Report: Malaysia among top six countries where thousands of tree species at risk of extinction

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 — Almost a third of the world's tree species are at risk of extinction, while hundreds are on the brink of being wiped out, according to a landmark report published by Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) on Wednesday.

According to the State of the World's Trees report 17,500 tree species — some 30 per cent of the total — are a risk of extinction, while 440 species have fewer than 50 individuals left in the wild.

Overall the number of threatened tree species is double the number of threatened mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles combined, the report said.

EXCLUSIVE: Stay in Afghanistan, we guarantee rights of minorities, women: Taliban

KUALA LUMPUR – The Taliban leadership, whose forces reassumed power in Afghanistan last month, has given its assurance that the rights of minority communities and women will be guaranteed under its rule.

Speaking to The Vibes, Taliban spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi claimed that religious minorities had led peaceful lives during the organisation’s previous rule in Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001.

He urged Afghans to stay in the country, in view of the rate at which people have tried to flee the country. The situation, which includes scenes of utter panic at the Kabul International Airport, has sparked worries of a brain drain.

“The rights of all minorities have and will continue to be protected and guaranteed,” he said.

“These minorities lived a peaceful life during our previous rule and were forced out of their homes during the American occupation and its installed democratic regime.

“We urge all Afghans to return to their homes and assist in rebuilding their homeland,” Qahar said in response to The Vibes.

Qahar was also asked if women would be allowed to become political leaders and even represent their country in sports under Taliban rule.

It was pointed out to him that Malaysia, a country with Islam as its official religion, features minorities and women in the executive branch of government.

“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan will give all rights to women that have been guaranteed by Islam, including their right to work, education, health and in every other space,” he replied.

MB must explain degazettement to PKR leaders, says Anwar
Posted by: superadmin - 08-31-2021, 07:47 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari has been asked to give a “detailed explanation” about the state government’s decision to approve the degazettement of the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve for development purposes, Anwar Ibrahim said today.

In a statement, the PKR president said Amirudin will have to explain why such a decision was made when he attends a meeting of party leaders tomorrow.

Noting that the Selangor state assembly had rejected the proposal last year, Anwar emphasised that PKR was also not informed of the decision. Amirudin is the Selangor PKR chief.

“The PKR leadership had informed the menteri besar to cancel the matter since last year,” Anwar said.

  Taliban celebrates defeating America

KABUL – The Taliban joyously fired guns into the air and offered words of reconciliation today, as it celebrated defeating the United States and returning to power after two decades of war that devastated Afghanistan.

The last of 6,000 US troops who oversaw a desperate evacuation effort flew out of Kabul airport last night, ending the war that has diminished the US’ status as a superpower.

Taliban fighters quickly swept into the airport and fired weapons into the sky in jubilation, an astonishing return after US forces invaded in 2001 and toppled the hard-line Islamists for supporting al-Qaeda.

“Congratulations to Afghanistan... this victory belongs to us all,” Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told reporters hours later from the runway of the airport.

Mujahid said the Taliban’s victory is a “lesson for other invaders”.

However, the Taliban has repeatedly promised a more tolerant and open brand of rule compared with its first stint in power, and Mujahid continued that theme.

“We want to have good relations with the US and the world. We welcome good diplomatic relations with them all,” he said.

Many Afghans are terrified of a repeat of the Taliban’s initial rule from 1996-2001, which was infamous for its treatment of girls and women, as well as a brutal justice system.

WTO panel to examine China compliance with grain import tariff ruling
Posted by: superadmin - 08-31-2021, 04:49 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

GENEVA – The World Trade Organisation agreed yesterday to a request from Beijing to evaluate China’s compliance with a ruling faulting it for unfair restrictions on imports of American grain.

The decision by the WTO’s Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) to establish an expert panel to determine whether China complied with a 2019 ruling marks the latest twist in a long-running dispute between the world’s two largest economies.

Back in December 2016, the administration of then US president Barack Obama filed a complaint with the global trade body over what it claimed were illegal Chinese restrictions on imports of American rice, wheat and corn, describing China’s use of the so-called tariff-rate quota (TRQ) system as “opaque and unpredictable”.
