PAS needs Samsuri’s moderate image in parliament, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 10-29-2023, 09:34 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: PAS should field Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar for the Kemaman parliamentary by-election as the party needs the voice of a technocrat in the Dewan Rakyat, an analyst said.

Ahmad Fauzi Abdul Hamid of Universiti Sains Malaysia said Samsuri’s academic background would allow PAS to project a non-religious perspective in Parliament.

The political scientist also said election to a federal seat would prepare the PAS vice-president for service at federal level should the party form a government in the future.

Pushing for Najib’s release will weaken PH, say leaders
Posted by: superadmin - 10-28-2023, 08:06 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Any continuing push for Najib Razak’s release from prison will likely weaken support for Pakatan Harapan, a DAP leader said.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the leader said any attempt by PH to secure a pardon for the jailed former prime minister will backfire on the coalition and weaken the support of the non-Malays.

“The middle-class Malays who supported PH will also retreat if we actually attempt to secure a pardon for him,” said the leader.

He added that those who continue to support PH in future elections may end up doing so for the wrong reasons.

“People will vote for you not because they have hope in you, but because they just don’t want PAS.

Stop Palestine solidarity events in schools, says parents group
Posted by: superadmin - 10-28-2023, 08:03 AM - Forum: Educations - Replies (1)

PETALING JAYA: The government has been urged to stop holding Palestine solidarity programmes in schools following reports of students and teachers carrying toy guns at the events.

Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE) chairman Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim said there were concerns over the appropriateness of such programmes in schools.

She said the photos and videos of children carrying guns were an example of what could go wrong with such events.

One 55-second video that went viral showed what appeared to be a man pointing a toy rifle at students while leading a group of teachers waving Palestinian flags into an assembly.

There were also photos of children at a separate school wearing bandanas bearing the words “Save Palestine” and carrying toy guns.

Nine rulers to elect 17th king of Malaysia today

KUALA LUMPUR – The Conference of Rulers will convene a special meeting today to elect the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The special meeting, which is set to start at 10 am at Istana Negara, will see nine Malay Rulers casting their votes to elect not just a new Yang di-Pertuan Agong, but also a new Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The special meeting is called as Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah’s reign as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong will come to an end on Jan 30 next year.

Al-Sultan Abdullah ascended the federal throne on Jan 31, 2019, after being elected to hold the office of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the Conference of Rulers’ special meeting on Jan 24 of the same year.

Penang DAP’s leadership spat shameful, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 10-26-2023, 09:13 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: With the overwhelming support shown for DAP in Penang in the recent state election, questions are being asked whether its leaders have become arrogant and are taking voters for granted by engaging in an internal power struggle so soon after the polls.

Netizens are saying that a power tussle just two months after the election makes the party look like it is more focused on which personality leads the state government than working to resolve issues affecting the people.

Political analyst Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said DAP should be ashamed of its internal bickering so soon after appointing the state’s chief minister.

He warned that this is not what its supporters expect after giving their overwhelming support to the party, adding that they may be put off by the leaders’ failure to focus on the people’s needs.

Recently, chief minister Chow Kon Yeow claimed that there were attempts to replace him before the August state election. However, the Penang DAP chairman later backtracked, saying he was merely speaking about how things were before the polls.

Now’s the time to move out Cabinet deadwood, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 10-24-2023, 10:39 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 66be10aa-menteri-kabinet-pmopic-231023.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Faced with public discontent over rising prices, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim should reshuffle his Cabinet and appoint more capable people to certain portfolios, say two academics.

The delay in appointing a replacement for the late Salahuddin Ayub since he died in July puts Anwar in a bad light, says Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara, who described Salahuddin’s portfolio of domestic trade and cost of living as a critical one. Salahuddin had pioneered a series of Rahmah sales and cheap meals campaigns.

Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia said: “If a replacement for Salahuddin is not found immediately, the people will feel the prime minister is not serious about handling the issue of living costs, which is a public issue.”

Azmi told FMT that a reshuffle is needed to remove certain ministers who are not performing well or who are not suitable for their current portfolios. They could be moved to other portfolios, for more capable ones to take their place, he said, without naming anyone.

Hadi’s call to woo non-Malays is political doublespeak
Posted by: superadmin - 10-24-2023, 09:26 AM - Forum: Stop Racism and Religious Bigotry - No Replies

Three recent incidents gave me hope that racial and religious differences being played up by politicians may not reflect the actual situation on the ground.

The first was in Taiping last week when a man used a hammer to break up an idol in a Hindu temple in broad daylight.

Many people failed to notice in the viral video clip that three other Malay men actually stopped the man from continuing with his act of madness and were seen pushing him away towards his motorcycle, asking him to leave.

Their heartwarming action was a reminder that there are wise Malaysians around who will prevent such situations from turning ugly.

They were not swayed by emotion, which could have resulted in an unpleasant outcome.

For the record, the suspect was arrested shortly after that, kudos to the police for the prompt action.

Singaporean TikToker to Tun M: Don’t you dare undermine Singaporean Malays
Posted by: superadmin - 10-23-2023, 04:36 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

IF ever there is a vote for who is the greatest rabble rouser in Malaysia, perhaps Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would win the grand prize. A netizen going by the moniker zsm commented on Tik Tok: “Dr Mahatir memang batu api” (Dr Mahathir is truly a rabble rouser).

To be fair to the twice former Malaysian premier, this should not be the way how the citizen of another country treat an elderly statesman nonagenarian; however, with his recent utterances that incensed even a Singaporean, Dr Mahathir received a severe tongue lashing from the Malay youth.

It is good that Dr Mahathir is no longer the prime minister (PM), otherwise, the relationship between Malaysia and Singapore would be severely strained once again.

What a shame!

Indirectly ostracising Dr Mahathir’s unbecoming behaviours despite his age, a TikToker going by the name Mozzy67 asked when the former Langkawi MP would go into ‘permanent’ retirement and stop playing on politics in Singapore for his personal agenda.

Mozzy67, who is probably in his 30s or one-third of Dr Mahathir’s age, spoke up on behalf of the Malay community in Singapore whom Dr Mahathir claimed “had lost their command of their mother tongue”.

Speaking in perfect Malay, Mozzy said that the national anthem in Singapore is in Malay. Referring to the present prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, Mozzy said “despite being a Chinese, Lee’s Malay is 10 times better than any Malaysian politicians” besides also having a good command of the English language, Mandarin and Tamil.
