JOHOR BARU – The unity government will not tolerate any attempts to incite the people to cause division among the races, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said he was not afraid and was open to criticism, but inciting the public to create conflict in the country’s multiracial society was not acceptable.
“I do not agree that the Sedition Act should be used against those who criticise the prime minister and the government, but we will not tolerate anyone who tries to incite or slander to the point of touching on the 3R (rulers, race, religion) issue... let the police take action.
“You can criticise anything and anyone... but if you use sentiments, incite Malays to hate Chinese, incite people to use religion to accuse others of infidelity... I stress that I will not tolerate it,” he said.
Anwar was speaking at the Madani Unity Mega Ceramah held in conjunction with the Pulai parliamentary by-election at Taman Uda Utama, Perling, last night.

THE by-elections of the Pulai parliament and the Simpang Jeram state legislative assembly are turning into a big test for Pakatan Harapan (PH) and the Barisan Nasional (BN) but once again, it is all about the DAP.
It is a very well-crafted campaign that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) is leading against the DAP and its political struggles.
The UMNO leadership’s statement that DAP, which is also a component of PH, has changed and become more moderate is claimed by the Bersatu leader to be better news than it looks.
Now, it is for the Bersatu vice-president Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin to enter the fray. He stated that DAP was still acting as a ‘big brother’ who did not pay attention to the recommendations of the coalition partners in maintaining the party’s slogan ‘Malaysia for Malaysians’.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan will be able to retain the Simpang Jeram state seat in the by-election next Saturday, but with a slim majority, an academic said.
Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia said based on research he conducted between Aug 29 and 31, a little over 50% of the 600 voters he met in the constituency would back the coalition’s candidate, Nazri Abdul Rahman.
Some 19.83% of respondents meanwhile said they would not vote for Nazri, who is deputy chief of Amanah’s Bakri division.
There are about 40,379 registered voters in the constituency.
“PH will win the seat with a slim majority, on the assumption that many of the outstation voters and young voters would support Perikatan Nasional,” he told FMT, adding that his research did not include outstation voters.

PETALING JAYA: Police have decided to postpone taking a statement from PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang over a speech in which he allegedly questioned the Pardons Board.
Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain confirmed the matter with Utusan Malaysia. He said police were told Hadi was unwell.
“The police officer was informed by Hadi’s aide that Hadi was still unwell and asked for the questioning to be deferred,” he was quoted as saying.
Hadi was scheduled to have his statement taken at his office this evening.
On Monday, it was reported that Hadi was being investigated under the Sedition Act after he allegedly questioned the Pardons Board’s authority to pardon convicted criminals.

IN THE last week, netizens were quick to react to a public performance by a group of belly dancers in the popular shopping haven of Bukit Bintang.
The matters seem to have been resolved as the authorities have shut down the shop that commissioned the dancers as they were foreigners who did not have the necessary paperwork to run a business.
But the deeper underlying issue is how this performance have sparked outrage with sensationalist headlines in local media labelling the dancers as being “partially nude”. Many netizens have complained that such a performance was entirely inappropriate for a Muslim country, sparking again the sensitive issue of what is permissible dress code in this country.

PETALING JAYA: Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany) has called out the higher education ministry for its alleged moral policing role in the newly proposed “Guidelines for Entertainment Activities (Concerts) in Higher Education Institutions”.
The student body said the ministry is trying to impose religious governance on campuses.
“The contents of these guidelines are extremely conservative, prohibiting actions such as mixed seating for males and females and artistes wearing shorts (during performances),” it said in a statement.
It said that based on the contents of the guidelines, “it can be seen that a conservative wave has made its way into university campuses”.
“Surprisingly, it is not led by Perikatan Nasional, but rather by the unity government, which claimed to be ‘progressive’ in the past elections,” it said.
