016, I was very fiery. I was young and I made mistakes. People make mistakes but the most important thing is that they change, and they should be given a chance if they change and improve.”

The Najib verdict - a bittersweet victory
Posted by: superadmin - 12-09-2021, 11:11 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 919348505cc9ac0f657e6d8a38c3a81c.jpg=s800]

Vijay47: So, what now? Many Malaysians, including me, were not wholly convinced that our judiciary would rise to the occasion when push came to shove. Many believed that High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali was that solitary swallow, an act unlikely to be followed.

Today, to our great relief and delight, we have been proven wrong. The pride of our courts has been returned to its traditional heights.

To me, this is the greater victory. Not whether Najib Abdul Razak moves residence soon or has to change his wardrobe to standard issue, though with more vibrant colours. These are trivialities that pale in comparison to the magnitude of the respect the judiciary has earned.

For sure, Najib will appeal to the Federal Court, a futile effort from which only RM9 million counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah would benefit as he dances to the bank.

Judge Nazlan, and now the Court of Appeal, have done a thorough job in plugging every possible hole that might be exploited, so much so that overturning today’s decision has about as much chance as that snowball in hell.

Yet, there is more. Let us hope that bodies like the MACC, the police, and even the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) awake fully to their inherent responsibilities and try to elevate themselves from the depths they have fallen into.

Their exuberance in withdrawing charges and their paralysis in filing appeals are almost fatal shortcomings they have to rid themselves of.

My later vodka-Sprite promises to be particularly exhilarating!

Malaysia Bharu: Thank you, judges, for a fair judgment that even Umno stewards would welcome as a long-awaited opportunity to dislodge the 1MDB baggage and move on to better times.

As for the people, it is a long-awaited relief to see possible closure to the Najib/Rosmah Mansor era of unbridled abuses, corruption, international infamy and their endless greed for unearned wealth and luxury that drove them to steal from their own people largely consisting of the poor.

The people couldn't wait for Najib to begin serving his sentence. His remorselessness and manipulative behaviour in court and outside ever since he was charged have left a bitter taste in the people's mouths.

Najib is trying to outdo the courts through political manoeuvring. That should not be allowed to happen as there are just too many alleged crimes to his name. The people and country should be spared from his cunning manipulative ways to politicise, prolong and manoeuvre his way out.

Snowman: Any other person and they would have ended up in jail already. So, why the double standard?

If Najib had been convicted and the Court of Appeal agreed with the initial ruling, then he is guilty as of now, regardless of the option for further appeals. As such, the sentencing should start immediately. His lawyers can visit him in prison for their preparations for the final appeal.

Yet, he continues to roam free to do whatever and go wherever he likes. What is the message that we are sending here?

That anyone can rob the country blind but as long as they have the money to fight and drag the case on indefinitely, then they can remain free and considered innocent until the Federal Court's ruling?

By that formula, please release all the inmates who are awaiting their cases in the apex court.

It only looked like Najib was subjected to the same law as the rest of us but it's obvious that he enjoys benefits none of us does.
