Why no blanket moratorium, asks Umno man |

PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has questioned the limited scope of the loan moratorium given under the Pemerkasa economic stimulus package announced yesterday.
He said the decision not to make it a blanket loan moratorium for all was very disappointing.
“This is the problem when a former banker becomes the finance minister. He still favours the banks, when they are already making so much profit during this pandemic,” Puad said on Facebook.
He said some of those allowed to enjoy the loan moratorium were big companies, multinational companies and millionaires.
A RM40 billion aid package was announced last night to help people and businesses through the national lockdown which starts today.
In a televised address, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the relief package, named Pemerkasa Plus, involves RM5 billion in direct fiscal injection.
Muhyiddin said borrowers may choose to take up the moratorium or pay back their loans at a 50% lowered rate over six months. This will involve some five million people and a sum totalling RM30 million.

SINGAPORE - The B1617 Covid-19 variant has infiltrated over 50 countries, outcompeted other strains and continues to infect. It will also not be the last time the virus will mutate, experts cautioned.
But what makes this strain, first discovered in India, so good at spreading?
Dr Sebastian Maurer-Stroh, virus expert and executive director of the Bioinformatics Institute at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, points out four features that the B1617 strain has in common with successful virus strains.
He uses one of the three versions of the B1617 strain - the second B16172 version - to show what makes this virus different. B16172 has appeared to overtake B16171 in local cases as well as those reported globally. The third version, B16173, is rare.
First, a little primer on coronavirus biology. What you see in the diagram below is the spike protein of a coronavirus - the little spikes that give the virus its distinctive shape.

In a Code Blue report (Health Care and Human Rights) vaccine coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin explains, using Oxford logic, why Sarawak must be vaccinated first so it can hold its state elections safely. This is despite Selangor reporting three times more Covid-19 deaths than Sarawak in May.
According to the report, the federal government said it is prioritising Sarawak for Covid-19 vaccination to be the first state to complete its inoculation drive due to the impending state elections. According to Khairy, Sarawak will receive 4.4 million doses of two-dose Covid-19 vaccines to inoculate its entire 2.2 million adult population by the end of August, at an estimated 45,000 daily shots to the arm.
Good luck to Khairy, knowing the geography of Sarawak, its terrain and topography. You will also need to climb trees like the Sabah student to gain internet connection. Even in urban areas where you have registered with MySejahtera, you will be left wondering what is actually happening when you don’t get a call despite being in the vulnerable age group.
From May 1 to May 27, however, Sarawak reported 94 Covid-19 deaths, more than three times fewer than Selangor’s 309 fatalities. Despite the death statistics, Khairy explained that Sarawak is required by law to hold its state elections within 60 days should the Emergency Ordinance in the country end on August 1 as scheduled.

PETALING JAYA: The Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project has run into objections from an unlikely source – Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar of PKR.
She is now urging Putrajaya and Penang to cancel the project for three man-made islands and instead focus efforts on containing the pandemic, protecting the environment and ecosystem as well as the source of income of Penang fishermen.
She said that she and party colleagues had initially supported the project but she started to be more apprehensive when the Penang Transport Master Plan was changed to include a mega highway, LRT, monorail, Skycab and involved land reclamation.
She said it was clear that the PSR had become focused on revenue and the speculative sale of property, sidelining the importance of the environment and a balanced ecosystem.
“We must review the PSR with protecting the environment and welfare of citizens as our priority. The losses and risks in this project far exceed the possibility of profit for the state and its people,” she said.
