PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Bar has called on Attorney-General Idrus Harun to provide reasons for the discontinuation of criminal cases of public interest.
Its president, AG Kalidas, said transparency was a central tenet in the rule of law and the basis for public trust and confidence.
Kalidas said the attorney-general was given wide discretionary powers to institute proceedings for a criminal offence. As such, the powers must be exercised with full transparency.

PETALING JAYA: There are reports that a rally will be held in Kuala Lumpur calling for the resignation of embattled Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki.
It is, however, unclear as to who is organising the rally, said to be taking place on Jan 22.
A poster with the likeness of Azam and the words “Tangkap Azam Baki” has gone viral on social media, with the hashtag #TangkapAzamBaki now trending.
The poster also includes a call to “Reform MACC”.

PETALING JAYA: Former plantation industries and commodities minister Khairuddin Aman Razali has been dropped as an appointed PAS committee member, less than two months after being reappointed to the role.
Party president Abdul Hadi Awang confirmed the matter today, Utusan Malaysia reported.
“The matter was handled by PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan. Of course, there is a reason (for his dismissal). In the party, there must be discipline.
“Whoever does not follow, he can be transferred – to work someplace else, or suspended or even sacked,” Hadi told reporters after Friday prayers in Marang today.
The decision was made at a PAS meeting held at the party headquarters in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Lithuanian govt faces growing domestic opposition over anti-China policy |

Growing opposition among Lithuanian politicians is tearing apart its government over the country's wrong move of allowing the opening of a "Taiwan representative office," with the opposition party leader urging its foreign minister to step down, and Chinese observers said that the opposition will dominate politics in the Baltic country and may eventually change the name of the office.
Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Mantas Adomenas said the Foreign Ministry failed to predict China's strong response to such anti-China policy, saying that before deepening ties with the Taiwan region, the Foreign Ministry considered possible "retaliation" from China, but did not expect Beijing to go after Lithuania's trading partners in Europe, Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT) reported on Monday.
Also on Monday, Vilija Blinkeviciute, leader of the opposition Social Democratic Party (LSDP), said Lithuania, in cooperation with EU members and international partners, could consider renaming the representative office to reduce tensions with China. She urged Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis to step down, saying the reckless decision to clash with China was a big mistake that all Lithuanian people are paying for, local media reported.

Why airplanes might soon have just one pilot |

(CNN) — If you boarded a passenger plane in 1950 and peeked into the cockpit, you would have seen five people in there (almost certainly men): two pilots, a radio operator, a navigator and a flight engineer.
Over the years, technical advances in radio communications, navigation systems and on-board monitoring equipment gradually removed the need for the last three, making it possible to safely fly a passenger plane with just two pilots. That has been the norm in commercial aviation for about 30 years.
Soon, however, things could streamline further, and one of the two remaining pilots -- technically the first officer -- could soon go, leaving behind only the captain. Many smaller and military aircraft are already manned by a single pilot, but for commercial aviation this would mean venturing into a brave new world.

After comedy of errors, MACC panel members must resign |

From Walter Sandosam
Integrity is a virtue which has taken a leave of absence from the Malaysian scene, be it in public service or the corporate sector.
The conflicting statements being issued and the comedy of errors at press conferences by the purportedly independent oversight panels to shed light on the on-goings at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) have infuriated the public. In the process, the trust element on the institutional infrastructure has taken a severe whipping.
In view of the damage inflicted on the MACC, the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (ACAB) chair and the ACAB members (in light of the press conference of Jan 11) should summarily, as persons of integrity, submit their letters of resignation to the palace, as opposed to the incongruous and ridiculous view that “we’re leaving it to the King and government to decide”.
When both the ACAB chair and ACAB members taken collectively have not performed up to expectations and are subject to public ridicule, an honourable exit is the only way forward. The view expressed that the authorities are “free to investigate” is incongruous as it reflects the board’s ineptitude.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 — The Securities Commission of Malaysia (SC) will be calling up the brother of Tan Sri Azam Baki for an interview over alleged violation of stock trading laws by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Nasir Baki is set to give his statement to the regulatory body soon as to why and whether he chose to use his brother’s share trading account to buy shares in 2015, since it was understood that he has his own trading account.
Malay Mail also understands that investigators will be looking into any financial transactions between the two brothers to determine whether an offence has been committed under the Securities Industry (Central Depositories) Act (SICDA).
Malay Mail has contacted the SC for verification and further comments.

PETALING JAYA: Anti-Corruption Advisory Board (ACAB) chairman Abu Zahar Ujang has come under fire for trying to pin the blame on the media for the furore that followed his statements on top graft buster Azam Baki’s shareholding.
Klang MP Charles Santiago said the issue had nothing to do with misreporting.
“The six (ACAB) members are saying very clearly that they don’t agree with him,” Santiago told FMT. “His refusal to take questions indicates that he may be trying to hide something, otherwise, he’d be quite open with his statements.

- The consumer price index, an inflation gauge that measures costs across dozens of items, rose 7% in December from a year earlier, the fastest pace since June 1982.
- That was in line, however, with economist estimates, and stock market futures rose after the release.
- Excluding food and energy, so-called core CPI was up 5.5% on the year, the biggest growth since February 1991.
nflation plowed ahead at its fastest 12-month pace in nearly 40 years during December, according to a closely watched gauge the Labor Department released Wednesday.
The consumer price index, a metric that measures costs across dozens of items, increased 7%, according to the department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. On a monthly basis, CPI rose 0.5%.
Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been expecting the gauge to increase 7% on an annual basis and 0.4% from November.

PUTRAJAYA – The Malaysian government is waiting to see the stand taken on the Taliban government in Afghanistan by international bodies like the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation before deciding its own stand on the matter.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah said Malaysia has yet to decide on recognising the Taliban and is taking a cautious approach to the matter.
“For the time being, there are no indications we will recognise the Taliban government and we don’t want to make any hasty decisions,” he said during a press conference after delivering the Malaysian Foreign Ministry’s new year’s message here yesterday.
On humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, Saifuddin noted that Malaysia had already pledged US$100,000 to the United Nations for the purpose.
