Umno can only achieve its goal by walking away from Perikatan, say Shahril

Umno can only achieve its goal by walking away from Perikatan, says party’s info chief Shahril

SUNGAI SIPUT, April 4 — Umno information chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan reiterated that the party will not cooperate with Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the 15th General Election despite PAS having called on Islamic groups to cooperate and unite under the PN umbrella.

He said that Umno could only achieve its goal by not being with PN.

“PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang in of the view that the right thing to do is to invite all to come under PN.

“But we are sorry, the decision has been made multiple times that we will not join or cooperate with PN in the next GE,” he told a press conference after attending Umno’s Siri Jelajah programme at MH Hotel here last night.

The real reason PPBM, Umno and PAS can’t agree
Posted by: superadmin - 04-03-2021, 07:15 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang yesterday issued a statement which has two messages: One, the party is backing Muhyiddin Yassin’s Perikatan Nasional (PN), and two, self-interested individuals are holding up Umno’s cooperation with PPBM and PAS.

Hadi said: “PAS rejects an agenda that aims solely to save the personalities of its leaders and groups, not to save the country and all the people.”

Obviously he is trying to defend his party’s backing for PPBM and PN after being told by some Umno leaders to choose between their party and PPBM.

At the same time it is clear he feels the only thing holding up an understanding among the three Malay parties is the desire of some leaders in Umno to save themselves.

We know that at least two Umno leaders have been found guilty of graft and several more are facing various corruption-related charges. Although no one has openly said it, talk is that these Umno leaders have been bargaining with Muhyiddin to help them with their cases.

Hadi’s statement yesterday just adds credence to this.

“The purpose of PAS is very clear, it is not just to save a person or a small group, but to save as many people as possible. So, if there are those who are narrow and limited in their purpose, they will certainly be left behind,” he said.

Voices of reason amid political ‘pandemic’ give us some hope
Posted by: superadmin - 04-03-2021, 11:02 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

“We have won 13 times and lost once. They lost 13 times and won once. The difference between us and them is that after we lost, many ran away.”

This must have caught the attention of many Malaysians, coming from an Umno Supreme Council member at last weekend’s annual party assembly. Johari Abdul Ghani, the former second  finance minister under Najib Razak, brought this up in the lion’s den, so to speak.

He did not mince his words nor did he pussyfoot when he urged party members to take note of PKR and DAP elected representatives who had remained firm and stuck with their parties through thick and thin despite losing multiple times.

The Federal Territories Umno chief was obviously referring to the 13 Umno MPs who had switched to PPBM soon after the 14th general election (GE14). He may not have said much but it was obvious that Johari was talking of the importance of political honour and resilience here.

DAP and PAS won 42 and 18 parliamentary seats respectively in GE14 with none crossing over to any other party. PKR succeeded in winning 48 seats but 13 of its MPs have switched to PPBM or become Perikatan Nasional (PN) friendly.

“I’m not trying to praise other parties, but I’d like all of you (delegates) to take a look at DAP and PKR,” he said at the annual gathering which is known for its race and religious rhetoric.

Report: Without Muhyiddin, Bersatu is nothing, says Nazri
Posted by: superadmin - 04-03-2021, 10:53 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 — Former Umno supreme council member, Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, sees Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (Bersatu) future as largely dependent on the political fortunes of its president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Sinar Harian reported the Padang Rengas MP as saying that Bersatu chose to continue working with PAS through Perikatan Nasional (PN) because the Islamist party has grassroots strength.

“To me, Bersatu is a party that has no future because the party is only linked to Muhyiddin as the prime minister. Should Muhyiddin no longer be the prime minister, the party will collapse.

“That is why Bersatu, for me, which does not have the strength of the grassroots, only wants to ride on PAS, which does.

Anwar bemoans loss of undersea cable project, warns this could also affect future FDI
Posted by: superadmin - 04-02-2021, 11:05 PM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, April 2 — Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has today criticised the Perikatan Nasional government for failing to build Malaysia’s 5G capability properly, claiming that it could also affect foreign direct investment (FDI).

Speaking of the recent Facebook and Google partnership to construct two underwater cables to increase Internet connectivity between Singapore, Indonesia and North America, he said Putrajaya’s actions have once again let to Malaysia being sidelined.

“Perhaps this is the objective by the leaders through ‘selective’ strategies, in order to attract foreign investment and increase our digital capabilities,” he said in a statement, referring to a recent remark by senior minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali on the FDI flight.

Anwar said this showed that the strategy has failed as digital technology giants now just prefer to avoid Malaysia.

No ‘free pass’ for govt to spend public funds, says Tok Mat
Posted by: superadmin - 04-02-2021, 08:05 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The government’s move to increase expenditure without having to go through Parliament or state assemblies is “extremely worrying”, says Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

Stating that the current state of emergency does not give the government “a free pass” to disregard accountability and transparency, Mohamad, also known as Tok Mat, said any action deemed valid during an emergency must be based on values, morals and principles.

“This is even more crucial when it comes to spending public funds. No matter how complex, complicated and dire a situation is, the government should not be able to escape rigorous scrutiny when spending the people’s money or the nation’s wealth,” he said in a statement.

He said it was far more critical for a government to be vigilant and responsible when spending the nation’s revenue during an emergency.

Ambiga urges civil society to push for Parliament to reopen, defend Undi18
Posted by: superadmin - 04-02-2021, 06:35 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 2 — Lawyer and human rights activist Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan today said that it was time for the civil society to pressure the government to reopen Parliament and challenge the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government for delaying the implementation of Undi18.

She also urged Opposition MPs to form a shadow cabinet and respond to new laws, policy and decisions made by the PN government.

“Civil society must speak up, also the parliamentarians...parliamentarians should form shadow cabinets and they should be responding to what the government is doing,” she told reporters during a press conference outside the Dang Wangi police district headquarters today.

Ambiga is one of the four individuals including three MPs that had their statements recorded from the police today for protesting in front of the parliament last Saturday over the delay in the implementation of Undi18.
