Swedish superstars ABBA set to unveil 'sensational' musical comeback
Posted by: superadmin - 09-02-2021, 01:31 PM - Forum: Celebreties News - No Replies

LONDON – They famously vowed never to reform, to the disappointment of their legions of fans. But nearly four decades after disbanding, Swedish superstars ABBA were on Thursday expected to announce a "sensational comeback" collaboration.

Almost as famous for their over-the-top sparkly outfits as their music, the group notched up over 400 million album sales over 50 years.

They enjoyed phenomenal success with a string of chart hits in the 1970s and early 1980s after winning Eurovision in 1974 with 'Waterloo'.

Since parting ways in 1982 they have steadfastly resisted all offers to work together as a foursome again.

But later on Thursday they are expected to delight fans with news on a fresh collaboration.

The now septuagenarian stars of pop classics such as 'Dancing Queen', 'The Winner Takes It All' and 'Take a Chance on Me', said they will make an "historic" announcement at 5.45pm UK time.

Details are still under wraps, but the group is expected to announce the release of their first new songs since the 1980s and the launch of a new theatrical show in which they will perform as hologram 'Abbatars'.

Last week, the group – Anni-Frid Lyngstad, 75, Agnetha Faltskog, 71, Bjorn Ulvaeus, 76, and Benny Andersson, 74 – announced on Twitter: "Thank you for waiting, the journey is about to begin."

PAS welcomes DAP’s backing of anti-hopping law
Posted by: superadmin - 09-01-2021, 08:56 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: PAS welcomes DAP’s willingness to support an anti-hopping law, which will require a constitutional amendment requiring two-thirds support in Parliament.

Its information chief Kamaruzaman Mohamad said the party fundamentally agreed with the anti-hopping law, saying it would stabilise national politics.

He said the Kelantan state assembly and the PAS-led state administration had also amended the state constitution and passed an anti-hopping law that came into force retrospectively since November 1990.

“We’ve seen how this (party-hopping) can harm national politics. Under the current circumstances, PAS welcomes any cooperation to create a stable political environment, even with opposition parties,” he said according to a report by Berita Harian.

Yesterday, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said his party was willing to work with the government to implement institutional reforms, particularly in amending the Constitution to enact an anti-party-hopping law.

Bersih backs recall elections, citing ‘Sheraton Move’ and fall of govts
Posted by: superadmin - 09-01-2021, 07:23 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Bersih 2.0 is backing a proposal by an MP for recall elections to be held, citing the series of party-hopping that led to two government changes in the past three years.

The electoral reform group said Bersatu’s previous decision to accept defectors from Umno and the subsequent “Sheraton Move”, which led to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government, saw the people and voters becoming mere spectators.

They were powerless “to make the elected representatives respect the mandate given to them in the last general election”, Bersih said.

Elected representatives who jumped ship are seen to have no firm stance but as having acted in their own personal or party interests, it said.

“This will erode the people’s trust in the election process and a lower turnout if people continue to be left powerless to make their elected representatives accountable to the voters,” it said in a statement.

Malaysia's Opposition Strategy to Return to Power
Posted by: superadmin - 09-01-2021, 05:35 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: https%3A%2F%2Fbucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-43...00x550.gif]

Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who formed Malaysia’s new government without the benefit of election – as his predecessor did – may have a honeymoon period with an exhausted electorate hoping for political peace, but how long that will last is debatable. Sabri, himself under quarantine after having come in contact with a constituent infected with Covid-19, faces a pandemic that shows no sign of abating, with more than 300,000 cases in the past two weeks and with deaths rising by 16 percent over that period.

During the past few months of Covid-necessitated movement restrictions, Malaysians have felt abandoned by the government, particularly as the factions fought for power. The accompanying economic downturn, with forecasts again having been downgraded, will favor the out-of-power Pakatan Harapan government, especially if the current government doesn’t handle it better than the former one.

Chances are it won’t, as the Sabri ministry is essentially the same as the former Muhyiddin ministry. Sabri has retained 31 ministers and 38 deputy ones, including four senior posts created by Muhyiddin to keep factions in his Malay-majority government happy.

Nonetheless, Sabri’s reconstituted government should continue through to the next general election, designated GE15, due by July 2023, or perhaps even earlier. As with Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional government, Sabri was appointed by the king to rule in lieu of an election.

This means the only alternative for Pakatan Harapan, which took power in 2018 as a reform movement only to lose it again through missteps and the precipitous resignation of its leader, Mahathir Mohamad, is to settle into being the opposition, presenting itself as a credible alternative government and developing an effective shadow cabinet, both to prepare it to lead by developing policy and to winnow out its less-effective leaders.

Pakatan Harapan currently has 105 MPs, just seven short of a majority that would enable it to once again form a government. Before it lost power, the coalition had a comfortable working majority in parliament. The big question is how many constituencies it could pick up in the next general election or GE15.

Who besides Dr Mahathir was a 2-time PM?
Posted by: superadmin - 09-01-2021, 05:14 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

GEORGE TOWN – Did you know that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was not the only leader who served as prime minister twice?

It was in 1959 that first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra al-Haj resigned for four months and his deputy, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, took over as prime minister, before the former assumed premiership again.

Abdul Razak would later serve as prime minister again in 1970 until his death in 1976.

This officially makes Tunku Abdul Rahman Malaysia’s first and third prime minister, and Abdul Razak the country's second and fourth.

Umno veteran and long-time president of Penang Malay Association Tan Sri Mohd Yussof Latiff said that the younger generation are unaware of this fact as history has chosen to forget this interesting anecdote in the country’s history.

“In 1959, just before our first formal general election as a sovereign nation in August, our beloved Tunku was faced with a double dilemma as the Alliance Party was rocked by two great demands.

“One was the demand by the Malay Teachers Association to withdraw support if the Alliance Party did not immediately use Bahasa Melayu as the main medium of instruction in schools.

“Second was a threat by MCA to pull out of the government if Tunku did not allow them to contest in 40 seats for the election.

“The party was then only given 38 seats and altogether, there were 104 parliamentary seats up for grabs.

“Unable to offer solutions to the issues, Tunku chose an honourable approach that he would resign as prime minister and focus 100% on strengthening the alliance politically.

“He decided to live in a van for months and traversed the country campaigning for the alliance before the election in August,” said Yussof, 91, who was also former secretary to Penang’s first two chief ministers – Tan Sri Wong Pow Nee and Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu.

TMJ tells Syed Saddiq to ‘jump off KLCC without a parachute’ in latest roast
Posted by: superadmin - 09-01-2021, 05:09 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has done little to hide his distaste for Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman in the past, but his latest post on Instagram takes the cake.

In a brief caption posted on his account late last night, Tunku Ismail suggested that the only way the Muda leader would get his attention is if he jumped off the Petronas Twin Towers without a parachute.

He was responding to a question from one of his followers on what Syed Saddiq has to do to capture his attention.

“Go jump off KLCC without a parachute,” his reply read.

The question posed to him was one of dozens that Tunku Ismail responded to on Instagram, after he conducted a question-and-answer session on his account last night.

The Vibes has reached out to Syed Saddiq for comments, but has yet to receive a response.

Simple, clear SOPs can help economic recovery, govt told
Posted by: superadmin - 09-01-2021, 11:46 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: pekerja-kilang-sabah-bernama-2022021.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: An Umno official has urged the government to simplify the SOPs for businesses and make them clear, now that an increasing number of businesses are beginning to reopen.

Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan, noting reports that the global supply chain would be disrupted until next year, said the government should adjust its policies to reduce the harm this could cause to Malaysia’s economic recovery.

He told FMT he believed the SOPs in place for the resumption of business activities would soon replace vaccinations as the key factor in the recovery.

“Our vaccination rates are climbing steadily and, with Khairy Jamaluddin back in charge, one can assume minimal disruptions to the plans,” he said.

GPs keen on Ivermectin trials told to seek research outfit’s advice
Posted by: superadmin - 09-01-2021, 11:43 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The government has told private doctors to seek the advice of Clinical Research Malaysia (CRM) if they are interested in conducting clinical trials on Ivermectin, a controversial drug touted as a cure for Covid-19.

CRM, which is a one-stop centre to facilitate such research, is a company established by the health ministry.

National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) director Dr Roshayati Mohamad Sani said CRM would help general practitioners (GPs) determine the feasibility of clinical trials.

For regulatory requirements, they must refer to the Malaysian Guidelines for the Application of Clinical Trial Import Licence (CTIL) and Clinical Trial Exemption (CTX), she said.

The guidelines can be downloaded from the NPRA website.

Azalina to send notice of motion to table Recall Bill
Posted by: superadmin - 09-01-2021, 11:37 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Former deputy Dewan Rakyat speaker Azalina Othman Said plans to send a notice of motion to the Dewan Rakyat speaker to table a Recall Bill.

In a statement today, the Pengerang MP hoped the motion will be the “starting point” to introduce recall elections during the upcoming Parliamentary sitting.

“In addition, I also intend to propose the establishment of a ‘Caucus on Parliamentary Reform and Multi-Party Democracy’ among interested MPs,” said the former law minister.

“This is to strengthen the institution of Parliament in Malaysia and uphold parliamentary democracy in our country.”

She added that she was “very pleased” with the discussions between the government, the opposition bloc and the independent bloc to introduce a law to prevent party hopping.
