Covid-19 vaccines up to 90% effective in preventing infection: MoH study
Posted by: superadmin - 09-24-2021, 02:51 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Covid-19 vaccinations in Malaysia have an efficacy rate of between 86% and 90% in preventing infections, according to a study by the Health Ministry involving 1.2 million people.

The ministry’s Real-World Evaluation of Covid-19 Vaccines under the Malaysia National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (Recovam) study also found that vaccines administered in the country have up to 88% effectiveness in preventing symptomatic infections.

Dr Kalaiarasu M. Peariasamy of the National Institute of Clinical Research (ICR) said those who are partially vaccinated have up to a 53% chance of not contracting the virus, and between 33% and 37% chance of developing symptoms if they did.

On admissions to the intensive care unit (ICU), the rates varied according to vaccine brands.

Those fully vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine had between a 91% and 99% chance of not being admitted to ICUs, and 60% to 68% if they received only one dose.

For Pfizer-BioNTech recipients, their chances of entering ICUs were reduced by between 91% and 94%, and those partially immunised with this brand had up to 38% and 45% chance of admission.

New rules for investing in China: Lessons from Beijing’s education crackdown
Posted by: superadmin - 09-24-2021, 02:41 PM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

  • Regulators cracked down on Chinese ride-hailing app Didi, then after-school tutoring companies, this summer.
  • In both cases, investment funds poured in billions of dollars for a strategy of cash burning to subsidize exponential user growth and build up a dominant market leader.
  • Now, investors need to consider national policies far more than just industry developments, Ming Liao, founding partner of Beijing-based Prospect Avenue Capital.

BEIJING — As overseas investors reel from Beijing’s regulatory crackdown, the rapid fallout in an industry like after-school tutoring can be a guide to what went wrong, and where future opportunities lie in China.

Before China cracked down on tutoring schools this summer, major investment firms like SoftBank were pouring billions of dollars into Chinese education companies, many of which were publicly traded in the U.S. or on their way to listing there.

The strategy was one of burning cash to fund exponential user growth, with hopes of profit in the future. For the strategy to work, investors aimed for a “winner takes all” approach that they’d used with other Chinese start-ups such as coffee chain Luckin Coffee and ride-hailing company Didi.

Anti-vaccine groups still thriving on chat apps despite social media crackdown
Posted by: superadmin - 09-24-2021, 02:26 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 — With nearly 82 per cent of Malaysia’s adult population fully vaccinated for Covid-19, attention is turning to parts of the country that are still holding out against the vaccines.

Like many other countries, Malaysia has small but vocal groups opposed to Covid-19 vaccines, thanks to social media that has made it easier for such individuals to find one another.

With platforms such as Facebook and Twitter cracking down on anti-vaccination sentiments, however, such groups and individuals have turned to messaging services such as Telegram and WhatsApp, which are effectively unmoderated, to continue sharing their opposition.

On Telegram, for instance, a simple search using phrases such as “anti vaksin” and “anti vaxx” results in a plethora of groups discussing such themes.

Where’re your principles on gambling, PAS veteran asks party’s ministers
Posted by: superadmin - 09-24-2021, 02:19 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: A PAS veteran questioned the role of PAS leaders in the Cabinet after the number of “special draws” for 4-digit (4D) lottery operators was increased from eight times in 2020 to 22 times this year.

Speaking to FMT, Mahfodz Mohamed insisted that PAS ministers should not abandon the principle of upholding Islamic teachings just because they were now part of the government.

“I am not happy with the government’s decision (to increase 4D draws). Although the current government is Malay-Muslim, these draws should be reduced, not increased.

“Knowing what’s ‘halal’ and ‘haram’, PAS ministers must voice out (their opposition) as they are now part of the government.

Umno must get rid of ‘problematic’ leaders before GE15, say analysts
Posted by: superadmin - 09-24-2021, 02:14 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: LOGO-UMNO-PERGERAKAN-PEMUDA-UMNO-PAU-FMT-051219.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah’s recent comments about Umno being materialistic, greedy and having low morals is a signal that the party’s internal struggles have not been resolved yet, say two analysts

Former Universiti Sains Malaysia lecturer Ahmad Atory Hussain said Umno’s top leadership is still suffering from a “confidence crisis”, adding that it was time to do away with leaders seen as problematic before it faces the 15th general election (GE15).

“Umno must rebrand and replace its problematic leaders. Or else, it will be difficult to rise up in GE15.

“Party members must unite for the short term and the top leadership must be reshuffled to ensure that only those with integrity sit on the Supreme Council,” he told FMT.

As Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob continues leading Putrajaya, he said the Umno vice-president needed to hold open discussions with other parties, including Perikatan Nasional (PN), to ensure that his administration remains stable.

“Ismail must hang in there and refer to all PN component parties before making any big decision.

“He cannot make decisions on his own. He must always remember that Umno is not as dominant as before,” he said.

Law minister vows full implementation of automatic voter registration, Undi18 by Dec 30

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — The implementation of Undi18 and the automatic voter registration is expected to be put into practice latest by December 30, 2021 with some 5.6 million additional voters, de facto law minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said today.

Wan Junaidi said the Election Commission (EC) is currently in the midst of identifying several measures including amendments prior to the implementation such as amendments to the Election (Conduct of Elections) Regulations and putting together a cohesive standard operating procedures and infrastructure in place.

“However despite the persisting obstacles and shortcomings, the EC is committed to implementing them, latest by December 30, 2021 as ordered by the Kuching High Court,” he said during his ministerial reply in the Dewan Rakyat earlier today.

To a question from Pontian MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, Wan Junaidi also confirmed that there will be some 5.6 million additional voters comprising 4.4 million aged 21 and above; and another 1.2 million aged between 18 and 21 by December 30.

Racism within us must be exorcised for Keluarga Malaysia to succeed

Recently, my daughter placed an advertisement at Mudah.my for her house to be let. She got a call from a Malay man and the first question he asked was: “Do you rent your house out to Malays?”

Despite knowing that such episodes are pretty common, she was pretty upset and sad as a Malaysian. This happens in many instances when owners try to rent out their houses, with some blatantly saying they do not want tenants of a certain race.

We are all guilty of such practices. Many also refrain from renting out to foreigners from African countries. Well, it’s their property so it’s their fundamental right you might say.

As for job ads, most are guilty of looking for “their kind”, meaning someone from their own racial group. In the private sector, some firms owned by Chinese Malaysians specify that they want only those who are proficient in Mandarin.

Their argument is that they deal mainly with Chinese firms or those owned by Chinese Malaysians. So proficiency in the Chinese language is vital for their communication. While they may have a point, wouldn’t this be overcome if a common language like Bahasa Malaysia or English is used more often?

AirAsia senses strong recovery in the air
Posted by: superadmin - 09-24-2021, 09:33 AM - Forum: Business. Economy and Investment - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia expects a strong recovery for air travel in all key domestic destinations and for international flights to resume in the near future, complemented by stringent health and safety protocols that the airline has put in place.

In a statement today, AirAsia said that following the government’s announcement of the resumption of interstate travel and the reopening of tourism activities once the vaccination rate for adults reaches 90% in Malaysia, the budget carrier is geared up to fully restore its domestic and international services.

“This is further spurred by the success of the Langkawi travel bubble that commenced on Sept 16,” it said.

The airline has recorded overwhelming demand for leisure destinations that have reopened recently, including Langkawi (Malaysia), Boracay, Cebu and Bohol (the Philippines), and Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Hat Yai (Thailand).

“Load factors for these leisure destinations have been in the healthy range of 80-90% with more frequencies and routes to be added soon in line with consistently strong forward bookings.

Stoking up ideological confrontation between China, U.S. a fundamental misjudgment

Stoking up ideological confrontation between China, U.S. a fundamental misjudgment: Chinese ambassador

It is a fundamental misjudgment for some Americans to describe China-U.S. ties as "democracy versus authoritarianism," and stoke up ideological confrontation between the world's top two economies, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Qin Gang said Wednesday.

Qin made the remarks in his speech at a virtual conversation jointly held by The Carter Center and the George H. W. Bush Foundation for U.S.-China Relations.

"Thanks to generations of Chinese and American leaders and people, China-U.S. relations have made remarkable progress. However, today, some Americans' misunderstanding and misjudgment about China is building up," he said.

"A fundamental one is to define America's relations with China as democracy versus authoritarianism, and to stoke up ideological confrontation, which has led to serious difficulties in China-U.S. relations," he said.

Although the two countries are different in history, culture and political system, both peoples desire peace and prosperity, and leaders in Washington and Beijing share one common goal, just as former U.S.

President Jimmy Carter said, "to create peaceful and stable conditions for their people to pursue happiness," Qin said, adding this is "the biggest commonality" between the two countries.

"We never say that our system is the best, because we know only the suited is the best. Whether it is good or not should not be judged by what we say, but what we do," he said.
