Daulat Tuanku! King, Malay Rulers rise to the occasion
Posted by: superadmin - 06-17-2021, 09:44 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

In my June 15 column, I said suffering Malaysians were looking up to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, and the Malay Rulers for some sort of direction for the nation, if not an end to their troubles.

I said most Malaysians wanted Parliament to be allowed to reconvene as soon as possible and for an end to the Emergency which was imposed on Jan 12 and is scheduled to end on Aug 1.

Yesterday, the King and the Malay Rulers expressed their wish to see Parliament reconvened “as soon as possible”. They also said there was no need for the Emergency to be extended beyond Aug 1.

In an unprecedented move, the King called 18 leaders of political parties, the chairman of the Independent Special Committee on the Emergency and top government officials over the past week to find out the actual situation regarding the Covid-19 pandemic and the efforts of the government to control it.

Yesterday, he met with his fellow Malay Rulers to discuss the situation and to brief them on the views of those who had had an audience with him.

The meeting and their stand is historic.

Cases of a dangerous Covid-19 variant are 'rapidly increasing' in US, expert says
Posted by: superadmin - 06-16-2021, 09:36 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 210429143925-vaccination-0426-maine-medium-plus-169.jpg]

(CNN)As US states lift more coronavirus restrictions, experts are worried people who aren't fully vaccinated could contribute to further spread of the virus.

The Delta variant, first reported in India, currently accounts for nearly 10% of coronavirus cases in the US, according to the CDC.

With concerns it could become the dominant strain soon, medical experts are underscoring the importance of full vaccination.

"I'm worried about those who are unvaccinated," US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy told CNN Tuesday, noting the Delta variant "is rapidly increasing here in the United States."

The CDC has determined the Delta variant is a "variant of concern," a designation given to strains of the virus that scientists believe are more transmissible or can cause more severe disease.

The Delta variant "appears to be significantly more transmissible than even the Alpha variant or the UK variant, which is now dominant in the United States," Murthy told CNN.

"The second reason it's concerning is that there is some data to indicate that it may in fact also be more dangerous, may cause more severe illness. That still needs to be understood more clearly, but these are two important concerns and they explain in part ... why this is become the dominant variant in the U.K., where over 90% of cases are the Delta variant," Murthy said.

The real reason they’re against Penang reclamation project
Posted by: superadmin - 06-16-2021, 08:32 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

From Joshua Woo

[Image: PSR-penang-reclamation-project-three-island-030621.jpg]

Agriculture and food industries deputy minister Che Abdullah Mat Nawi came to Penang today and expressed his desire to cancel the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project.

He is the latest among federal politicians who are against the reclamation project. There are two things in common among them in relation to the PSR.

First, all of them cite environmental reasons in opposing the PSR. Second, all of them are silent about reclamation projects in states ruled by the Perikatan Nasional regime.

We hear nothing from these so-called environmentally conscious politicians when it comes to Langkawi’s RM40 billion reclamation project.

We hear nothing from these same politicians about Melaka’s reclamation project which is twice the size of PSR.

Environmental reasons, really?
Any observant person would know what these politicians are up to. They are playing politics with the PSR.

It’s not so much to champion the environment as to scandalise Penang’s development so that during the upcoming general election, it will appear that the state government has failed in its job.

China to send first astronauts to new space station on longest crewed mission to date
Posted by: superadmin - 06-16-2021, 06:15 PM - Forum: Astronomy - No Replies

[Image: 210616003306-05-china-space-station-astr...ge-169.jpg]

Hong Kong (CNN)A rocket carrying three veteran astronauts bound for China's orbiting space station module will launch from the Gobi Desert in the country's north in just over 24 hours, China's space agency announced Wednesday.

The three men, Nie Haisheng, 56, Liu Boming, 54, and Tang Hongbo, 45, will become the first Chinese astronauts to land on the initial stages of the space station, called Tiangong or Heavenly Palace, which is still under construction in a low Earth orbit.

China's Manned Space Engineering Office made the announcement at a news conference on Wednesday, saying the launch would take place at 9:22 a.m. Beijing time (9:22 p.m. ET) Thursday from Jiuquan Space Launch Center in the Gobi Desert.

The mission, called Shenzhou-12 or Divine Vessel, is the first of four planned Tiangong missions, according to state media, and marks a significant milestone in China's rapidly expanding space program. In the past seven months, the country's scientists have already successfully landed exploratory rovers on the moon in December and on Mars in May.

Rise in Kelantan cases, deaths may be due to Beta variant
Posted by: superadmin - 06-16-2021, 06:04 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

[Image: 3_SWAB_TEST_SHAH_ALAM_FRONTLINERS_COVID1...062021.jpg]

KOTA BHARU: The significant increase in the number of positive cases and deaths related to Covid-19 in Kelantan this year is believed to be due to the spread of the Beta, or South African variant in the community.

Kelantan health director Dr Zaini Hussin said this is following the test results of 23 samples taken from several clusters that had been sent for genome sequencing.

“We do not send all positive cases (for genome sequencing), but only take samples from several clusters in the state. It is possible that the majority of cases in Kelantan are of the Beta variant.

“It spreads so fast and in fact, the average number of deaths had also increased to between four and six cases a day, bringing the total fatalities to 175 this year compared with only seven last year. This variant may have been in the community in Kelantan,” he said.

Why wait 450 days to speak up, PKR man asks Hisham
Posted by: superadmin - 06-16-2021, 05:03 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: Shamsul-Iskandar-Mohd-Akin-and-Hishammuddin-Hussein.jpg]

PETALING JAYA: A former deputy minister has questioned Hishammuddin Hussein’s sincerity in his comments on the government’s management of the Covid-19 pandemic, noting that the foreign minister had not spoken out for more than a year.

Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin of PKR said Hishammuddin was partly to blame for any weaknesses in handling the health crisis as he was part of the Cabinet and should take collective responsibility.

“To speak out 450 days after the pandemic engulfed the nation demonstrates phoney concern and could also be part of a hidden agenda following rumours that he is a prime ministerial candidate,” the PKR information chief said in a statement.

Shamsul was responding to Hishammuddin, who earlier today stated that calls for reconvening Parliament should not be used as a tool to gain political power.

Why is our Parliament special, asks Malaysian Bar
Posted by: superadmin - 06-16-2021, 01:35 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Bar has urged the government to reconvene Parliament without any further delay.

Bar president AG Kalidas said there has been deep concern with the government’s continued failure to heed the repeated calls by various parties to reconvene Parliament.

“While we acknowledge the government’s need to focus on combating the Covid-19 pandemic, the work of governing Malaysia cannot be one-dimensional.

“We are of the view that public health and safety measures may be carried out in tandem with, and not at the expense of, the reconvening of Parliament,” he said in a statement.

Vaccinating all who registered by end-July key to recovery, says Lee
Posted by: superadmin - 06-16-2021, 01:32 PM - Forum: Covid-19 Pandemic - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: The key to ending the lockdown is to ensure that those who have registered for the vaccine receive it by the end of next month, says former deputy health minister Dr Lee Boon Chye.

He said this will enable the movement control order to be relaxed in August.

The number who have registered is 13.8 million, or 42% of the population, Lee said.

Commenting on the national recovery plan outlined by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday, the Gopeng MP and PKR health spokesman said not enough emphasis was placed on vaccinating the population as quickly as possible.

He called on the government to simplify the registration process by rolling out automatic registration for eligible citizens and administering vaccines on a walk-in basis.

“When the percentage of people given the vaccine increases, the number of new cases will decrease and the number of patients requiring treatment in the ICU will decrease,” he said in a statement today.
