Financial loss keeps Sri Muda’s darling doctor up at night, but public love keeps her going
SHAH ALAM – For Dr Shalini Devi Ramachandran whose Taman Sri Muda clinic was devastated following the recent tragic floods here, quitting was never an option.
What kept her motivated even more to continue serving her patients were the outpouring of love and support by the public since the disaster wreaked havoc in major parts of the country last December.
Speaking to The Vibes, Dr Shalini, who owns and runs the Aranda Clinic together with her husband Dr Yuveneswara Murti, shared her struggle in getting back up on her feet and her aspiration to keep Taman Sri Muda “shining”.
“The (painful) feeling of financial loss is still there, and it is indescribable. But more than that, I'm still feeling so much love from the general public,” she said.
Following the December floods that cost her an estimated loss of RM850,000, Dr Shalini and her husband had been operating a temporary medical camp in front of her clinic for close to a month, offering free service to victims.
In the middle of last month, the couple finally decided to reopen their clinic, although renovation works and the purchasing of medication, instruments and equipment are still ongoing due to high costs.

KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu has yet to issue any official communiqué regarding Plantation Industries and Commodity Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin’s position in the party.
Speaking to The Vibes in an exclusive interview on Wednesday, the Bersatu supreme council member said despite the ongoing rumours surrounding her position in the Umno splinter party, she will continue to go about her business as usual.
“There has been nothing official (coming) from the party. Loads of sources are saying otherwise, but nothing has been communicated to me, officially or unofficially.
“I am observing all the reports,” she said, adding that certain parties should stop playing up party politics when the country needs to continue its recovery.
When asked about her absence from the party’s recently held supreme council meetings, the Ampang MP cited her official engagements as a minister, which prevented her from attending the meetings.
“I recently came back from an official round-trip overseas, which included London, Dubai and Jeddah, on government business.
“It was unfortunate that I was unable to make it for the meeting,” she said, adding that she plans to do so when circumstances permit.

PETALING JAYA: A Bersatu leader has taunted Johor Umno leaders Puad Zarkashi, Nur Jazlan Mohamed and Mohamed Khaled Nordin to nominate party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as the prime minister candidate in the 15th general election (GE15).
This comes after the Umno leaders challenged Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin to remain as Perikatan Nasiional’s (PN) poster boy for the upcoming Johor state elections.
Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan said if they cannot name Zahid as the prime minister candidate for Umno, they must stop attacking his president.

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said the party will not join Muafakat Nasional (MN), the alliance established by Umno and PAS.
Bersatu agreed to join MN in August 2020, but their membership was not formalised following a worsening spat between Bersatu and Umno.
“I’ve already forgotten about MN. There’s no need to bring it up anymore,” he said in a statement.
“After all, Umno also decided during its general assembly (last year) not to work with Bersatu. So what is there to bring up?”
He added that Bersatu had already decided not to join MN.
“There are benefits to Bersatu not working with Umno. Bersatu won’t get caught up in the moral issues that plague Umno leaders.”
Muhyiddin was previously reported as saying that he believed the party’s participation in MN was part of a “grander coalition” that was needed to help the country “move forward”.

Dr M’s ‘shoo’ controversy - memory gaffe or selective memory? |

Dr Raman Letchumanan: I think the gaffe by Marina Mahathir was intentional, hoping no one would pick it up. You were successful in having that gaffe in your book, largely because many may not have bought the book and read it.
But when I read your column in the Sunday Star (yes, I do buy the print version of the weekend Star to see the other side of 'news' reporting), I immediately knew it was a grave mistake, more so blaming the gaffe on his late political rival.
Was it deliberate? Lies are not printable, period. Even so, it should have been immediately corrected. Your father didn't correct you?
So I see your apology as not sincere, but as someone caught lying through the teeth and trying to sound apologetic.
I admired your writings once, but now I see you and your father acting as good cop and bad cop. We have a long list of such noble people who seem virtuous but turn turtle at some point in time. Just look at our (Dewan Rakyat) speaker.
It also begs the question if blatant lies can be published and propagated as truth, what about opinions, views, advocacy, preaching, etc. I guess anyone with power, authority, rich or famous can publish whatever rubbish they want in any media.
By the way, I used to travel almost every fortnight to Asean countries in my official line of work. One could see the tremendous progress in leaps and bounds in these countries. We are now lower in terms of GDP compared to Vietnam. At this rate, soon, we are going to be the sick man of Asean.
At that point, it is Malaysians who will turn into 'boat people' seeking livelihood on the shores of Vietnam, Cambodia or Indonesia. But I trust our Asean neighbours would not 'shoot us on sight'.
Lord Black Adder: The irony is that the Vietnamese boat people left for greener pastures, and the new generations have done well in the countries that chose to adopt them as citizens.
Some have even returned to their country of origin, seeing it in much better shape now than the country whose shores they landed on to seek refuge.
Meanwhile, the coastal villages in Malaysia where the boat people first sought sanctuary are still living in abject poverty.

PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi today said an early general election will settle the issue of “threats” by Bersatu over its support for Umno and Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
He said elections would allow the prime minister more freedom to govern freely and dismiss “unreasonable requests” such as for the post of deputy prime minister.
Puad said that given the government’s weak majority in Parliament, there will be constant annoyances and threats from other parties.

More than $320 million stolen in latest apparent crypto hack |

- Wormhole, one of the most popular bridges linking the ethereum and solana blockchains, lost about $320 million in an apparent hack Wednesday afternoon.
- The two blockchains are popular in the world of DeFi, where programmable contracts can replace lawyers and bankers in some transactions, and NFTs.
- But few users stick with one blockchain exclusively, so bridges like Wormhole are a necessary go-between.
One of the most popular bridges linking the ethereum and solana blockchains lost more than $320 million Wednesday afternoon in an apparent hack.
It is DeFi’s second-biggest exploit ever, just after the $600 million Poly Network crypto heist, and it is the largest attack to date on solana, a rival to ethereum that is increasingly gaining traction in the non-fungible token (NFT) and decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystems.
Ethereum is the most used blockchain network, and it is a big player in the world of DeFi, in which programmable pieces of code known as smart contracts can replace middlemen like banks and lawyers in certain types of business transactions. A more recently introduced competitor, solana, is growing in popularity, because it is cheaper and faster to use than ethereum.
