NEW YORK, June 1 ― Waking up an hour earlier than usual could reduce some people's risk of depression by 23 per cent, according to an American study.
The early bird gets the worm. This saying may very well also apply to mental health. Waking up an hour earlier could reduce the risk of depression by 23 per cent, according to a study conducted by the University of Colorado at Boulder and the Broad Institute and published in JAMA Psychiatry.
Sleep and mood seem to be intricately connected. Back in 2018, a study by Dr. Vetter showed that “early risers” were up to 27 per cent less likely to develop depression within four years. For this new study, researchers based their findings on 840,000 people.
Are there people who are 'naturally' predisposed to get up early and others to get up late? Yes, say the researchers. Our ability to wake up early (or late) would depend in part on our genes.
For this new study, the scientists examined the genetic data of 840,000 people. Among them, 85,000 wore sleep trackers for 7 days and 250,000 filled out questionnaires about their sleep preferences. On average, those evaluated went to bed at 11 pm, woke up at 6 am, and were at their sleep midpoint at 3 am.
The researchers then matched these initial results with another sample that included genetic information, medical records, surveys of major depressive disorder diagnoses, all anonymously. They concluded that people who were genetically predisposed to be “early risers” had a lower risk of depression.

The story of Spain’s ‘terrifying confidence’ – and how it conquered the world |

On 6 September 2006, in front of 14,500 fans at Windsor Park, Spain's serial underachievers once again came up short, losing 3-2 to Northern Ireland in a Euro 2008 qualifier.
No-one back home was particularly surprised. This was a side who had flattered to deceive for years. Since winning their only title - the 1964 European Championship - they had just once progressed beyond the quarter-finals of a major tournament.
Luis Aragones, the La Liga veteran appointed national team manager in 2004, had begun his reign with a promising 25-game unbeaten run. But once again the optimism disappeared, this time following a last-16 defeat at the 2006 World Cup by an ageing France side many felt were entirely beatable.
Three months on, Aragones knew something had to be done. That night in Northern Ireland convinced him things had to change.
It was the start of something remarkable. Within six years, Spain would be heralded as the most successful international team of all time. This is how it happened.

Yusuf Hashim
I am really getting a bit tired of the antics of our Wannabe PM, our Backdoor PM, our Ex PM & our Convicted PM, and all our Frog Master CMs.
I am at a loss to find sub-flattering adjectives to describe them. Seems to me they are all a lot like the insane Nero, playing his fiddle while Rome burns.
Our country is in dire straits from this Covid menace, yet our not so honourable PMs think nothing of precipitating by-elections, snap elections, and flaccid dick erections to further their selfish, dishonest, dishonourable and even immoral objectives.
They are a terrible example to our children, as to what Leaders (I hate that word) and Leadership are all about. They will resort to everything, and anything at all, to further their selfish interests. Nothing is sacred. I suspect, they will probably even consider selling their mothers too, if it contributes to their objectives.
I believe none of them really have our interests, and our country’s interest, in their black hearts and warped minds.
The Backdoor PM’s methods of buying support for his shaky government by creating one of the world’s biggest cabinet (last I checked about 70 ministers and deputy ministers), and appointing sycophants, frogs and incompetent MPs as heads of our GOCs and GLCs, are not easy to forgive. How he came to be the PM should be a textbook lesson in treachery.

If you’ve struggled to think clearly during the coronavirus pandemic, you could be experiencing “brain fog” – and one neuroscientist has explained how to beat it.
“Brain fog is a collection of symptoms which give rise to loss of mental clarity or foggy thinking,” Sabina Brennan wrote in her recently published book “Beating brain fog.”
While there are no statistics on the prevalence of brain fog specifically, Brennan highlighted that around 600 million people worldwide suffer from cognitive dysfunction, which she said is a clinical description of this issue.
Difficulty thinking clearly has also been noted as one of the debilitating symptoms of “long Covid.” But even if you haven’t had the coronavirus this past year, Brennan told CNBC you might still have experienced brain fog and outlined some ways to overcome it.

NSA spying row: Denmark accused of helping US spy on European officials |

Denmark's secret service helped the US spy on European politicians including German Chancellor Angela Merkel from 2012 to 2014, Danish media say.
The Defence Intelligence Service (FE) collaborated with the US National Security Agency (NSA) to gather information, according to Danish public service broadcaster DR.
Intelligence was allegedly collected on other officials from Germany, France, Sweden and Norway.
Similar allegations emerged in 2013.
Then, secrets leaked by US whistleblower Edward Snowden alleged tapping of the German chancellor's phone by the NSA.
When those allegations were made, the White House gave no outright denial but said Mrs Merkel's phone was not being bugged at the time and would not be in future.
Germany is a close ally of the US.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and a spokesperson for Angela Merkel have said they were not aware of Danish involvement until the DR report, which was shared with other European media over the weekend.

KUALA LUMPUR: The legal team for Dr Mahathir Mohamad-led Pejuang told the High Court here that home minister Hamzah Zainudin “purposely delayed” his decision on the party’s registration so that it would not be able to contest in the election.
Lawyers Rafique Rashid Ali and Mior Nor Haidir Suhaimi argued that it is not an uphill task for the minister to decide on Pejuang’s appeal on the registration.
They said that after the Registrar of Societies (RoS) rejected Pejuang’s application to register the party on Jan 6, Pejuang had immediately lodged its appeal to Hamzah, as required under Section 18 of Societies Act.
“After 116 days, there was still no reply from him. Such a matter (Pejuang’s appeal) can be easily decided within seven days.

PETALING JAYA: Days after the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) denied claims of a “land scandal”, plantation industries and commodities minister Khairuddin Aman Razali has again been accused of interfering with the board’s handling of two parcels of land it owns.
Former MRB chairman Ahmad Nazlan Idris has said that the minister did get involved in the matter. Ahmad Nazlan denied that he had any connection to the scandal, saying his contract had been terminated by then.
There have been allegations that Khairuddin approved the lease of two plots of land at Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur owned by the MRB, below the market rate. The minister has since lodged a police report over these allegations.
Ahmad Nazlan, who is also Jerantut MP, maintained that the MRB’s board of directors viewed this issue seriously and had formed three task forces while taking steps to improve the running of LGM Properties Corporation (LGMPC), a corporation owned by MRB.
“However, the minister interfered and allowed LGMPC to run as usual,” the Umno MP claimed in a statement today.

At least 22 people shot, 2 fatally, after assailants get out of an SUV and fire assault rifles at a club, police say
(CNN)Police are asking for the public's help in finding whoever opened fire at a Florida club early Sunday, killing at least two people and wounding at least 20 more, Miami-Dade Police Department Director Alfredo Ramirez III said.
Shortly after midnight, a white Nissan Pathfinder pulled up to the El Mula Banquet Hall near Hialeah and three people "stepped out of the vehicle with assault rifles and handguns and started firing indiscriminately into the crowd," Ramirez said.
A Miami-Dade officer covers a body outside a club that was rented out for a concert.
"The result is 20 to 25 victims with gunshot injury wounds, and two deceased on the scene," he said.
Five victims were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. Two of them are in critical condition, according to hospital spokesperson Kerting Baldwin.
