PAS seriously considering cutting ties with Umno, says info chief
Posted by: superadmin - 02-02-2022, 12:53 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

KUALA LUMPUR – Amid a souring relationship between PAS and Umno, the Islamist party now appears to be considering cutting all ties with its Muafakat Nasional (MN) partner.

PAS information chief Khairil Nizam Khirudin said the betrayals by certain factions within Umno, including in causing the collapse of the previous Perikatan Nasional (PN) government and triggering a number of state elections, have led PAS to reconsider its cooperation.

The Dewan Negara senator warned that his party’s patience has limits, and that it would not hesitate to part ways if it is established that the marriage of convenience with Umno has affected Muslim unity.

“What is happening right now, with the betrayal of a certain number of Umno leaders towards PN, we are taking this into consideration,” he said during a dialogue session with Bersatu information chief Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan.

“If you are asking me when is the turning point for PAS, we will stick to our procedure. The matter is now under consideration. If there is strong support (to sever ties), we will call for an emergency assembly (Muktamar).

“We will then table this to the PAS Syura Council to turn it into a policy. At the moment, we call our members to be patient, because the action we are taking has to be strategized and not made too hastily.”

Perception of disunity can dent PH’s chances in Johor polls, says academic
Posted by: superadmin - 02-02-2022, 12:44 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: An academic has warned Pakatan Harapan (PH) that its chances of winning the Johor elections are adversely affected by the public perception that it is disunited.

James Chin of University of Tasmania said it was futile for PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim to play down talk of a disunited opposition following his party’s decision to use its own logo in the polls.

Speaking to FMT, he said some voters would be questioning PH’s ability to form a government since it could not even agree on the use of a common logo.

Anwar has been insisting that PKR’s decision has not affected ties among PH parties. He has also said that the strategy has been used before to no ill effect and accused unnamed parties of playing up the issue to divide the opposition.

Alphabet reports big fourth-quarter beat; stock pops
Posted by: superadmin - 02-02-2022, 10:52 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

  • Alphabet beat on the top and bottom lines for the fourth quarter.
  • The stock jumped in extended trading after the report.
  • The company also announced a 20-for-1 stock split.

Google parent Alphabet reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings and revenue. Shares popped more than 9% in extended trading.

The company also announced a 20-for-1 stock split that will go into effect in July.

Here are the key numbers:
  • Earnings per share (EPS): $30.69 vs $27.34 expected, according to Refinitiv
  • Revenue: $75.33 billion vs $72.17 billion expected, according to Refinitiv
  • YouTube advertising revenue: $8.63 billion vs. $8.87 billion expected, according to StreetAccount
  • Google Cloud revenue: $5.54 billion vs $5.47 billion expected, according to StreetAccount
  • Traffic acquisition costs (TAC): $13.43 billion vs. $12.84 billion expected, according to StreetAccount
Alphabet reported revenue growth of 32%, proving again that it was able to withstand the pressures from the pandemic and inflation.

The results follow a year of outperformance. The stock surged 65% last year, beating all other Big Tech companies and more than tripling gains in the S&P 500.

Google’s advertising revenue came in at $61.24 billion for the quarter, up 33% from $46.2 billion in the same period a year earlier.

Philipp Schindler, Google’s chief business officer, said retail was the largest contributor to year-over-year ad growth. Media and finance spending was also significant.

After a huge year for growth, the U.S. economy is about to slam into a wall
Posted by: superadmin - 02-02-2022, 10:45 AM - Forum: Business, Economy and Investment - No Replies

  • The U.S. economy last year grew at its fastest pace since 1984, but that momentum isn’t carrying into 2022.
  • An inventory build fueled most of the second-half growth that put annualized GDP up 5.7% for the year.
  • In the first quarter, the economy may not show any gain at all and possibly show a loss in GDP.
  • The pandemic, along with declining help from fiscal and monetary policy, will keep growth in check.
[Image: 106987750-1639146847609-gettyimages-1357...=740&h=416]

Spurred by a massive inventory rebuild and consumers flush with cash, the U.S. economy last year grew at its fastest pace since 1984.
Don’t expect a repeat performance in 2022.

In fact, the year is starting with little growth signs at all as the late-year spread of omicron coupled with the ebbing tailwind of fiscal stimulus has economists across Wall Street knocking down their forecasts for gross domestic product.

Combine that with a Federal Reserve that has pivoted from the easiest policy in its history to hawkish inflation-fighters, and the picture has suddenly changed substantially. The Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow gauge is currently tracking a first-quarter GDP gain of just 0.1%.

“The economy is decelerating and downshifting,” said Joseph LaVorgna, chief economist for the Americas at Natixis and former chief economist for the National Economic Council under then-President Donald Trump. “It’s not a recession, but it will be if the Fed tries to get too aggressive.”

GDP surged at an impressive 6.9% in the fourth quarter of 2021 to close out a year in which the measure of all goods and services produced in the U.S. increased 5.7% on an annualized basis. That came after a pandemic-induced 3.4% decline in 2020, a year that saw the steepest but shortest recession in U.S. history.

But the path ahead is less certain.

Syed Saddiq refutes bungalow claims, welcomes probe
Posted by: superadmin - 02-02-2022, 10:15 AM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

PETALING JAYA: Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has refuted claims by several quarters that he owns a bungalow worth millions of ringgit.

In a video posted on Facebook, the Muar MP said he had been renting the bungalow in question since his days as the youth and sports minister in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.

“With the Johor state elections nearing, I have been subjected to slander by many, and they are willing to produce expensive, studio-made videos to bring me down.

“What is most amusing is claims that I own a bungalow worth millions (of ringgit), with a swimming pool,” he said.

Syed Saddiq posted the video in response to a query from a Twitter user named Mario, who claimed the bungalow had a swimming pool and questioned the RM722,312 in assets declared by the MP in 2019.

Politicisation of education – Vasanthi Ramachandran
Posted by: superadmin - 02-01-2022, 08:32 PM - Forum: Educations - No Replies

[Image: 20210501-school-students-teachers-face_m...ernama.jpg]

FOR any prime ministerial aspirant, a good place to start will be by exercising political power via the education institution. This was a precedent set by Tun Abdul Razak, with others using education as a vehicle to expedite their journey to the prime minister’s office.

Our first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman endorsed the English language for higher learning to enable our students into the best universities in the world.

As the first education minister, Tun Abdul Razak replaced the colonial education system with the Razak Report which was later enshrined as the Education Ordinance 1957. With this. Bahasa Melayu became the national language.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s tenure as education minister and prime minister began with various “politically invested affirmative policies” being incorporated in our education. Today, in the 2021 rankings for 76 countries, conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Singapore ranks first. Malaysia ranks at a dismal 52nd.

If we peel the layers, therein lies the root of the present demerited education system with all of its “self-righteous” political prejudices and fallacies.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 1 — The Barisan Nasional (BN) machinery has been reminded not to take the upcoming Johor state election lightly.

PKR boasts nearly 80,000 membership applications, says sec-gen
Posted by: superadmin - 02-01-2022, 05:14 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

[Image: 20122020-KUL-_Secretary-General_PKH_-PH_..._NAFIS.jpg]

KUALA LUMPUR – PKR has acquired up to 78,093 new membership applications – a number the party interprets as a sign of the people’s support for the party’s leadership abilities.

In a statement today, PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the party had been receiving applications as early as November 4 and had just yesterday closed the window to register.

“Such a high number of applications shows that PKR has the people’s support and encouragement to continue to spur the nation’s politics and leadership,” he said.

The Kulim Bandar Baharu MP, who is also Pakatan Harapan secretary-general, added that the name list of registered members will be presented to the branch for checks and objections before it is then submitted to the component party’s member registration.

“The process above will take place from February 3 to 9.

“If there are objections to any of the newly registered members, the branch can bring up their reservations to the Secretary-General’s Office before or on February 9.

“All objections will be reviewed and decided on by the party’s Supreme Council, and the decision will be final,” Saifuddin said.

He added that the party’s main office will submit the final name list as early as February 18 to the Party Selection Committee for it to complete the voter list. – The Vibes, February 1, 2022

Kedah DAP unperturbed by rumours of Umno defections: chairman
Posted by: superadmin - 02-01-2022, 05:08 PM - Forum: Politics - No Replies

ALOR STAR – Kedah DAP remains unfazed by reports that two Umno backbenchers are planning to defect as it will not benefit them or anyone else here politically.

Kedah DAP chairman Tan Kok Yew instead urged the people here to focus on celebrating Chinese New Year while also not discounting the threat that Covid-19 continues to pose in the state.

Reports have surfaced that the two Umno members namely Sg Tiang assemblyman Datuk Suraya Yaacob and Bandar Baharu assemblyman Datuk Norsabrina Mohd Noor may join other parties, but many political observers here said that it was just an attempt to rattle PAS’ hold in the state, given that Umno is not in any position to inflict damage in the state.
Tan does not expect the two Umno representatives, who are state excos, would betray the PAS-led state government, here.

“I think it is a joke. There is no basis as it does not make any difference.”

“DAP accepts the status quo, and we will continue to play our role as an opposition in the state assembly.

“We will not resort to any move to unseat the state government. We have suffered in the last two years due to Covid-19 and the movement control orders.

“So, let’s enjoy the Chinese New Year and reduce politics for the time being.

“Let us refresh our energy so that in the future, Pakatan Harapan (PH) can take over the state in the next general elections,” he said.

Meanwhile, Norsabrina said that she has no plans to withdraw her support from the PAS-led state government.

She added that she also spoke to her counterpart Suraya, who also professes the same thing.

At present, PAS holds 15 seats in the 36-member Kedah assembly, while Bersatu has six and Umno two, giving Perikatan Nasional 23 seats.

They enjoy a simple majority of 13 after overthrowing the PH government in 2020, which was then led by Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, who is the son of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed.

PH, through PKR and Amanah, has five and four seats respectively, while DAP and Pejuang have two seats each.

Meanwhile, a veteran politician, who declined to be named, said that there is no reason for any defections to transpire although many quarters feel that there is room for improvement for Kedah under Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammed Sanusi Md Nor.

“Kedah has a long way to go to develop the state,” he said. – The Vibes, February 1, 2022

The 4 vitamin and supplements this immunologist takes every day

The 4 vitamin and supplements this immunologist takes every day to strengthen her immune system: ‘Your body will thank you’

[Image: 107008360-1643404618727-GettyImages-1218...=740&h=416]

In a perfect world, we’d all have access to a balanced, nutrient-dense diet that’s chock-full of healthy fats, fruits, vegetables, adequate protein and fiber — and theoretically, shouldn’t have to take additional vitamin supplements in order to strengthen our immune system.

However, not only do most of us fail to hit these daily nutrition goals, but we may have situations — like physical stress or inflammatory health issues — when we need more of certain nutrients than what we’re getting from food.

As an immunologist and functional medicine doctor, I always say that you cannot supplement yourself out of bad health or replace a poor diet with vitamins, but you can fill in the gaps to give yourself that extra leg up.
