Sarawakians are hearing too many ‘hot-air project’ announcements once too often
Posted by: superadmin - 12-05-2021, 05:04 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

MIRI – When Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg resumed the chief minister’s (CM) role almost five years ago, he announced plans to construct a LRT mega-project in Kuching costing some RM4 billion.

That project has yet to materialise.

Johari came to Miri shortly after becoming CM and proclaimed that all of rural Sarawak would have internet connection from a “balloon internet” system where huge balloons would be hovering the skies equipped with internet devices so that rural folks will be able to use their handphones and digital devices.

That balloon internet project remains a dream until today. Nothing ever came out of it.

In fact, many government politicians and state representatives are clueless about whether the balloon internet system is supposed to work in rural Sarawak due to its torrential rain, heavy clouds and thunderstorms.

MP SPEAKS | Govt adopting PAS' policies in latest alcohol sales restrictions
Posted by: superadmin - 12-05-2021, 04:54 PM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

[Image: 3397a054ce049d33780f40e20c61579a.jpg=s800]

MP SPEAKS | Following the unjust ban by Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) on sundry shops and Chinese medicine halls selling alcohol to non-Muslims, the federal government has now extended its interference in the customary lifestyle and business practices of non-Muslims nationwide by imposing new restrictions on coffeeshops selling beer to non-Muslims.

Clearly, the federal government is adopting PAS’ extremist policies nationwide, including Sabah and Sarawak, by requiring ordinary coffeeshops selling beer to apply for alcohol licences. Coffeeshops and restaurants in Perlis were also reported by China Press that beer sales are limited to only four cartons daily.

This is not just about imposing additional financing burden via extra licensing costs for coffeeshops and restaurants of more than RM1,000 under the present difficult economic circumstances caused by the economic recession and Covid-19 pandemic. This is about deliberately imposing unnecessary restrictions and interfering in the customary lifestyle and business practices on non-Muslims that have been undisturbed since Merdeka to fulfil the political extremism of PAS.

Good strategy for opposition to use own logos, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 12-05-2021, 11:09 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The opposition parties’ decision to use their own logos and push their respective manifestos in the coming Sarawak elections is a logical move and a good strategy, two political analysts say.

James Chin of the University of Tasmania’s Asia Institute said in practice, Sarawak Pakatan Harapan “does not exist”, referring to the coalition that comprises DAP, PKR and Amanah.

The PKR and DAP chapter in East Malaysia has been at odds recently, with Sarawak PKR accusing the state DAP of not cooperating in seat negotiations for the state elections, a charge the latter denied. DAP has already announced candidates in 18 of the 26 constituencies it will contest.

“So in terms of strategy, it was the only outcome that was possible,” Chin told FMT.

Brickbats for law ministry, bouquets for minister
Posted by: superadmin - 12-05-2021, 11:07 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has been lambasted for not prioritising “major and meaningful” reforms in the ministry’s first 100 days under the Ismail Sabri Yaakob government.

Sepang MP Hanipa Maidin, who was a deputy law minister in the former Pakatan Harapan government, said there was a lack of reforms in the Election Commission, Attorney-General’s Chambers, Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission, and the Parliament.

He also criticised the ministry and EC for not being quick in implementing Undi18 (voting age of 18) and automatic voter registration which he said should have been implemented for the Melaka state elections.

“It seems to me that the government does not support these reforms because the young voters tend to vote for the opposition,” said Hanipa.

Contests in Chinese-majority seats will be tough, says SUPP
Posted by: superadmin - 12-04-2021, 09:44 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

MIRI: The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) admits that the fight for urban seats, especially those with Chinese-majority voters, will see stiff competition in the 12th Sarawak state elections.

Its secretary-general, Sebastian Ting, said among the constituencies that will see fierce contests were Pujut, Senadin, Piasau, Batu Kawah, Kota Sentosa, Padungan, Batu Kitang, Pending and Batu Lintang.

“Across Sarawak, all constituencies with a majority of Chinese voters are expected to face strong competition.

“This includes all 18 seats contested by SUPP,” he told reporters after launching the Sepakat@Komuniti programme organised by the information department here today.

Sebastian said politics was unpredictable but all candidates from SUPP would continue to serve the people, in line with the main objective of the party since it was established in 1959.

‘Not right’ to have Izzana on MDEC board, say lawyers, activists
Posted by: superadmin - 12-04-2021, 09:38 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

GEORGE TOWN: A possible breach of ethics has been raised about the appointment of Izzana Salleh, daughter of former Umno minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, to the board of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).

Lawyers and activists said it was not right for someone being sued by the government to be appointed to a government agency.

Izzana was reported to have been recently made an independent non-executive director of MDEC despite her being named as a defendant in a government suit to recover RM253.6 million owed by the National Feedlot Corporation Sdn Bhd (NFC).

She was an NFC board member at the time.

Lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla said it was wrong for a government agency to appoint someone named as a defendant in a suit filed by the federal authorities.

“It is very wrong for the government to blow hot and cold. One arm of the government takes her to court while the other arm gives her a directorship.

Umno breached deal for open MN alliance, says PAS chief
Posted by: superadmin - 12-04-2021, 09:33 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: PAS rejected Muafakat Nasional (MN) because Umno had violated the charter agreed upon by both parties during its formation, says PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

The MN charter held that the two parties should accept other parties, including Bersatu and NGOs, Hadi said, according to Utusan Malaysia. However, he said this was not the reality.

“The Umno leadership only wanted the party and PAS to be in MN. This means it had strayed away from what we agreed upon,” he said.

New Human 'Organ' Was Hiding in Plain Sight
Posted by: superadmin - 12-04-2021, 05:58 PM - Forum: Health News - Replies (1)

The interstitium, scientists found, is under our skin and between our organs. Understanding it may eventually help treat disease.

[Image: 01-human-tissue-study-00.jpg?w=795&h=795]

Lurking just under your skin might be a new organ only now identified for the first time, say a team of scientists.

In a new study published in the journal Scientific Reports, researchers from New York University's School of Medicine say they have found a new organ they're calling the "interstitium."

It's nearly everywhere—just below the skin's surface, surrounding arteries and veins, casing the fibrous tissue between muscles, and lining our digestive tracts, lungs, and urinary systems.

It looks like a mesh. The interstitium is a layer of fluid-filled compartments strung together in a web of collagen and a flexible protein called elastin. Previously, scientists thought the layer was simply dense connective tissue.

The organ has seemingly been hidden in plain sight, and scientists say they missed it because of the way tissue is studied. Before being placed under a microscope, samples are thinly sliced and treated with chemicals that allow researchers to identify key components more easily. While the process is helpful for more easily spotting details, it drains fluid from the sample.

Sarawakians still poor despite state’s natural wealth, Anwar tells voters
Posted by: superadmin - 12-04-2021, 03:17 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20211204_anwar_ibrahim_in_miri_Anwar_Ibrahim_fb.jpg]

MIRI – Sarawakians must not be afraid to make drastic changes to the government as it is the only way to get rid of the rampant corrupt and cronyistic practices in the state, said opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

During his visit to Kg Lambir here yesterday, Anwar said Sarawakians have the power to change the administration on polling day.

“Use your voting power to make the changes necessary in this state. Use the ballot box to get rid of corruption by the rich and powerful in Sarawak.

“This state is very rich in all kinds of resources, but the general population is still poor. The wealth is in the hands of the powerful businessmen and politicians in government.

China's democracy 'more extensive, genuine and effective' than US democracy: official
Posted by: superadmin - 12-04-2021, 03:09 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 1ef4d045-84ef-478e-87dd-7e671672b92b.jpeg]

China's democracy is more extensive, more genuine and more effective than the US democracy, as the US politicians represent the interest groups but in China the whole-process democracy ensures implementation of policies that change people's lives, senior Chinese officials said on Saturday as China issued a white paper titled "China: Democracy That Works."

Under the US democratic system, politicians are agents of interest groups, rather than representing the interests of the majority of voters and the interests of the country as a whole, Tian Peiyan, Deputy Director of the Policy Research Office of the CPC Central Committee, said at a press conference on the launch of the white paper on Saturday.

"Those politicians can make random promises for the sake of elections, but they seldom fulfill their promises after being elected. Superficially they accept voters' supervision, but in fact as long as they are elected, the voters have no option but to wait for the next election. They are only awakened during voting but become dormant after voting," Tian said.

US voters listen to those dazzling slogans only during the election, but they have no say after the election, the Chinese official said.
