SIMPANG RENGGAM, March 4 — PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has hinted last night that there is a specific reason behind the party naming Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik to contest a state seat.
“There is a reason why Maszlee was the only PKR MP in the state seat of Layang-Layang.
“There is a reason why he was out here to service the constituency and Johor people,” he told a rally at the Layang-Layang main operations centre.
This comes amid rumours that the former education minister Maszlee will be Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) choice for Johor’s next mentri besar if it wins the Johor election.

PETALING JAYA: An analyst has voiced disagreement with pundits who see the addition of 750,000 new voters in the Johor polls as a harbinger of change.
Shahrill Sabarudin, a fellow at the research institute Bait Al Amanah, told FMT he didn’t believe there would be much of a change in the game of politics just because many of the new voters would be below the age of 21 and were often thought to differ from older voters in their political views.
He noted that a significant portion of the new voters were automatically registered and said this showed that many, particularly those were qualified to vote in the 2018 general election, were indifferent to the electoral process.
“Why would this state election be any more exciting to them?” he said.

KUALA LUMPUR – Fahmi Fadzil (Lembah Pantai-PH) wants authorities to investigate Digital Nasional Bhd’s (DNB) 5G network deal with Swedish telecommunications firm Ericsson over possible corruption.
This after it was revealed through media reports that the United States’ Justice Department (DoJ) is probing Ericsson over years of alleged corruption in several countries.
Speaking in Parliament, Fahmi said the allegations against the communications firm are huge as they involve its global business activities, and also considering that DNB signed an agreement with the company July last year to be its 5G network equipment provider.
“I urge the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to conduct a full probe into the matter.
“Were there elements of corruption in the issuance of the contract to Ericsson?” he said when debating the royal address today.
“This reminds us of the issue of 1MDB, where we had Goldman Sachs involved then. Do we want to see a similar situation with DNB? We need to avoid Ericsson being like (Goldman Sachs).”
Apart from MACC, Fahmi also called on the Public Accounts Committee to conduct a full audit of DNB and to scrutinise its deal with Ericsson.

JOHOR BARU – Is Pakatan Harapan (PH) a threat to Barisan Nasional (BN) in the upcoming Johor election?
According to state Umno deputy chief Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed, the answer is in the negative, adding that PH is “no more”.
“There’s no more PH, because PKR, DAP and Amanah are not even using the same logo,” Jazlan said in a conversation with The Vibes.
Meanwhile, the former three-term Pulai MP said that all that is left for BN to attack during this campaign period is Perikatan Nasional (PN).
But, even then, he contended, the coalition led by former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is not an actual danger to BN, as he believes PN’s political composition may prove to be its downfall in Johor.

PETALING JAYA: Taking its strongest official position yet, Malaysia joined 140 other countries in overwhelmingly voting to adopt a resolution at the UN General Assembly yesterday demanding that Russia immediately end its military operations in Ukraine.
“Malaysia voted in favour and delivered a statement following the adoption of a resolution entitled ‘Aggression against Ukraine’ at the 11th Emergency Special Session #ESS of the General Assembly today,” said Malaysia’s Mission to the UN in a tweet.
The resolution demands that Russia “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders”.
It was passed by 141 countries. Five countries – Russia, Belarus, Syria, North Korea and Eritrea – voted against it while 35 abstained.

Analysts: Ahead of GE15, Opposition needs to counter disenchantment with Pakatan as low voter turnout benefits Umno, PAS
KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 — Cheah CY, a 62-year-old retiree, has been a staunch supporter of Opposition party DAP for the past four decades and has never hesitated to vote for the party in past elections.
Since the fall of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government two years ago though, things have changed.
“Why should I go out and vote? When it turns out those in power are not the ones I voted for?” he told Malay Mail recently.
“It’s also quite disappointing to see that after GE14, DAP and PKR aren’t much to shout about,” he added, referring to the 14th general election which took place in 2018.)
