Stay out, leave Sarawak polls to us, GPS tells Perikatan

MIRI – Perikatan Nasional component parties such as Bersatu and PAS or even Umno for that matter will not be allotted any seats to contest in the upcoming 12th Sarawak election.

Sarawak’s ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition has confirmed that it will field its candidates at all 82 state constituencies.

GPS, comprising Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United People’s Party, Parti Rakyat Sarawak, and Progressive Democratic Party will be fielding their candidates respectively.

PBB vice-president Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah told a press conference at his office in Kuching today that there will be no seats for PN.

Who really is Shafie and why does he oppose that MoU? – P. Gunasegaram
Posted by: superadmin - 09-21-2021, 08:48 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: LEAD_PHOTO_15092021_-_Shafie_Apdal_-_SAD...F_-_12.jpg]

ARE those the values in our lives, Warisan chief Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal questioned.

The root cause was instability, he said a moment earlier. We are playing with numbers for human life, he went on.

Shafie was speaking in Parliament recently criticising Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government for reforms, which include lowering the voting age to 18, limiting the prime minister to two terms, introducing anti-party-hopping laws, and plans to control Covid-19 and revive the economy.

While he went on to talk about unrelated things, he did not make it clear why he was opposed to the MoU. Opposition leaders have repeatedly pointed out the MoU does not take the right away from opposition members to take a position against the government, but works with them where it is beneficial for the country.

His opposition to the MoU seems based solely on an objection to working with people who stole the mandate from the PH coalition, including Warisan, which backed the coalition post-2018 elections.

Shafie is now making this MoU a major issue to push ahead with his agenda of making himself a potential future leader, saying anti-party-hopping laws are unnecessary if politicians have values.

But it is precisely because politicians, including the likes of Shafie, do not have values that such laws are necessary. What are Shafie’s values with respect to some of these?

RM13mil in Kedah funds sent to Canada, reveals Sanusi
Posted by: superadmin - 09-21-2021, 07:21 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

[Image: Muhammad-Sanusi-Md-Nor-bernama-210921.jpg]

ALOR SETAR: Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor dropped a bombshell today when he claimed that his predecessor had transferred RM13 million of Kedah Menteri Besar Inc funds to an offshore account.

Speaking to members of the media after today’s Kedah state assembly session, Sanusi said that the money was transferred to an account in Canada when Mukhriz Mahathir, the Jitra assemblyman, was menteri besar.

Sanusi made the revelation after he claimed that Mukhriz had brought up old issues in the assembly.

“I have never told anyone about this (RM13 million) … only today I am revealing. That is an old issue, which I have never raised before. I’m still keeping the transfer slip,” he said.

FMT has reached out to Mukhriz and MBI Kedah for comments.

The first test for Evergrande’s debt crisis comes this week
Posted by: superadmin - 09-21-2021, 04:46 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

  • Evergrande is due to pay out interest worth $83 million on a 5-year, U.S.-dollar denominated bond, with an initial issue size of around $2 billion. Another interest payment on a 7-year dollar bond is due next Wednesday, on Sept. 29.
  • Analysts and market watchers largely expect that Evergrande to miss the interest payment on Thursday.
  • If these initial defaults happen, institutional and other foreign investors will likely be more affected compared to domestic investors in China, analysts say.

The first test for Evergrande’s debt crisis comes this week — investors will be watching to see if the embattled Chinese property developer is able to pay out its interest due on a bond, or default on it.

The firm is due to pay interest worth $83 million on Thursday, according to data from S&P Global Ratings.

Evergrande’s 5-year, U.S.-dollar denominated bond, had an initial issue size of around $2 billion, according to market data provider Refinitiv Eikon – although the price has plummeted now.

Why eating colourful food is good for you
Posted by: superadmin - 09-21-2021, 04:25 PM - Forum: Health News - Replies (2)

Most of us are faced with the same choice numerous times a day: what to eat. Along with price, accessibility and preference, we'll often use a food's healthfulness to help us make a decision.

But when we zoom out to inspect our overall diets, how do we know we're getting the nutrients we need?

It's widely accepted by researchers that we need a varied diet, and that one way to do this is by eating all the colours of the rainbow. But is colour the best guide to getting all the nutrients we need?

The proof may be in the Mediterranean diet, which contains a lot of fruit, vegetables and healthy fats such as extra virgin olive oil, and is frequently rated the healthiest diet by scientists.

It's no coincidence that the diet is packed with different colours, says Francesco Sofi, associate professor of clinical nutrition at the University of Florence.

"Eating a traditional Mediterranean diet means you consume different nutrients and phytonutrients," he says. Phytonutrients are small chemical compounds produced by plants that help us to digest larger nutrients and also play a role in removing toxins from our bodies.

MACC chief should bow out, let police investigate stolen monies: Fahmi
Posted by: superadmin - 09-21-2021, 02:56 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 03012021-KUL-_Lembah_Pantai_MP_fahmi_fad...KASSIM.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – The three Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers detained over alleged misappropriation of monies classified as evidence should be investigated by police, according to Fahmi Fadzil (Lembah Pantai-PH).

The RM50.4 million was seized from Malaysia External Intelligence Organisation (MEIO) chief Datuk Hasanah Abdul Hamid by the MACC.

It is also alleged that the misappropriated funds were replaced with counterfeit banknotes.

“This is surprising because the detention of MACC officers was done by MACC itself,” Fahmi said during a parliamentary press conference today.

The PKR lawmaker said there are five Penal Code offences that may have been violated, which should prompt a response from police.

Suaram says Home Ministry’s custodial death figures misleading
Posted by: superadmin - 09-21-2021, 02:50 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 — Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) has disputed the data provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) on deaths in police custody in a parliamentary reply last week.

Suaram executive director Sevan Doraisamy said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin’s parliamentary reply on Sept 15 stated that six custodial deaths occurred in the year to date until August whereas the group has observed at least seven cases.

“We are confused as to how the MoHA has recorded the amount of deaths in custody. This is because, based on the given answer, the stated amount does not include a number of deaths that are evidently instances of deaths in custody.

“The death of Sivabalan Subramaniam as soon as he was arrested by the police from IPD Gombak and the death of Umar Faruq who passed away in custody of IPD Klang Selatan, are examples of these missing cases,” he said in a statement today.

The court set Oct 5 for further case management.

Posted by: superadmin - 09-21-2021, 02:34 PM - Forum: Stop Gender Inequality - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Women aged 18 to 30 regularly face sexual harassment, with 44% of them saying that they had witnessed their teacher making sexually provocative jokes, according to a recent survey.

While 45% of the respondents claimed that they had not witnessed sexually provocative jokes by a teacher, 11% said they were uncertain or could not recall if they had seen it when they were in school.

The nationwide survey by the Centre for Governance and Political Studies (Cent-GPS) in collaboration with the All-Women’s Action Society (Awam) had asked 1,056 women aged between 18 and 30 if they had experienced sexual harassment in their day-to-day lives.

In a statement on the survey results, Cent-GPS said most of the women reported being sexually-harassed regularly while doing simple daily activities.
