NEW YORK – Malaysia is preparing to reap from a new “window of opportunity” posed by multinational companies that are “expanding” certain operations from China due to recently imposed trade restrictions impacting them there.
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz today said two major firms related to the electrical and electronics (E&E) sector have confirmed plans to invest in Malaysia.
“Quite a number of companies that are involved at the front-end, and not just back-end of E&E operations, are ‘expanding’ (from China) to realign their supply chains,” he said after meeting some companies’ representative here today.
“Malaysia is seen as a friendly country. So we are benefitting from this,” he said to Malaysian editors and journalists who are in New York to cover the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this week.

PETALING JAYA – The food production crisis and the high price of essentials plaguing the country are due to the changing climate and the high cost of importing fertilisers and other farming essentials.
Farmer Zaheer Zechariah said the most profitable time to plant is from January to September, but heavy rains and cloud cover have an impact on the yields.
He said for him, the present weather conditions had hurt his farm’s yield, compared to the last one to three years ago when the farm yield had been much higher.
“The present government is not to be blamed for the problems faced by farmers today. Governments over the last nine years had been warned about global warming but had ignored it.
“They had neither prepared farmers nor taken proactive measures to deal with the problem.”
He said rice supply is now becoming an issue as India has banned its exports and Vietnam is slowly cutting down on its exports.
He added all this was due to the unpredictable weather pattern, which is hurting yield and production.

PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s role as an adviser to a grouping of four PAS-led states will not have any bearing on Muhyiddin Yassin’s standing as Perikatan Nasional chairman, analysts said.
Akademi Nusantara’s Azmi Hassan said Mahathir would merely be an economic adviser to the group, known as the “state government four” or “SG4”.
This, he said, would be similar to the role played by Anwar Ibrahim in the Selangor government previously.
Azmi believes PAS merely wants to use the former prime minister to its benefit to give the state governments of Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, which it governs, some economic credence and clout.

PETALING JAYA: A former deputy health minister has backed the establishment of a regulatory body to oversee and manage reimbursements provided by health insurance companies.
Dr Lee Boon Chye said the creation of such an authority could effectively resolve arbitration disputes and ensure that companies conduct themselves properly.
“There should ideally be a regulatory authority to oversee the conduct of managed care organisations (MCO) so that if there are any grievances, that authority can act as an arbitrator to mediate payment disputes,” he told FMT.
“This authority should also play a role in ensuring that the MCOs’ conduct is ethical and transparent, and not arbitrary.”

- The stem cell-based bio-artificial liver has been approved for clinical trials to help liver patients remove toxins from their blood
- Promising technology could be on the verge of a breakthrough in commercial use, report says
Chinese authorities have given the green light for clinical trials of a stem cell-based artificial liver – a development that could help millions of people battling liver failure.
A Chinese team has created a bioreactor for a bio-artificial liver – a device outside the body that performs the liver’s job of detoxification and synthesising proteins and chemicals necessary for digestion and growth.
Blood flows through the bioreactor system, which uses a hollow fibre membrane to grow stem cells and essential substances, which are then introduced to a patient’s bloodstream and help them regenerate tissue and suppress liver damage caused by inflammation.

WHILE PAS seems excited about the creation of a ‘State-Government 4’ or SG4 uniting the four states run by the Islamic party with former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as adviser, many are expressing their disagreement with these plans.
Some are saying it is divisive and will create an entity that will supersede the role and interests of the federal government in these states.
According to Scoop, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Razak Faculty of Technology & Informatics lecturer Associate Prof Mazlan Ali said the formation of this grouping is in opposition to the Federal government. It is a move that will isolate the four states altogether and also jeopardise relations with Putrajaya.
Adding to the intensity of the debate is the role that Mahathir is supposed to play in the SG4. The PAS is saying Dr Mahathir’s extensive experience can help the four states under the auspices of Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the investment sector.
