Azmin as DPM? He’d flounder in Parliament: Shahrir |

KUALA LUMPUR – Size matters, said Umno veteran Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad, when it comes to restoring Parliament’s rightful role, while Bersatu’s Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali is not the deputy one needs as a Dewan Rakyat strategist.
Shahrir, in a Facebook post today, laid out his reasons, and among them is that a deputy prime minister is typically the government whip responsible for managing strategies in the Lower House by wrangling the bloc’s frontbenchers and backbenchers.
“This is why, in picking a deputy prime minister, his role in the Dewan Rakyat must be taken into account.
“A parliamentarian like Azmin is incapable of this role because of the opposition’s anger towards him. He is seen as a ‘political criminal’ by both sides of the aisle and cannot be DPM, even if Tan Sri Muhyiddin (Yassin) was still PM.

PETALING JAYA: A graft watchdog has welcomed a suggestion that an opposition MP be appointed deputy speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, saying it could herald a move towards mature politics.
Rasuah Busters founder Hussamuddin Yaacub told FMT the public would see such an appointment as a relief from months of intense political squabbling.
“It’s a baby step towards new politics, towards mature politics,” he said.
The suggestion came yesterday from outgoing deputy speaker Azalina Othman Said.
Hussamuddin said bipartisanship was crucial for the country’s political development.
He praised Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and PH leaders for reaching a consensus on reforms, saying this would smoothen cooperation in Parliament.
He called for professionalism from all MPs, who must quit the habit of shouting and name-calling during their debates.
Political analyst Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said the opposition had many qualified and legally trained candidates to take on the post of deputy speaker.
He described Nga Kor Ming, Hannah Yeoh, Gobind Singh Deo and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as the obvious choices.

IPOH, Aug 27 — A total of 9,772 people suffered mental disturbances in Perak throughout the Covid-19 pandemic from January 2020 to June 2021, the State Legislative Assembly was told today.
State Women and Family Development, Welfare, Community Well-being and NGO Committee chairman Datuk Dr Wan Norashikin Wan Noordin said 5,213 mental illness cases were registered from January to December last year while 4,559 cases were registered from January to June this year.
“According to statistics released by the police, the number of suicides in Perak since the Movement Control Order was implemented from March 2020 to July 2021 is 80 people,” she said.
Depression was cited as the top contributing factor for suicides, based on data from 33 cases, she said.
However, Dr Wan Norashikin said that in 24 cases, the reasons for suicide were unknown.
Other contributing reasons that could be pinned down were financial problems (13), illness (four), drugs (three) and mental problems (also three).
“If broken down by ethnic composition, the Chinese have the highest suicide cases at 32; followed by Indians at 29 cases; others, 11 cases; and Malays eight cases,” she said.
She added that suicides were more prevalent among men (66) than women (14).
Dr Wan Norashikin was responding to Changkat Jong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Azhar Jamauddin who asked for the statistics on mental disturbances and suicide cases since the Covid-19 outbreak started in Malaysia.

Capitol Police officers sue Trump, allies over insurrection |

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Capitol Police officers who were attacked and beaten during the Capitol riot filed a lawsuit Thursday against former President Donald Trump, his allies and members of far-right extremist groups, accusing them of intentionally sending a violent mob on Jan. 6 to disrupt the congressional certification of the election.
The suit in federal court in Washington alleges Trump “worked with white supremacists, violent extremist groups, and campaign supporters to violate the Ku Klux Klan Act, and commit acts of domestic terrorism in an unlawful effort to stay in power.”
The suit was filed on behalf of the seven officers by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. It names the former president, the Trump campaign, Trump ally Roger Stone and members of the extremist groups the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers who were present at the Capitol and in Washington on Jan. 6.

Kabul airport attack: What do we know? |

Two powerful bomb blasts have struck the perimeter of Kabul's Hamid Karzai International Airport, as civilians continued to seek to escape on flights from Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
At least 60 people have been killed and 140 others wounded, a senior health official in Kabul told the BBC.
The Pentagon confirmed US service personnel were among those killed - 11 US Marines and a Navy medic.
The bombings came hours after Western governments had warned their citizens to stay away from the airport, because of an imminent threat of an attack by IS-K, the Afghanistan branch of the Islamic State group.
Here is what we know about what happened.

US judge reprimands Trump election fraud lawyers |

A US judge has issued a blistering ruling against prominent lawyers who represented Donald Trump after his 2020 presidential election defeat.
US District Judge Linda Parker described a lawsuit filed in Michigan by Mr Trump's counsel as a "profound abuse of the judicial process".
Her 110-page ruling, issued Wednesday, sanctioned Sidney Powell, Lin Wood and seven others who alleged voter fraud.
Judge Parker said the lawyers intended to undermine the electoral system.
"This case was never about fraud - it was about undermining the people's faith in our democracy and debasing the judicial process to do so," she said in her ruling.
Judge Parker ordered the lawyers to pay the court costs of their opponents - the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan - and undergo 12 hours of legal education.

With Pakatan parley, smooth sailing ahead for Ismail Sabri |

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob may have turned the tables in his favour less than a week after being sworn in.
From holding a slim majority in the Dewan Rakyat with the support of only 114 of the 220 living MPs, the Bera lawmaker now enjoys the conditional backing of opposition politicians, following a meeting with Pakatan Harapan leaders two days ago.
Opposition chief Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has promised not to “complicate” matters if a vote of confidence is held in Parliament, provided that the political atmosphere remains as it is and pro-rakyat programmes are delivered.
Ismail Sabri’s decision to reach across the aisle was lauded, with leaders from both sides of the divide, pundits and the public commending him for acceding to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree for political differences to be set aside in the fight against Covid-19.
But beyond that, the move has given the prime minister much-needed breathing space and a sense of security to work without the constant pressure and fear of losing majority support should certain quarters withdraw their backing if their demands are not met.
It was this very situation that plagued Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s 17-month tenure as prime minister, and eventually led to his downfall.

Reset approach to economic management as well: Bandar Kuching MP |

KUCHING – Putrajaya should not only focus on resetting its approach on managing the Covid-19 pandemic, but must also relook how it is managing the nation’s bruised economy by involving opposition leaders and parties as well, said a DAP lawmaker.
Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii told The Vibes that a paradigm shift in these two critical areas can be catalysed through a bipartisan “whole of society approach” and by stronger recognition of the opposition’s role, as well as its input on the country’s National Recovery Plan (NRP).
He said that the recent meeting between newly minted Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders will not only help transform national politics for the better, but also shift the focus to a Covid-19 reset plan and economic turnaround plan.
“Many of our suggestions have been communicated to the prime minister in the meeting PH leaders had with him, and now, it is up to the current government to show its sincerity to implement them.
