PH confident of retaining power in 3 states
Posted by: superadmin - 01-07-2023, 08:22 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (3)

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan is confident that it will retain power in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Penang in the coming elections to state assemblies, says PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

“The focus now is to defend Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, and Penang. PH is confident of victory based on the current situation,” he said after attending the PH presidential council meeting.

While PH is expected to work together with BN, Saifuddin said the meeting did not delve into the possible cooperation as the current focus is for the election committee to make necessary preparations.

PH is expected to face a strong fight from Perikatan Nasional, which comprises PAS and Bersatu.

MACC arrests CEO over probe into RM92.5bil spent by PN govt
Posted by: superadmin - 01-06-2023, 05:33 PM - Forum: Stop Corruptions - Replies (3)

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested the CEO of a private company for allegedly serving as a middleman in the distribution of government projects.

A source close to the matter linked the arrest to MACC’s investigation into the alleged misappropriation of Covid-19 stimulus packages worth RM92.5 billion by the former Perikatan Nasional-led (PN) government.

When contacted, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed the arrest and said the case was being investigated under Section 16 (a) of the MACC Act 2009.

The source said MACC had opened investigation papers into at least five individuals believed to have been involved in helping companies obtain projects worth between RM50 million to RM500 million through direct negotiations linked to the stimulus packages.

House speaker impasse lays bare failing US democracy
Posted by: superadmin - 01-06-2023, 02:59 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

Two years after the whole world witnessed the failing of US democracy as reflected in the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, more chaos took the stage in Capitol Hill as Republicans in the House of Representatives failed for a second straight day to elect a leader on Wednesday.

A faction of hardline conservatives continued to hold back support for Republican Kevin McCarthy and the day of endless voting ended amid shouting and crowding with the House adjourning for the night.

With the eyes of the world seeing the embarrassing scene, which is usually a routine vote at the outset of a legislative session, the polarization and division of US politics and the decline of US democracy are too obvious to hide, and worries have grown as the political radicalization bug may spread to more countries from the US, and the domestic mess may push US politicians into adventurism and bring more uncertainties to the world, analysts said.

The once-in-a-century political stalemate continued in the House of Representatives as no progress was made through a sixth round of voting for House speaker on Wednesday.  Twenty conservative holdouts still refuse to support McCarthy, leaving him far short of the 218 typically needed to secure the post of Speaker, a powerful job that is second in the line of succession to the presidency, according to US media reports.

BN leadership change could spark alliance with PN, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 01-06-2023, 11:25 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An alliance between Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional could materialise with a change in BN’s leadership, say analysts.

James Chin, a professor of Asian Studies at the University of Tasmania, said this could happen if BN was no longer under current chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“If it was under the likes of Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Hishammuddin Hussein or those who are against the coalition government of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, then yes, of course, party leadership makes a difference (in whether BN allies itself with PN),” Chin told FMT.

Similarly, Council of Professors fellow Jeniri Amir agreed a change in BN’s leadership could see a shift in the political alliance landscape.

“A change in leadership will probably change the (coalition’s) political stand, and probably the new leadership would like to have a different alliance,” Jeniri told FMT.
