PKR not using PH logo in Johor because of ‘Mahathir stigma’
Posted by: superadmin - 03-06-2022, 12:10 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: For many PKR members, Pakatan Harapan’s logo is a sore reminder of Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s time in the former ruling coalition, says a party leader explaining why PKR is contesting the Johor elections using its own logo.

PKR strategist Wong Chen said the decision made the party grassroots feel happier overall and the campaign team on the ground is happier and more committed.

“Most of our grassroots think of the PH logo as part of Dr Mahathir’s time in Pakatan, when to be fair (PKR president) Anwar Ibrahim and all of us were not inside,” he said.

Of the Ukraine war, use of Malay, and comedians in politics
Posted by: superadmin - 03-06-2022, 09:00 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

What interesting times we’re in. There’s a war in Europe, being covered breathlessly by the news channels and social media. I sometimes feel like I’m watching a video game with super realistic special effects.

I don’t want to trivialise the war. There hasn’t been a conflict like this in Europe since the end of World War 2, and stakes are high, as is the suffering of those caught in it.

While not taking sides (Go Ukraine!), I’m sobered by the realisation that our quiet everyday life could change so easily and drastically. One day we’re enjoying our roti canai, the next we’re war refugees.

But I enjoy hearing the “talking head” experts on the news channels. Such experts range from deskbound analysts with no experience of war and conflict but lots of opinions (hey CNN, I’m available), to actual players current and past, such as statesmen, diplomats and generals.

Johor polls: Can Dr Mahathir’s presence bring success to Pejuang?
Posted by: superadmin - 03-05-2022, 08:39 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 03122021_-_Mahathir_Mohamad_-_Sairien-12.JPG]

JOHOR BARU – After (previously) only penning open letters to voters, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad went to Kluang on Thursday to assist Pejuang’s campaign in the Johor election, despite being advised by doctors about risks to his health due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the age of 97, the Pejuang chairman, who just recovered from a serious illness, accompanied by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, attended a lunch function with the Chinese Business and Industry Association in Batu Pahat on Thursday, before joining the party’s Aspirasi Johor programme in Felda Ayer Hitam the same day.

However, can Dr Mahathir’s presence help Pejuang to achieve success in the election that it is participating in for the first time? Based on observations, the two events did not attract many attendees, but they certainly injected enthusiasm into the party machinery.

Pejuang is contesting in 42 seats out of the 56 up for grabs in the election.

Its Pejuanita Muda (women’s wing) chief Nurul Ashikin Mabahwi said the presence of the former prime minister had indeed boosted the party’s machinery to go all out with just a week remaining before polling day.

PAS bringing polygamy into politics, says Nur Jazlan
Posted by: superadmin - 03-05-2022, 05:26 PM - Forum: Politics - Replies (1)

[Image: Nur-Jazlan-Mohamed-bernama-210122-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: An Umno leader has mocked PAS for “bringing polygamy into politics” by wavering in their decision to cooperate with Umno under Muafakat Nasional.

Nur Jazlan Mohamed, who is Johor Umno deputy chief, claimed that PAS only wanted to enter into relationships with anyone that they could benefit from.

“PAS has brought polygamy into politics and simply wants to reap any benefits they can get.

“They have now perceived Perikatan Nasional (PN) as an ailing coalition — that’s why they say they’re still open to maintaining ties with BN and Umno,” he told FMT.

Yesterday, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said Muafakat Nasional (MN), the party’s pact with Umno, would be re-evaluated after the Johor elections on March 12.

At least 56 dead, 194 wounded in suicide attack on Pakistan Shiite mosque
Posted by: superadmin - 03-05-2022, 05:19 PM - Forum: Stop the Wars and Terrorism - No Replies

PESHAWAR – At least 56 people were killed and 194 wounded yesterday by a suicide bomb at a Shiite mosque in the northwestern Pakistan city of Peshawar, the deadliest attack in the country since 2018.

The blast – claimed by the Islamic State group – tore through the Kocha Risaldar area of the city moments before Friday prayers were to start, shattering the interior and showering the streets with broken glass.

It came on the first day of a cricket Test match in Rawalpindi – around 190km (120 miles) to the east – between Pakistan and Australia, who have not toured the country in nearly a quarter of a century because of security concerns.

Muhammad Asim Khan, a spokesman for Peshawar’s Lady Reading Hospital, said the death toll had climbed to 56, the deadliest since a July 2018 blast – claimed by the local chapter of the Islamic State group – killed 149 people at an election rally.

He said 50 of the wounded were in critical condition.

  People suffer, big pharma profits
Posted by: superadmin - 03-05-2022, 11:53 AM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

For more than two years, people on the planet have been living in fear of an invisible virus and its variants. The SARS-CoV-2 virus, detected in late-December 2019 in Wuhan, China, has since mutated multiple times, with some variants, such as Omicron, becoming more transmissible.

Covid-19 has caused more than 5.9 million deaths and infected more than 438 million people (as at March 2) throughout the world; and the numbers keep rising.

However, while millions upon millions of people are suffering, some are becoming wealthier. In particular, pharmaceutical firms providing vaccines and related material for the Covid-19 pandemic, and their top officials, are raking in money in the billions.

Some would say the profits are derived from the tears, fears and pain of ordinary people.

PH’s struggles due to Dr M’s refusal to back Anwar, says analyst
Posted by: superadmin - 03-05-2022, 11:25 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: anwar-ibrahim-tun-mahathir-mohamad-fmt-081218-2-1.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s refusal to support PKR president Anwar Ibrahim is the main reason why Pakatan Harapan (PH) is fractured, says a political analyst.

Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs said Mahathir’s refusal to back Anwar and hand over power as agreed had essentially split the coalition, something it has yet to recover from.

He was commenting on Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir’s remarks that Anwar, the PH chairman, had not done enough to unite opposition parties.

Oh said while he did not think Mukhriz was wrong in his assessment, he and his father were also to blame for their shortcomings as leaders in PH when it was the ruling government.

Will a Chinese wind of change blow BN’s way?
Posted by: superadmin - 03-05-2022, 10:11 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

JOHOR BAHRU: Chinese voters are expected to have a huge say on which coalition forms the next Johor state government on March 12.

Although all parties claim they have the support of the community, Chinese voters in urban areas have traditionally been considered to be “opposition supporters” although there were indications in the Melaka and Sarawak state elections that there was a change of tide or general discontentment with Pakatan Harapan.

Many members of the community told FMT they had already decided on how they would be voting, though some remained uncertain.

Explain why Muhyiddin, Tajuddin cases shelved, MACC told
Posted by: superadmin - 03-05-2022, 10:03 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Anti-graft groups have called on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to explain why its probes into former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman were classified as requiring “no further action”.

Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) president Muhammad Mohan said more details should be disclosed to convince the public that no wrongdoings were committed.

“The public will not just accept an NFA decision, so the MACC must provide more information to convince the public,” he told FMT.

Stressing that the public had come to expect greater transparency from the government, Mohan said disclosing more details on the investigations would help MACC manage public perception and demonstrate that it did everything in its power to investigate the cases.

“The issue here is public perception. Once MACC confirms that investigations into the allegations are under way, the public will expect something to come up,” he said.
