MALAYSIA needs a stable government that can bring about reforms, not compromises. In this respect, Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s first challenge would be his Cabinet line-up.
However, generally there seems to be a sense of disappointment despite the daily inspiring and hard hitting speeches about reforms he will execute since his appointment on Nov 24.
Anwar said Cabinet appointments shall not be made in exchange for support, and that his Cabinet would drastically reduce its size. Yet, even his first call has reached 28 ministers, closer to the earlier bloated regimes.
Looking at the line-up, it seems like the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman has just accepted what was demanded by his unity government partners without any intervention.

The economy just doesn’t make sense anymore |

There’s no consistent story to tell about the economy right now. If you look at housing, everything’s a disaster. If you look at consumer spending, everything’s plugging along. If you look at the labor market, things are looking pretty phenomenal.
“There seem to be three different economies out there,” said Ethan Harris, global economist at Bank of America, in an interview. “You’ve got a housing market in recession, you’ve got a consumer who’s hanging in, and then you’ve got a hot labor market.”
The economy has been a bit of a conundrum to unpack for a while now, after the pandemic tossed multiple segments into disarray across the globe. In the United States, there was a quick but deep recession as millions of workers were laid off, businesses were shuttered, and the economy ground to a halt. The subsequent rebound has been unpredictable, to say the least. (Remember the lumber shortage? What about when nobody could find dumbbells?)

Why ‘insensitive’ Tengku Zafrul for international trade and industry? |

Ibrahim M Ahmad
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim must give clear and convincing reasons why he went for Tengku Zafrul Aziz as international trade and industry minister in his newly-formed unity Cabinet.
Originally brought in by Muhyiddin Yassin as part of his backdoor government, the technocrat-turned-politician was rejected by the rakyat at the ballot box two weeks ago, losing his bid for the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat to Anwar’s own Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate, Dzulkifly Ahmad.
That being the case, it falls on the prime minister to immediately explain why someone rejected by the rakyat has been smuggled in via the backdoor to take up such a critical post in government.
At a time when the national economy is in urgent need of foreign investment and a boost to its international trade, what special skill set does ex-banker Tengku Zafrul bring to the administration?

KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s newly announced cabinet appears to have received the stamp of approval from political observers who commended the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman for his choice of “capable and reputable” ministers.
For Universiti Teknologi Malaysia senior lecturer Mazlan Ali, the 28-member cabinet so far is a sign of the prime minister putting his best foot forward in attempting to appease all parties in the unity government.
“It is clear that this is a cabinet that will put in the necessary work. It seems that (Anwar) wants to form an efficient and effective unity government,” he told The Vibes, adding that a majority of those granted ministerial titles boast impressive political experience.

PETALING JAYA: A political analyst believes it is still too early to conclude that Perikatan Nasional is now the party of choice among the Malay community and young voters because of the significant inroads made in the general election last month.
Council of Professors fellow Jeniri Amir said a number of factors, including PN’s strong presence on TikTok, might be the cause of a shift of votes to PN from Barisan Nasional.
PN dominated TikTok but in Malay seats, BN’s choice of candidates and sabotage from within its ranks could have also caused the shift, he said.

PETALING JAYA: Former PKR vice-president Tian Chua has expressed concern that most of the eight ministers Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has named from his party are new.
Apart from Anwar and Rafizi, the other six Cabinet members from PKR are Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (home affairs), Fadhlina Sidek (education), Dr Zaliha Mustafa (health), Chang Lih Kang (science and technology), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (natural resources, environment and climate change) and Fahmi Fadzil (digital communications).

PETALING JAYA: Despite enjoying a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat, a political analyst says there are still elements of instability in the new federal government led by Anwar Ibrahim.
Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said the prime minister was walking on very thin ice when it came to holding on to his parliamentary majority.
He said one of Anwar’s top tasks moving forward would be to stabilise the government as soon as possible, adding that he could “satisfy” partners in the administration with key Cabinet appointments.
