True to form, our politicians and those with vested interests spew out nonsense about protests not being part of Malaysian culture. They say it’s a Western construct.
But historically, we got rid of the British through protests. Our New Economic Policy (NEP) was borne out of protests. And a few years ago, the protests organised by Bersih (The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections) led to a ground swell of change in our political landscape.
Younger Malaysians are especially vested in being vocal for their future.

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu reminded Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob last night that the support the party was providing him was conditional.
This clause would be highlighted at ceramahs in the run-up to the Johor elections, the party’s information chief, Wan Saiful Wan Jan, said.
Wan Saiful also reminded Ismail that it was Bersatu who nominated him for the prime minister’s post after Muhyiddin Yassin resigned.
“We need to remember that Ismail is the prime minister today not because of Umno. Umno never nominated him.
“They wanted Zahid (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi),” he said, referring to the Umno president. Ismail is an Umno vice-president.

It is very likely that a three-way contest will take place at the coming Johor state elections: a triangular fight is shaping up very nicely between Barisan Nasional, Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional.
It looks like a repeat of what happened in Melaka in November.
By the way, did anyone see if Muhyiddin Yassin did indeed “press the button”, as he said he would in his Melaka campaign, to trigger the Johor state elections?
If so, then it doesn’t make sense for him not to contest for re-election in Gambir. Or could it be that he was not in possession of the button after all?

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu leaders are said to be divided on whether to penalise Zuraida Kamaruddin after her alleged involvement with Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM).
A party insider said some leaders feel that it is not the right time to create enemies because Bersatu needs to focus on defeating Umno in the upcoming Johor polls, as well as in the next general election (GE15).

In three days, the world will witness the grand opening ceremony of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, marking Beijing as the world's first city to hold both the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics. Juan Antonio Samaranch, chairman of the IOC Coordination Commission for Beijing 2022, told the Global Times in an exclusive interview on Monday that the organizing committee has prepared everything extraordinarily. In full confidence, the Beijing 2022 Games, with the best venues and best winter athletes from around the world, will deliver extraordinary Games in the most difficult circumstances.
"We have seen with great satisfaction how the organizing committee has prepared everything extraordinarily. We are extremely confident. We are very happy with how things are going," Samaranch told the Global Times, noting that although the International Olympic Committee (IOC) never doubted the abilities of the organizing committee to deliver, COVID-19 made preparation for the Games a complex and complicated project.
Still, the organizing committee worked under the most difficult circumstances, and they have delivered the same quality that they promised at the beginning, the IOC official said, after spending a couple of weeks in China and visiting all the venues. "I'm amazed and impressed by the quality of what I've seen," he said.

Beijing 2022 torch relay kicks off with astronaut, celebrity athletes, Galwan Valley hero as torchbearers
Fourteen years after 2008, the Olympic flame took another historic run in Beijing, the only city in the world to host both Summer and Winter Olympic Games, amid the festive atmosphere of Chinese New Year.
In the torch relay on Wednesday, about 130 people, including sports legends, anti-COVID heroes, and space scientists, participated in the relay, ranging in age from 41 to 80.
The -4 C temperature didn't dampen the excitement, as the Olympic flame is often associated with a message of hope and is the most powerful symbol of the Olympic Movement. Vice-Premier Han Zheng, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and head of a leading group overseeing the Beijing 2022 preparations, lit a creatively designed cauldron in Beijing's Olympic Forest Park with the Olympic torch on Wednesday morning, marking the official start of the descaled three-day relay.
