SYDNEY: New Australian Covid-19 cases dipped on Sunday as testing slowed over a holiday weekend, but remained well over 30,000 and hospitalisations rose further in New South Wales as concerns grow about potential strains on the national health system.
Newly diagnosed cases in New South Wales, the most populous state, dropped to 18,278 from 22,577 the day before as the number of tests conducted on New Year’s Day dropped by a quarter, health department figures showed.
But hospitalisations, which authorities have signalled is a figure they are more closely monitoring than total case numbers as they shift towards living with the virus, jumped by 18% to 1,066.
In Victoria, daily case numbers remained above 7,000 and Queensland reported a record 3,587 new cases.
“As we enter a new year, we are entering a new battle against Covid-19,” Queensland state Treasurer Cameron Dick said.

Looking back on 2021, China remains ‘stabilizer’ of the world |

As the year 2021 comes to an end, the pandemic and unprecedented changes in a century have become the most profound footnotes of the year. In a sense, 2021 has "replicated" the difficulties and pressures the world had undergone in 2020, but it has also shown more complexities. Delta and Omicron, the two novel coronavirus mutant strains, have created new shocks and brought about new tests for the world, the Capitol riots, the "Kabul moment," resurgence of the Cold War mentality and other turmoil have a far-reaching impact, while the global economic recovery has been greatly dragged down by the global supply chain crisis… "What is wrong with the world, and what shall we do?" Facing this question of the age, people's search for an answer has become even more urgent.
For China, 2021 was a landmark year. As pointed out at the annual Central Economic Work Conference held recently, we solemnly celebrate the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, have fulfilled the first centenary goal, and are embarking on a new journey toward the second. We have calmly dealt with the changes over a century and the pandemic of the century, constructed new development patterns and made new strides. New results have been achieved in high-quality development, and a good start has been made for the 14th Five-Year Plan. China has broken new ground in its diplomatic endeavors amid profound global changes and turned crises into opportunities. While it concentrates on managing its own affairs well, China has also provided valuable stability to the world.

2022 will be the biggest year for the metaverse so far |

- 2022 is poised to be the biggest year for “the metaverse,” or software and hardware that allow users to play or work in virtual 3D spaces.
- Meta, Apple, Microsoft and Google all are gearing up to release new products.
- Apple is reportedly expected to announce a high-end headset that mixes virtual reality and augmented reality.
2022 is poised to be the biggest year yet for “the metaverse,” as Facebook parent Meta, Apple, Microsoft and Google gear up to release new hardware products and software services in what so far has been a niche market for early adopters.
The “metaverse” describes software and hardware that allow users to play or work in virtual 3-D spaces, or pull in information from the internet and integrate it with the real world in real time. For now, the metaverse might be accessed through a smartphone, but eventually, it will be experienced through advanced virtual reality or augmented reality headsets, backers say.
Big Tech companies are betting that gadgets that transport their users into enhanced or imaginary worlds will open up the biggest new market in software since Apple introduced the touchscreen smartphone in 2007. If the metaverse takes off, then perhaps everyone who has a smartphone today will also have a pair of computer glasses or a VR headset in a few years.

Nothing less than royal inquiry needed on MACC fiasco: ex-chief adviser |

KUALA LUMPUR – The whole debacle surrounding the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and allegations against its top leaders require nothing less than the attention of a royal commission of inquiry (RCI).
This is according to MACC advisory board former chairman Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim, who is urging for an immediate and independent probe into the anti-graft body.
Speaking with The Vibes, Aziz said the recent allegations of conflict of interest involving chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki made by renowned economist Prof Edmund Terence Gomez have called into question the credibility of the body.
As such, he said the RCI is necessary in order to clear the good name of the commission and identify if there were instances of impropriety.
“First of all, I think Gomez should make a police report if he believes there is a possibility of a cover up within the MACC,” he said yesterday.

Sinovac booster can activate cellular immunity against Omicron |

KUALA LUMPUR – Preliminary results of a study conducted by the Pontifical Catholic University in Chile (UC) showed that the Covid-19 Sinovac vaccine booster dose could activate cellular immunity against the Omicron variant, on subjects who were given two doses of the same vaccine previously.
The objective of the study led by Millennium Institute on Immunology and Immunotherapy director Prof Dr Alexis M. Kalergis, was to assess whether the immunity activated by the Sinovac vaccine booster dose can recognise the Omicron variant.
Dr Alexis, in a statement released by Pharmaniaga today, said those who have received the Covid-19 Sinovac vaccine booster dose had T cell levels that are activated against the Omicron variant in a similar way to the original strain.
“This shows that the vaccine contains antigens that are found in the Omicron variant. The results show that when T lymphocytes come in contact with the Omicron variant, they are able to produce gamma interferon, which is capable of killing the dangerous virus,” he said.
Meanwhile, UC’s Academic and Scientific director for the CoronaVac Scientific-Clinical Study in Chile, Dr Susan Bueno said, it was most likely that partial recognition of these variants had contributed to the effectiveness of the vaccine among the population, despite the variants being widespread in Chile.

Muda registration, Undi18 may not affect GE15, say analysts |

PETALING JAYA: Analysts expect little to change in the political landscape even with the registration of Muda as a political party and the gazetting of Undi18 and automatic voter registration.
Former Universiti Teknologi Malaysia lecturer Azmi Hassan said Muda was not strong enough to go it alone in the next general election and Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said the new young voters would not necessarily be progressive.
“It will be an uphill battle for Muda to make an impact,” Azmi told FMT.
“The new party needs to be affiliated with a seasoned political party or an experienced politician.”
He suggested Warisan as an option, saying: “The Sabah-based party is eager to spread its wings to the peninsula. Maybe Muda and Warisan can work together. After all, Warisan has many experienced politicians.”

PETALING JAYA: With seat talks going sour, the tension between PAS and Umno is building up in Kedah, Terengganu and Kelantan.
Although some Umno leaders at federal level are keen on continuing to work with PAS, a political analyst claims he has information that the story is different at the grassroots level.
“At the state level, there are challenges,” said Mohd Azizuddin Sani of Universiti Utara Malaysia. “Umno grassroots members in the three states do not want to share seats with PAS, and PAS wants more seats as it feels these are its stronghold states.”
He told FMT discussions in Terengganu had turned hostile. “Neither side is willing to give in. Both are demanding more seats and the talks are likely to fail.”
In Kedah and Kelantan as well, there had been no progress in the seat talks, he said.
Kelantan PAS is said to be meeting the state Umno leadership on Jan 22 to discuss cooperation for the next general election.

'No genocide in Xinjiang,' envoys, scholars reaffirm during press conference by Xinjiang govt, Chinese Embassy in UK
Diplomats, regional officials, family members of terror attack victims and regional and foreign scholars attended a press conference held jointly by the Xinjiang regional government and Chinese Embassy to the UK recently to exposed lies and refuted rumors made by anti-China forces on the region.
More than five years ago, many people in Xinjiang worried that terrorist attacks may occur at any time, with the region suffering from a history of attacks. But currently, all people in the Xinjiang region are living happy and stable lives and are confident about the future, Yang Xiaoguang, Minister of the Chinese Embassy to the UK said at the online press conference on December 29.
Yang noted that in 2020, Xinjiang welcomed 158 million tourists which means thousands of people had witnessed the development of the region with their own eyes and the moments they recorded in Xinjiang on their cameras showed that accusations made by anti-China forces are groundless.
"There is no genocide in Xinjiang… There is no forced labor in the region," Yang said, noting that the population of Uygurs increased 3.23 times over the past seven decades.
Echoed with the Chinese envoy, Graham Perry, a British solicitor and international arbitrator who also attended the online press conference said that there is no "oppression" of Uygurs in Xinjiang, nor is there any genocide.
