Govt didn’t get King’s consent to revoke ordinances, says Istana

PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya did not get the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s consent to revoke the emergency ordinances when law minister Takiyuddin Hassan announced the revocation on Monday, Istana Negara said.

“The King stresses that the minister’s statement in Parliament on July 26 is inaccurate and misled the members of the Dewan Rakyat,” said Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin in a statement today.

Fadil said Articles 150(2B) and 150(3) of the Federal Constitution clearly gave the authority for the enactment and revocation of ordinances to the King.

He said the King was aggrieved by Takiyuddin’s statement on Monday since he had yet to consent to the revocation.

What the King told Takiyuddin and Attorney-General Idrus Harun during a virtual audience, he said, was that the revocation of ordinances should be tabled and debated in Parliament.

Ipsos survey: Covid-19 pandemic has magnified divisions between elites and regular people in Malaysia, globally

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Seventy-five per cent of Malaysians believe, like their counterparts in other countries, that the current system is rigged against them, a recent survey has found.

The survey by market analysts Ipsos also found that more than half of Malaysians believe that the country is in a decline and that politicians do not care about the people.

The latest finding based on the study titled “Fracturing Societies and Systems” revealed that a majority of people in the countries surveyed globally think their nation is in a decline — a sentiment also shared by more than half of Malaysians.

The study showed that 80 per cent of Malaysians polled feel that the nation needs strong leadership to take the country back from the rich and powerful.

Malaysia’s Aaron-Wooi Yik upset Indonesia’s World No. 1 pair to book spot in men’s doubles badminton semi-finals at Tokyo Olympics

[Image: Aaron-Chia-and-Soh-Wooi-Yik-AP-290721.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik pulled off a massive upset in the men's doubles badminton quarter-finals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics today, with a scintillating straight-sets win over favourites and World No. 1 pair Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya from Indonesia .

The duo needed only 33 minutes to beat them and book their spot in the semi-finals tomorrow.

After winning the first set 21-14 in 13 minutes, the world No. 9 pair had a tougher time in the second set. After racing to a 16-12 lead they lost four points in a row before winning their next point to make it 17-16.

However, from then on, Chia and Soh never made a mistake and eventually won it 21-17 in 21 minutes to take the second set and book their first ever semi-finals appearance at an Olympic games.

Dodging simple question on EOs highlights PN’s credibility woes, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 07-29-2021, 09:07 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The government is highlighting the credibility and legitimacy issues it faces by refusing to disclose whether the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented to the revocation of the emergency ordinances (EOs), two analysts have observed.

Speaking to FMT, Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs and Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said a suspicion that the King had yet to give his consent was unavoidable.

Oh said the refusal to “give a simple answer to a simple question” had “raised more questions”.

Awang Azman said there was now speculation that the King had yet to approve of the revocation.

On Monday, law minister Takiyuddin Hassan told the Dewan Rakyat that the government had, on July 21, revoked all EOs under Article 153 of the Federal Constitution. Several MPs asked whether the King had consented to the annulment. The question remains unanswered.

China pledges support for Taliban in Afghanistan, but demands end to ETIM ties

  • Foreign Minister Wang Yi tells delegation there is no room for links with terror group it blames for Xinjiang attacks
  • Taliban spokesman says meeting in Tianjin covered political, economic and security issues as well as peace process

[Image: eaacd9f2-ef69-11eb-b683-cf7af9070523_ima...1627466160]

China has pledged support for the Taliban’s role in Afghanistan’s reconstruction, while demanding that it cuts ties with the East Turkestan Islamic Movement – blamed by Beijing for attacks in its Xinjiang region.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks during talks with a nine-member delegation led by the Taliban’s chief negotiator and co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar in the northern city of Tianjin on Wednesday.

It was the first time a senior member of the organisation had visited China since the Taliban’s capture of several key districts in Badakhshan and Kandahar provinces. Taliban fighters have taken control of around half the country up to its border with the Chinese region of Xinjiang , and US air strikes continue to support Afghan security forces.

Is there a handy back-door exit from Parliament?
Posted by: superadmin - 07-28-2021, 06:11 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

From Christopher Leong

Many Malaysians, myself included, read the news of the Dewan Rakyat proceedings held on July 26 with some bemusement, concern and consternation at the legal sleight of hand and artful antics displayed within the august House.

It has been reported that the federal government – via the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) – had announced in the Dewan Rakyat that the government had decided, based on Article 150(3) of the Federal Constitution, to revoke the six emergency ordinances that had been promulgated during the operation of the relevant Proclamation of Emergency.

The minister was reported to have gone on to say that the issue of annulment is therefore no longer relevant.

Ex-Olympians slam sexualisation of female athletes
Posted by: superadmin - 07-28-2021, 05:55 PM - Forum: Stop Gender Inequality - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Former Olympians have lashed out at the persistent sexualisation of female athletes (over the years), which have intensified now by social media platforms that more freely allow derogatory comments to disseminate.

Just a few days ago, a local news outlet chose to pixelate the body of Rio 2016 silver medallist Cheong Jun Hoong when including her picture in a story.

This was followed by negative comments about gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi’s attire which were shared in response to stories about her Olympic performances.

“Female athletes have long faced sexism, negative comments and gender inequality in sport,” former national swimmer Nurul Huda Abdullah told FMT.

Nurul, who competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, said this treatment was part of the reason she retired early from professional sport at the age of 18.

Bangi MP calls for political moratorium

Bangi MP calls for political moratorium so MPs can focus on guiding Malaysia out of Covid-19 woods

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming in Parliament today proposed that lawmakers on both sides of the aisle take on a Covid-19 Moratorium Agreement (CMA) to set aside political differences and focus collectively on a direction out of the pandemic.

The DAP man said cross-party cooperation towards a mutual goal is the way forward, saying this was evident in his constituency where the cooperation between the federal and state government, paired with a proactive District Officer, saw 11 new vaccination centres (PPVs) being opened.

Ong further justified his suggestion by saying every lawmaker would surely have ideas and suggestions on combating the pandemic, and such ideas, regardless of their feasibility, would not be explored if no mutual agreement is made.

“My suggestion is why not have a Covid-19 moratorium agreement, where we can all band together to work together as frontliners to control Covid-19 and to heal the economy.
