“Bringing back GST: That would be highly irresponsible!”
Posted by: superadmin - 09-18-2023, 09:02 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

RECENTLY, a spate of announcements and opinion pieces have surfaced in the mainstream media supporting the reintroduction of the goods and services tax (GST).

The GST was repealed in June 2018.

But once again, this option is being touted as the most sensible and responsible thing to do given the dire circumstances. The Federal government’s deficit has ballooned to about RM100 bil per year. And total federal debt (excluding contingent liabilities) has soared to RM1.2 tril.

Proponents of the GST argue this consumption tax will cut the government’s deficit. They also believe this tax will convince investors that the government is being fiscally prudent and so result in more investments flowing into the country.

But Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) disagrees. We campaigned strongly against the GST in 2011-2013 because it is a regressive tax. Nothing that has happened over the past 10 years alters this fact.

China to back New Industrial Master Plan 2030: PM
Posted by: superadmin - 09-18-2023, 08:13 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

[Image: anwar_ibrahim_asean_china_expo_bernama_pic.png]

NANNING – China will support the government's efforts to ensure that the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) would be a success, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar, who is also finance minister, said China is supportive of the proposed Asian Monetary Fund (AMF) in terms of being the region’s lender of last resort in the event of a financial crisis.

“Chinese leaders have high regards for and support Malaysia Madani and the AMF,” he said after meeting Chinese Premier Li Qiang today.

Anwar said this in today’s press pointers issued today in conjunction with his working visit to attend the 20th China-Asean Expo.

The prime minister said there is significant potential for Asean-Plus 3 countries, which includes China, to work towards the ideals envisioned under the AMF that was proposed after the Asian Financial Crisis.

Losing the race to a discarded state
Posted by: superadmin - 09-17-2023, 07:49 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

When we marked Malaysia’s 60th year as a federation yesterday, we would not have been faulted for wondering how we got to where we are today.

Of course many of us were not there to witness the historic event, but we won’t be too far off the mark to assume that everyone was full of hope for their new country.

But now, as we re-examine our place in the country we call home, some of us cannot help but ponder how things have gone so wrong.

Let’s not even talk about the racial divide and religious differences that have come to define us.

Crowd chants “Reformati” and “Dakwa Zahid” at PN gathering
Posted by: superadmin - 09-16-2023, 08:07 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: afbc3422-himpunan-tolak-zahid-16923.jpg]

SOME 500 people congregated at the Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru in Kuala Lumpur for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) gathering to protest against the freeing of Deputy Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi from 47 court cases.

PN activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin or Chegubard and Bersatu’s Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz addressed the crowd that was chanting “Dakwa Zahid” (charge Zahid) and “Reformati” (Reformasi has died). Some in the crowd were carrying placards of “dakwa Zahid” and chanting “tolak Zahid”.

Contrary to what was thought earlier, the former UMNO Putrajaya deputy chief Tun Faisal Ismail told the crowd there is “no rally today, we are just gathering to voice our views”.

They are unhappy that Zahid was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) earlier this month. The PN leaders then marched to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters to lodge a report asking for Zahid to be charged again. They were shouting “Tolak Zahid!”, “Dakwa Zahid!”, “Reformati!”, and “Beras dah mahal! (rice is expensive)”.

Tales of two PMs: Building legacy, destroying legacy
Posted by: superadmin - 09-16-2023, 01:40 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 6a581c8f-anwar-ibrahim-190620-fmt-2.webp]

Letter to editor

IT’S a sheer waste that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad built his legacy for 22 years and 22 months but only to see it destroyed towards the tail-end of his life.

While his nemesis Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been building his own legacy as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia (PMX), Dr Mahathir’s own legacy is now in tatters largely due to his own doings.

Rather than being respected as a statesman, the former twice premier has hurled insults on the Malay rulers and pitted one race against another.

He should realise that he is no longer in power like before and he too can be subject to sedition charges like any other ordinary citizens. What he did recently cannot be easily excused.

If he had been wiser for his age, the now chief advocate of Proklamasi Melayu should have lived a quiet life. He should at least take the cue from former inspector-general of police (IGP) Tan Sri Rahim Noor who despite being instrumental in bashing up Anwar, is spared the rod.

What happened? Ex-Klang MP chides govt for reform agenda U-turns
Posted by: superadmin - 09-16-2023, 01:34 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA – “It’s Malaysia Day, but it seems like we are undoing our reform agenda, backtracking on election promises, and worse, contributing to a shrinking democratic space in the country.”

These were the words of former Klang MP Charles Santiago, who said it is difficult for the people to recover from the “stinging effect” of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s case where the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) dropped all 47 charges.

“The eleven reasons given by the AGC weren’t worth the paper it was written on.

“This case is of public interest…why is the 200-page representation paper by Zahid’s lawyers not made public?” he asked.

Santiago also said the delay by the AGC in filing for an appeal in the case of Datuk Seri Najib Razak and 1MDB’s ex-CEO Arul Kanda Kandasamy raised several questions.

In Malaysia, love overpowers negativity, says Yuna
Posted by: superadmin - 09-16-2023, 09:22 AM - Forum: Inspiring Stories - Replies (97)

PETALING JAYA: In 2011, local singer Yuna moved to the United States to further her music career. More than a decade may have passed, but the Kedah-born performer still holds her Malaysian roots close to her heart.

Some people prefer not to talk much about their origins, mostly to fit in – Yuna, however, wears her heritage as a badge of pride.

“It’s everything to me. The essence in me is Malaysian. Even though I live in Los Angeles, whenever I walk into a recording room, it’s ‘a Malaysian walks in’. I just immediately talk about food, my country, my culture. I’m like a walking billboard for ‘Malaysia Truly Asia’ everywhere I go,” Yuna told FMT Lifestyle with a laugh.
