Dr M should stick to facts, not get emotional, says Kian Ming

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP’s Ong Kian Ming has come to the defence of his party colleague and Damansara MP Tony Pua over several accusations made by Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The Bangi MP was responding to excerpts from the former prime minister’s new book in which the latter makes a veiled reference to Pua, accusing him of being arrogant and behaving like a minister during his tenure as the political secretary to finance minister Lim Guan Eng in the former Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration.

Court should limit Najib’s movements despite stay of execution: C4
Posted by: superadmin - 12-08-2021, 03:19 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20210317-c4-cynthia_gabriel-mindarakyat_dot_net.jpg]

PUTRAJAYA – Even though the Court of Appeal has granted a stay of execution over former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s conviction, it should still limit and curtail his movements especially when it comes to political activities, an anti-graft watchdog said today.

Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) founding director Cynthia Gabriel told The Vibes it would be unacceptable for someone who has been convicted to go gallivanting around, canvassing for votes like what happened during the Melaka election last month.

“The stay of execution is part of due processes under the rule of law, but some restrictions on political activities should probably be made, because right now he is moving around generating political support,” said Gabriel.

“Such restrictions should be decided by the court. The stay is part of due process until the maximum allowable trial is completed. Until then, he should or should not be given a stay of execution, depending on how the judges discern the situation.

Extreme policies by PAS will affect Sarawakians, says DAP MP
Posted by: superadmin - 12-08-2021, 03:11 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 3_KELVIN_YII_LEE_WUEN_DAP_BANDAR_KUCHING...072021.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: A DAP MP has told Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to stop misleading Sarawakians that the extreme policies from Putrajaya, influenced by PAS, would not affect them.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii said this included the recent controversial decision on liquor licensing for small coffee shops and restaurants, which was rescinded following protests.

At a press conference today, Yii said more than 250,000 Sarawakians are staying in the peninsula and some of them had businesses there.

“They will be affected by such extreme policies and regulations. Are we not going to speak out for their rights?

“If GPS continues to enable this government, we will see more such extreme policies being implemented in the near future.

Cold hard facts: Najib verdict proves prosecution apolitical, says lead
Posted by: superadmin - 12-08-2021, 02:25 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

[Image: 08122021_-_Sitambaram_at_najib_appeal_ve...nafis.jpeg]

PUTRAJAYA – Lead prosecutor Datuk V. Sithambaram has welcomed the Court of Appeal’s decision today upholding the conviction of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak over corruption involving SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.

He suggested that the verdict pronounced by Court of Appeal judge Datuk Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil negates any arguments that the prosecution had elements of politics.

“As prosecutors we have investigation papers and the testimonies of all witnesses. There’s no politics there, these are cold hard facts.

“Two courts and four judges found that the evidence pointed towards the commission of offences Najib was charged with.

“I think the facts speak for themselves,” Sithambaram said during a press conference inside the Palace of Justice.

He also took the opportunity to explain there is currently no gag order against Najib over the making of comments concerning the case, but warned that anyone who comments on a pending matter with the intention to influence the case could be found guilty of contempt.

“But I think very often the rules are broken,” he added.

In unanimous decision, court affirms Najib’s conviction, sentence in SRC case
Posted by: superadmin - 12-08-2021, 11:02 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal today affirmed the conviction and sentence imposed by the High Court last year on Najib Razak in relation to RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd, dealing a major setback to his efforts to make a comeback to mainstream politics.

In a unanimous decision, a three-member bench chaired by Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil said trial judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali did not misdirect himself for an appellate intervention.

Karim, who sat with Has Zanah Mehat and Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera, also dismissed the former prime minister’s appeal against his sentence.

Nazlan had sentenced the Pekan MP to 12 years’ jail and fined him RM210 million after finding him guilty on seven counts of corruption in July last year.

Najib, 68, is the first former prime minister in the country to be charged in court and sentenced to jail.

Book review: why Kit Siang is a towering figure in M’sian politics – P. Gunasegaram
Posted by: superadmin - 12-07-2021, 05:55 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: kee_thuan_chye_lim_kit_siang_malaysian_f...ee_pic.png]

KEE Thuan Chye’s biography on Lim Kit Siang is perhaps the most important independent contribution to literature on the DAP stalwart. It explains more clearly than anything I have read why he is such a towering and influential figure in Malaysian politics and deserves a place in the history of our country.

For all the talk of DAP being a parochial, Chinese-based party, his leadership of the party rattled Umno/Alliance and subsequently Barisan Nasional (BN) to its very roots in over half a century of him being a key opposition leader. The depth and breath of the issues he covered is truly amazing.

That’s not because of the Chinese-ness of the party, but the true multiracial and multicultural tenets that Lim held to by example and sacrifice in the face of enormous adversity. He continuously and unwaveringly championed the cause of democratic socialism against all odds, holding on to his principles tenaciously and paying the price for it.

And this meant taking the battle to key elements within his own party, many of whom wanted Lim to champion mainly the Chinese cause, because that was where DAP’s support base was and still is. But no, that was not for him.

It is largely due to Lim’s credit that DAP has maintained its multiracial mantle, wielding non-Chinese candidates in Chinese-majority areas and winning seats. In fact, there have been far more Indian MPs from DAP than from MIC, for instance.

Najib fails in attempt to add fresh evidence in SRC appeal
Posted by: superadmin - 12-07-2021, 05:46 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal today dismissed Najib Razak’s application to include fresh evidence to set aside his conviction in the RM42 million SRC International corruption appeal.

The former prime minister, who is on RM2 million bail, will appear before a three-member bench chaired by Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil, when judgment is delivered on his appeal tomorrow via Zoom

Karim said the bench disallowed Najib’s application as he failed to show the fresh evidence was not available during the appeal, or that it was relevant, capable of belief, and that the new evidence will create doubt in the prosecution’s case.

“Further, the applicant also failed to satisfy Section 61 of the Courts of Judicature Act that fresh evidence is required for the justice of the case,” said Karim, who is sitting with Has Zanah Mehat and Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera.

Putrajaya reconsidering single wholesale network for 5G roll-out: Annuar
Posted by: superadmin - 12-07-2021, 03:39 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Following feedback from industry players, Putrajaya is now reconsidering the single wholesale network system for the nation’s 5G roll-out.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa explained at a press conference today that second opinions from telecommunication companies suggested that there should be more competition in the 5G industry.

“To date, the government decided to adopt a single wholesale network system, whereby Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) provides the 5G infrastructure.

“That was the original plan. Now we have received second opinions and feedback from telco companies who are requiring the roll-out to be more competitive. So we are looking into that,” Annuar said.

The Ketereh MP added that DNB’s roll-out will continue as planned in the meantime. The 5G roll-out is taking place in parts of Klang Valley this month.

“Moving forward, I can’t give you a definite answer because the cabinet is looking at the second opinions.

Yeoh a great patriot and even greater friend, says Syed Saddiq
Posted by: superadmin - 12-07-2021, 02:52 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: syed-saddiq-hannah-yeoh-fmt-051221-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has thrown his support behind Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, who faced criticism after being photographed wearing a headscarf when visiting a mosque in Kuala Lumpur recently.

In a Facebook post, Syed Saddiq defended the “great, patriotic Malaysian and even greater friend” from the attacks she had received since her visit.

“The past few days have been tough on Hannah.

“On one hand, she has been labelled an ultra-Christian who wants to convert Muslims. On the other, she is being called a Chinese without a backbone who wants to conform to  Muslim norms.

“In my many, many conversations with Hannah, I have never once felt that she wanted to convert me to Christianity, nor have I felt that she’s a conformist.

100-day report card: Transport expert gives Wee an ‘F’
Posted by: superadmin - 12-07-2021, 11:12 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUCHING: Wee Ka Siong’s first 100 days as transport minister have been anything but a success, says a transport consultant, highlighting the lack of progress on a stalled railway project.

Rosli Azad Khan, who has over 30 years’ experience, said the stalled Klang Valley Double Tracking Phase 2 (KVDT2) is the number one transport issue in the country.

The KVDT2 project involves the rehabilitation of 265km of railway tracks from Salak South in Kuala Lumpur to Seremban and from Simpang Port Klang near MidValley in Kuala Lumpur to Port Klang.

The project has been delayed twice since 2017, cancelled by the Pakatan Harapan government, reinstated, then cancelled again by the Perikatan Nasional government, leading to a suit by the contractor, Dhaya Maju-LTAT.

Rosli said the failure to resolve the issue has led to increased safety risks for railway workers and users as well as delays in commuter and cargo services resulting in losses for the economy and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB).
