Take a break, former VP tells Umno leaders facing charges |

PETALING JAYA: Umno members facing charges in court should either quit the party or take a leave of absence as they have created a “bad impression” among the rakyat, says former Umno vice-president Muhammad Muhammad Taib.
He said failure to do so would adversely affect the reputation of the party which can also result in reduced public support.
Muhammad, who is Selangor Umno adviser, said it was the party’s culture in the past for leaders charged in court to step down from their positions until their cases are concluded.
“This has been Umno’s tradition. They must settle their cases and be freed before they can return to the party.
“The current leaders in this kind of situation must take a break, like how past leaders used to.
“But now, leaders facing criminal charges, whether in the government or the opposition, continue to be leaders,” he told Utusan Malaysia in an interview.

PETALING JAYA: PPBM will now focus on strengthening ties with its partners in the Perikatan Nasional coalition and its ally Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), PPBM’s secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said.
In a statement, he said the supreme council is committed to working more closely with PAS, Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku Rakyat Sabah (STAR), Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and Gerakan.
In a move which is seen as an emphasis on its ties with PAS for the next general election, he added that 12 PPBM representatives have been appointed to formulate strategies at the federal level for the two parties.
“PPBM is also ready to help its political ally GPS, which supports Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s leadership, in facing the coming state election,” he said. The meeting was chaired by party president Muhyiddin yesterday,

5 days notice too long for peaceful protests, NGOs tell govt |

PETALING JAYA: Two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have urged the government to review the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (PAA) as the current 5-day notice to hold an assembly is obstructive.
Election reform group Bersih 2.0 said there were sections in the PAA that were too restrictive and criminalised those who wanted to exercise their democratic and constitutional right to assemble peacefully in a protest.
“The requirement to give the police five days notice in advance under Section 9(1) of the law can be unreasonable as quite often there are issues that require a quick response,” Bersih 2.0 chairman Thomas Fann told FMT.
He said a 24-hour notice should suffice as the police force was supposed to respond to these types of situations at short notice.
Fann added that another restrictive section of the law was PAA Section 4(2)(b), which says peaceful assemblies cannot be held within 50 metres of a prohibited area. He said one could not organise a protest in an urban centre if the police chose to consistently enforce this law.

How a small home business in Penang turned into a brick and mortar one during MCO 2.0 |

GEORGE TOWN, April 4 — We have read about — and perhaps even experienced — the devastating impact Covid-19 has had on the local economy.
But it has not been all doom and gloom as some businesses not only survived but thrived.
Ong Leng Hin’s muesli enterprise did so well he opened his own cafe here earlier this month. Quite a remarkable feat when so many businesses have had to shutter in the past year.
It all began with Ong’s craving for fresh muesli for breakfast. Since he was unable to find ones on the market that suit his taste, he started making his own with the help of his mother.
“I was posting my homemade muesli on social media and my friends kept asking me to make extra and sell to them so that was how it started,” he said.
He sold his homemade muesli in small batches under the brand “Wonder Penguin” in late 2019 and it grew organically from there.
He only started pushing his muesli more aggressively when the movement control order (MCO) was imposed in March 2020 and soon, he was getting more and more orders.
“Between October 2019 and June 2020, I sold about 122 kilogrammes of muesli to mostly my friends through social media,” he said.
When the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) introduced the Business From Home (BFH) licence for small home businesses during the MCO last year, Ong applied for it.
He thinks it is a very good initiative as it allows entrepreneurs like him to start out small to test the market first without investing in a physical shop.

Perikatan developing major coalition of political parties, says Saifuddin |

KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 — Perikatan Nasional (PN), under the leadership of Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, is developing a big coalition of political parties that will unite the people fairly, justly, inclusively and harmoniously in a new political mould, said Pahang PN chairman Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah.
He was also confident that PN had learned from the weaknesses of Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) that any decisions made by a coalition should be based on discussions and not dominated by one party.
“In BN, Umno is the dominant party. BN’s top posts — chairman, deputy chairman, secretary-general, treasurer, women’s chief, youth chief, information chief — are held by Umno. In PN, they are shared among component parties.
“In PH, there was no party that was dominant, but a situation where it was supported by ‘a big majority from a minority group’ and ‘only a small minority from the majority group’, causing it not to last long,” he said in a post on his official Facebook page today.

Umno can only achieve its goal by walking away from Perikatan, says party’s info chief Shahril
SUNGAI SIPUT, April 4 — Umno information chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan reiterated that the party will not cooperate with Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the 15th General Election despite PAS having called on Islamic groups to cooperate and unite under the PN umbrella.
He said that Umno could only achieve its goal by not being with PN.
“PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang in of the view that the right thing to do is to invite all to come under PN.
“But we are sorry, the decision has been made multiple times that we will not join or cooperate with PN in the next GE,” he told a press conference after attending Umno’s Siri Jelajah programme at MH Hotel here last night.

The real reason PPBM, Umno and PAS can’t agree |

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang yesterday issued a statement which has two messages: One, the party is backing Muhyiddin Yassin’s Perikatan Nasional (PN), and two, self-interested individuals are holding up Umno’s cooperation with PPBM and PAS.
Hadi said: “PAS rejects an agenda that aims solely to save the personalities of its leaders and groups, not to save the country and all the people.”
Obviously he is trying to defend his party’s backing for PPBM and PN after being told by some Umno leaders to choose between their party and PPBM.
At the same time it is clear he feels the only thing holding up an understanding among the three Malay parties is the desire of some leaders in Umno to save themselves.
We know that at least two Umno leaders have been found guilty of graft and several more are facing various corruption-related charges. Although no one has openly said it, talk is that these Umno leaders have been bargaining with Muhyiddin to help them with their cases.
Hadi’s statement yesterday just adds credence to this.
“The purpose of PAS is very clear, it is not just to save a person or a small group, but to save as many people as possible. So, if there are those who are narrow and limited in their purpose, they will certainly be left behind,” he said.

“We have won 13 times and lost once. They lost 13 times and won once. The difference between us and them is that after we lost, many ran away.”
This must have caught the attention of many Malaysians, coming from an Umno Supreme Council member at last weekend’s annual party assembly. Johari Abdul Ghani, the former second finance minister under Najib Razak, brought this up in the lion’s den, so to speak.
He did not mince his words nor did he pussyfoot when he urged party members to take note of PKR and DAP elected representatives who had remained firm and stuck with their parties through thick and thin despite losing multiple times.
The Federal Territories Umno chief was obviously referring to the 13 Umno MPs who had switched to PPBM soon after the 14th general election (GE14). He may not have said much but it was obvious that Johari was talking of the importance of political honour and resilience here.
DAP and PAS won 42 and 18 parliamentary seats respectively in GE14 with none crossing over to any other party. PKR succeeded in winning 48 seats but 13 of its MPs have switched to PPBM or become Perikatan Nasional (PN) friendly.
“I’m not trying to praise other parties, but I’d like all of you (delegates) to take a look at DAP and PKR,” he said at the annual gathering which is known for its race and religious rhetoric.

Report: Without Muhyiddin, Bersatu is nothing, says Nazri |

KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 — Former Umno supreme council member, Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, sees Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (Bersatu) future as largely dependent on the political fortunes of its president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Sinar Harian reported the Padang Rengas MP as saying that Bersatu chose to continue working with PAS through Perikatan Nasional (PN) because the Islamist party has grassroots strength.
“To me, Bersatu is a party that has no future because the party is only linked to Muhyiddin as the prime minister. Should Muhyiddin no longer be the prime minister, the party will collapse.
“That is why Bersatu, for me, which does not have the strength of the grassroots, only wants to ride on PAS, which does.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 2 — Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has today criticised the Perikatan Nasional government for failing to build Malaysia’s 5G capability properly, claiming that it could also affect foreign direct investment (FDI).
Speaking of the recent Facebook and Google partnership to construct two underwater cables to increase Internet connectivity between Singapore, Indonesia and North America, he said Putrajaya’s actions have once again let to Malaysia being sidelined.
“Perhaps this is the objective by the leaders through ‘selective’ strategies, in order to attract foreign investment and increase our digital capabilities,” he said in a statement, referring to a recent remark by senior minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali on the FDI flight.
Anwar said this showed that the strategy has failed as digital technology giants now just prefer to avoid Malaysia.
